4 out of 5 eggsPlaying Nice

Pros: I bought this board instead of other similar priced boards because my last 2 builds were ASUS boards. This has all of the latest interfaces and runs the latest Haswell chips. The M-2 port is unique in this price range. The new GUI interface is a noticeable improvement. The instruction booklet was straightforward for the assembly portion, but a little hard to read for the BIOS portion. The most important part was that, when I turned it on the first time, everything was recognized and worked.

Cons: There are only 4 SATA ports. There is no ESATA port, but I was able to buy an ESATA plate and set the port to allow hot swap. This arrived at my door in a jiffy bag instead of a box. I was surprised that it survived the shipping gorillas.

Other Thoughts: This is replacing my 6 year old ASUS M3N78-EM / AMD 9600 build. The old motherboard has an on board ESATA port.
The new build is:
Intel Core i5-4690K
Kingston KHX1600C9D3P1K2/8G
SeaSonic SSR-360GP
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Everything is playing nice together.

5 out of 5 eggsAll I needed and then some.

Pros: This board is jam packed with all the basics. Four power phases to keep the power delivery stable. Three USB 2.0 headers, and one 3.0 USB header. M2 and the list goes on and on.

The board is plain and simple a high quality Asus built motherboard.

Cons: Wish it came with the case front panel Q-Connector because my eyes are old, and all the case front panel cable connectors are hard to see.

Other Thoughts: My board came with the latest bios already installed. Not going to overclock any time soon, so this board will do all I need it to do.

3 out of 5 eggsSolid and Reliable

Pros: Sold and Reliable as you would expect from Asus.
4 USB3 ports on the back.
4 memory Slots.
Intel RAID on motherboard.
2 - PS/2 Ports.
VGA / DVI / HDMI ports on motherboard.
Serial Port Header.
You can disable Animation in the UEFI BIOS.
Maybe the M.2 Interface on board is worth the lack of 2 SATA slots?

Cons: Only 2 USB2 ports on motherboard.
Only 4 SATA ports on motherboard.
Only 1 x16 PCI-Express Slot
No Parallel Port Header.
Yet another new UEFI BIOS.
No Intel RST application on Asus Website, had to go to Intel to find it.
I am comparing this board to the Asus H87M-Plus

5 out of 5 eggsExcelent!

Pros: Great mother board, works as expected.

Cons: None, provided its limitations are acceptable - only integrated graphics and only one PCI slot.

Other Thoughts: Would uby again.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperior quality

Pros: 1. M.2 support
2. 4 SATA 6 GBPS ports
3. S/PDIF out header with the ASUS bracket available elsewhere
4. TPM connector, module available elsewhere. Yes I'm using it and found the software, just type in TPM on their support site. Still have no idea how to configure it though.
5. 2 fan connectors 1 CPU fan connector. You can can just use a splitter I think, I tried but it didn't seem to work so I have 1 fan plugged in with each connector now.
6. Hyper Evo 212 fits on it correctly, I'm using a pull with a 140mm fan because my ram is high

Cons: 1. Could've used 2 more fan connectors
2. M.2 slot should be relocated elsewhere so heatsinks don't block it, probably the lowest right of the motherboard.
3. Need to include the ASUS quick connector for the front power, reset, etc.

Other Thoughts: A modern motherboard of the H97 variety. As good as it gets when not overclocking due to the 3 pcie x1 slots and 1 pcie x16 slot. So far no problems and boot up takes a few seconds at most. I learned my USB 3.0 Bluray burner causes it to hang at boot but this occurred using another motherboard as well so it's clearly not the fault of this one. I'd buy it if you don't plan on overclocking.

2 out of 5 eggsLong POST Delay on Boot

Pros: Mainly works once you boot up.

Cons: Takes over 2 minutes to get past the BIOS/UEFI POST during boot. Flashing the BIOS to the latest version didn't help.

Other Thoughts: I've replaced this board with an ASUS H97I-PLUS (same CPU/RAM/SSD) and now the boot up only takes a few seconds.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat A Difference!

Pros: This board is packed! Everything plugged in and started working on the first try. Easily accepted XMP profile once in the UEFI.

Cons: Not really a deal breaker because I'm not using it, but the M.2 slot will be blocked by a tower cooler. Install your SSD before you install your aftermarket cooler.

5 out of 5 eggssolid

Pros: A brand name I have come to trust. Has 3 PCI express that I wanted. Can use the newer M.2 SSD which plugs onto the motherboard and does not take up an SATA port. Installed and booted up on first boot. Burned in and load tested for 48 hours and no problems.

Cons: Still has the older PS/2 ports for the keyboard and mouse. I gave those up years ago. Also a VGA port that I find unless. Don't like spending money for old technology that not many would use.

Other Thoughts: I have been in the computer field for over 30 years and have built more computers then I can remember. I have always had very good luck with Asus mother boards and they are the ones I use in my own computers.

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints

Pros: Asus quality.

Cons: None so far. Will update if I find any.

Other Thoughts: Regarding the review above with the "scratching" of the gold, did you remove the plastic cover on that round Asus heatsink? I suspect that's what happened to that buyer. You can barely tell there's plastic on it, but there is. The plastic will scratch easily.

2 out of 5 eggsBad for Win7 on Raid

Pros: Asus quality, good for a corporate pc build.

Cons: Raid doesn't work with Win7

Other Thoughts: Board powered up fine; it is picky about memory, so you should use one of their tested Ram choices. But I can't install Win7 on a Raid1 hard disk configuration. I don't think that ASUS tested their RAID software properly; the install hangs and asks for a driver that does not exist. Win7 installs fine when Raid is disabled, however. Asked ASUS for support, and they have ignored me. Want RAID? Pick another Mobo. Otherwise, it is fine.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Mr. Ernie Banks,

RAID should work as long as you follow the directions in the user guide. If possible, please send me the exact steps tried in order to get RAID to work, and we can figure out a solution to this matter. 3730292.
