1 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

Pros: If the board is functioning it is a nice performer.

Cons: I have had this board for 8 months, and it has died twice. The first time I RMA'ed it and while prepping the shipment I damaged the CPU pins, and had to pay for repairs... nothings perfect, it died but I damaged it on the way in.. no harm no foul there.

Two months later I rebooted my machine and it won't post. Through trouble shooting I deduce that memory channel "A" is bad and sent the board in for another RMA.. two weeks later same broken board is returned to me with the same problem. When I called tech support I was told they certified it working and since I didn't listen for beep codes it was a waste of my money to ship it.

To date I have replace or removed all parts except for the motherboard and it has the same issue, but their RMA department just wasted my time and money by shipping it back and forth.

Other Thoughts: I've used asus MBs since the 90s when I got a 440bx board and have loved them enough to support them through other devices such as phones, network gear, tablets and video cards. But treating me like an idiot and proving awful customer service means I can't support them anymore.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We want to thank you for making an effort posting this review and I understand that you have issue with the motherboard. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this issue have caused you. I understand how frustrating it is since you have RMA'd it alreadyand the motherboard came back the same. If you can gave us another chance, I can help you with this issue. I can create a new RMA for the unit and I will note that the first repair is unsuccessful since the unit came back with the same issue. If you want to discuss this matter further please don't hesitate to email at

1 out of 5 eggsASUS "USE" to be a good brand

Pros: Looks Good
Supports everything I need
Can do 3 Way SLI (I don't use nor need this but it's a nice feature to have.)
Contains 2 fans, one intake and the other exhaust for under the "Armor" portion.
Lots of USB ports

Cons: Expensive
Hard to get to some connections because of the "Armor" bulking out
Unusable after a little more than a month.

I put together my new PC on January 1st, 2015. A little over a month later, I come home and turn my PC on for a little gaming session, about 30 minutes later, my computer all of a sudden shuts off (no power) in the middle of a game. I power it back on and then it shuts off again after 3 seconds, not even enough time to get to the boot screen. This was particularly upsetting because abruptly shutting off like that could easily have damaged other components or corrupted the data on my HD.

My first thought was the PSU, which I then RMA'd and bought a new one while I waited which had more Watts and more efficient. This didn't work, I changed the RAM, GPU, CPU Cooler, Cleaned the CPU and nothing worked. I then reset the BIOS via removing and re-attaching CMOS Battery, which kept it powered on for an extra 2 seconds.

I then unplugged everything except the RAM, CPU and CPU Cooler, which it powered off after 5 seconds. That's when I figured out that the motherboard had failed. I attempted to contact ASUS via their email services. Don’t get me started on what an absolute nightmare ASUS’ support path is.

First, the site required me to enter a bunch of information about my system. I did that and gleefully pressed send and I was promptly greeted with a message telling me that I couldn't leave a value empty, which I didn't. Triple, Quadruple checked. Even tried different browsers and it still didn't work.

After all of that, I decided to do a live chat with a guy who, I’m fairly certain was closely related R2D2 (the robot trash can from Star Wars). I told him my situation and he kept saying "I apologize". I’m not looking for an apology. I’m seeking a resolution and for you to honor the warranty you provided me when I purchased your product.

Eventually we got to the point where he decided to help me with an RMA. R2D3 kept dodging my questions with other questions. He refused to answer anything regarding how long the process takes. It’s very upsetting that I’ve been without a PC for going on 2.5 weeks now, and I would just like to know when I can expect to get my PC working again. Eventually I just told him to get the RMA process going and I'll go buy another motherboard in the meantime. Completely Unacceptable Service.

Always had Asus Motherboards. This is my last one. In fact, this is the absolute last time I buy anything ASUS because it has become painfully obvious that satisfying their customers is WAYYY down on their priority list.

5 out of 5 eggsSick!

Pros: With metal back plate and the thermal armour this thing is a beast. Very strong construction.

Great attention to things such as USB3.0 port and SATA ports being at a right angle so there is no stress on the MoBo from the cable and makes your build look that much cleaner.

