1 out of 5 eggsIt was a bad memory...

Pros: It's relatively inexpensive compared to the others and still supports 32gb- in theory.

Cons: DIMM slots 3 and 4 will not work no matter what configuration I try. 1 stick in either slot or 1 in each. The only memory slots that work are 1 and 2. This has been a very frustrating experience.

Other Thoughts: I've been really pro-ASUS for several years now. Most of the gear they put out is pretty high quality. The Z97-A though, not so much. Given the instability of the Crosshair IV and Crosshair V AMD chipsets systems that I own, and now this, I think it's time to move on from Asus.

5 out of 5 eggsseamless upgrade

Pros: I upgraded from an Asus z87-a to Asus z97-a and it was very easy. I did not have to reinstall anything I simply switched everything and it worked flawlessly.
the z97 looks a lot better aesthetically and the software wise.
more fans supported.
more connections (m.2 and data express)
smoother playback/access to hard drives ( why I upgraded to begin with).

Cons: the heatsink on the top goes a little bit higher. no longer able to do a push pull config in my corsair 750d with my h105 anymore.
could have more data ports.

3 out of 5 eggsAm Anxious

Pros: Installed fine and everything SEEMED to be okay. After some hard drive/OS issues (not the MB's fault) I finally got my system booted and running.

Cons: After a good bootup, I checked NVIDIA Contol Panel to set the two ASUS video cards into SLI mode. Only saw one card installed. Moved the video cards around to make sure they were okay and when I installed the 2nd card into the only remaining PCIe slot (7) NVIDIA Contol Panel showed both cards but no SLI option. On referencing the ASUS Manual, it said that for SLI to use slots 2& 5. No joy! Slot 5 is totally unresponsive. Had to pull down the whole system and RMA it back to Newegg. That is in process. After many items purchased from Newegg, we'll see if their customer service matches their sales efforts. In the meantime, no PC (doing this review on the wife's rig).

Other Thoughts: After reading many of the reviews right here, needless to say I see many with the same or similar problem I have encountered and that makes me anxious about sticking with ASUS as I have all these many years. I know the Z97-A is not a high end board, but it seems something else is at work here, perhaps quality assurance. Rest assured that if the replacement board has issues, I will take my business elsewhere while sharing my experience with all who care.

1 out of 5 eggsNice motherboard, broke fast, terrible service

Pros: - Looks really nice.
- Isn't Alienware :)
- Easy to install
- UEFI bios is easy to use, and awesome
- Supports SLI
- Great SATA cable support with 6Gb/s
- Loads of USB slots
- Cables are easy to connect
- It "works"

Cons: - Back Shield is REALLY HARD to install
- Terrible Technical Support.
- Terrible latency. (Latency Spikes)
- Seems to cause lag spikes from latency issues
- Gives you nightmares.
- Feels slow.
- One of the PCI-express connectors on the board doesn't even work.

Other Thoughts: I have been having LOADS off issues with this motherboard. Sure it's a nice motherboard, and I am sure that people who have this board like it. But in my own experiences I believe that this motherboard sucks. I even get lag spikes in the Bios screen. That is sad.

5 out of 5 eggsZ97A

Pros: This thing is awesome, worked right out of the box on my kind of funky build using an xeon 1241v3 @ 3.5Ghz. I did a lot of research making sure this motherboard was compatible, but you never know. I booted it up and it recognized my cpu with no issues whatsoever. Picked up my ram as well no troubles. Booted off a usb flash drive, no problems. UEFI BIOS ARE THE BOMB! Everything is easy, wonder through for a while and you will feel right at home. You cannot beat this motherboard for the price! Seriously a great deal for a quality product.

I have had so many DOA motherboards I now choose nothing but ASUS.. Call me a fanboy or what have you but they have the best track record for me thus far, and I intend on supporting them fully.

Cons: Wouldn't mind more SATA connections
Different color scheme would be ideal, not many other components come in this black/gold scheme... Oh well.

Other Thoughts: If you about to make a new build and want a decent 1150 motherboard but don't want to break the bank, this is for you. It comes with most all the important features.

People pondering an xeon build, THIS IS THE MOBO FOR YOU! I am serious. Xeons only support one pci-e x16 graphics card, so you will never need a quad sli capable mobo or anything like that. This is the perfect solution to your searching. Just buy it.

1 out of 5 eggsExpected better

Pros: Everything works, but..

Cons: Everything went well for the first day - after that, the motherboard wasn't able to read my videocard at all on either of the three slots.

Other Thoughts: At first I thought it was EVGA's problem, but after getting sent back 2 new cards and still having the same issue, I found out it was the motherboard. I can't even send it back for a refund because the 30 days have now passed. Waste of money. Do not buy this.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality board.

Pros: This system board has lots of features, and is manufactured with solid quality, all at a respectable price.

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: While this motherboard is designed with overclocking in mind, I'm running my setup at stock speeds, paired with an Intel Core i7 4790K CPU, and this system is rock solid.

Also, I've had a RAM module flake out on me, soon after firing this system up, and this board will even help you in diagnosing the problem. It was some DDR3 RAM from an older home built system that I've stripped apart, but I'm planning to replace the memory soon, anyway.

3 out of 5 eggsMinor flaws

Pros: Price
Cool looking BIOS

Cons: PCIE3.0_2 slot runs only x8 instead of claimed x16, at least for the board I got. A defective ASUS GTX 770 I bought at the same time also runs significantly less stable on that slot. Although tests with an old EVGA GTX 650 seem to suggest it is all the 770's fault.

I am particular disappointed with the BIOS as it does not provide a quick way to select boot device (like popup a boot menu by pressing a hot-key). Whenever you plug in a bootable pendrive, you have to go all the way into BIOS and change the boot sequence. And if you have multiple hard drive, you will need to do that again after you remove the pendrive. For some people this might not be a big deal. But for me it is a significant lack of feature.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry to hear that the BIOS does not provide a needed feature for you. We do try to design the UEFI for the needs of many different users but unfortunately not all can be implemented so I do apologize. As for the PCIE3 slots, they are both indeed x16 but will run at x8 when in dual mode. If you would like to discuss this case further, please contact me through email and include your reference number within the subject line. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you. Cs#N141034628

5 out of 5 eggsI be happy

Pros: Was upgrading from a 775 board and opted for this MB after reading customer reviews and tech reviews. The board has put me into 2014 I think. Amazing BIOS features, four slots for DRAM, 3 PCIexpress slots, and loved the secure feel when the SATA cables locked into their slots.

Cons: Install DVD didn't load the drivers for two of the features but that is a minor nitpick on my part as I just found them on the DVD and loaded them up.

Other Thoughts: I only build every once in a blue moon and I must say that ASUS made this build easy and quick for me to get it past POST and into the OS. There was none of that "what the heck do those beeps mean" when hitting the power button. The darn thing lit up and ran.