The 2 included MoBo fans are pretty awesome as well as all the plugs to fill in any unused ports, pci/e slots, or dimms

Cons: Some of the screw holes in the thermal armour are long no eggs subtracted though just suggest using a magnetic or good fitting screw driver shouldn't be to big of an issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Motherboard, Bad software

Pros: Great aesthetics, Useful thermal sensors, and overclocks like a champ.

Coming from an AMD system, I don't have much contrast between other Intel boards but I chose this one for it's great warranty and I plan on using it (hopefully I don't have to) when the time comes.

It has great features like it's 2 built in "dust de-fans" and provided slot covers for unused pci-e and ram slots.

Cons: The 4/5 eggs is due to it's horrible Thermal Radar 2 program. You can download AI Suite 3 but for the love of good do not hit the thermal tuning button on the Thermal radar section of the Suite. The only thing I'd use this section for is to adjust the fan speeds of the 2 assist fans (the 2 tiny ones mounted near the vcore and the pci-e slots) because they do get pretty loud.

If you do decide to run the thermal tuning option it will by-pass whatever fan curve you've set in the bios and it's a pain to get that back. You'll have to actually go on the ASUS forums and download an uninstall program, even after that you have to maunally delete some registries to completely remove the thermal radar program.

So what if you want the fan curves provided in Thermal Radar 2? Whatever settings you apply here will simply disappear if you decide to set a custom profile. You can set a certain fan to speed up if a certain section of the board is getting hot, but whatever sections of the board you set for the program to monitor they'll simply vanish and you have to manually set them each time you load up that profile.

5 out of 5 eggstotally radical

Pros: Looks awesome, came with candy, easy to install. Either I'm to stupid or its a flaw (not docking any eggs if I'm this stupid) but I could only find one 4 pin slot for any fans that came with the case I got. The bios is so very easy to work with you'd be amazed.

Cons: I'm stupid

Pros: Honestly, I bought this for its looks but it still does what it says on the box! The software that comes with it is also good to use for monitoring and tweaking. But seriously, this board is gorgeous!

Cons: None so far

5 out of 5 eggsGreat MB

Pros: Fast to setup. Easy to use. It has a 5 year warranty.

Cons: It's difficult to install due to all the excess armor, etc. If you're experienced and you have the right tools it won't matter. Not docking an egg because it's not hard to figure out lol.

Other Thoughts: I'm not overclocker and was looking for high performance and reliability. I believe I've found what I was looking for.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 Problems

Pros: The board is straightforward to install. It has more than enough connectors for most people. The BIOS has a fussy interface, but provides a good selection of options.

Cons: This motherboard has two USB 3.0 controllers: one is by Intel and manages the USB 3.0 connectors in the rear I/O panel, and the other is by ASMedia and manages a USB 3.0 connector near the PCI slots. We have installed the latest drivers from ASUS' website for both controllers.

We have an AFT XM-37U 3.5" card reader (N82E16820176024) connected to the internal ASMedia USB 3.0 connector. This card reader includes a USB 3.0 port. The card reader and USB port have worked flawlessly.

Unfortunately, the USB ports in the rear I/O panel are a serious enough problem that we wish we had purchased a different motherboard. USB 3.0 devices plugged into the rear USB 3.0 ports either do not get recognized or are recognized only after a delay. Once recognized they often perform poorly, and can produce BSODs when unplugged. We have spent over 2 hours on hold with ASUS waiting for a tech to help sort out this issue. No answer so far.

Other Thoughts: This motherboard was used in a new build with new components. Really wanted it to work, but we will probably have to get an RMA.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard's USB ports. Have you already updated the BIOS to the latest version? It may help with an increase in stability and compatability for newer devices. In addition, I would also advise viewing the QVL to which I have posted a link below for your convenience. It should help as a reference for tested working devices.

http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_Z97_MARK_1/HelpDesk_QVL/

If you still would like to RMA, please refer to the link below. Simply fill out all pertinent info so that we can process your RMA and send you the instructions to have the unit sent in for repair service. Optionally you can contact ASUS support (live chat or phone in) to have them create a case and RMA as well if you have any issues with the form. If you would like to discuss this case further, please contact me through email and include your reference number within the subject line. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you. Cs#N150272294
