Maximus VII Hero: Your 2014 ROG Upgrade!

Last year's Hero smashed onto the PC gamer and enthusiast builder scene – easily the most popular ROG board to date! It goes without saying then that 2014's Maximus VII Hero would have a lot to live up to. So, thankfully, it's had a huge upgrade and a big splash of cool design. Have a look at this:

ASUS Motherboard

The sharp aesthetic design is drawn throughout its creation; from painted, matte black PCB to the heatsink, to the (optionally) illuminated Z97 heatsink. The keen-eyed will also notice no more white clips as the whole board is now totally red and black!

ASUS Motherboard

The Hero supports all current Intel 4th Generation (Haswell, Haswell-refresh) and future 5th Generation (Broadwell) CPUs on LGA1150. The Extreme Engine DIGI+ III hardware includes 8 + 2-phase power, NexFET™ Power Block MOSFET, 60A Ferrite Chokes, and 10K Black Metallic Capacitors to make overclocking a cinch.

On the memory front there's support for four DDR3 DIMMS up to and beyond 3,200MHz, depending on what kit you choose to pair it with.

ASUS Motherboard

Within its price-range it's also the only board with rear bracing/heatspreaders for the VRMs, too!

ASUS Motherboard

While top-side, the heatsink has a nickel-plated heatpipe cunningly tucked deep into its design to improve cooling.

ASUS Motherboard
ASUS Motherboard

The rear IO features two USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, combination PS2 keyboard and mouse, HDMI out, DVI out, dsub out, USB BIOS Flashback, RJ45 Intel I218V Gigabit Ethernet port with LANGuard (and GameFirst III), S/PDIF out and 6x 3.5mm audio jacks from the SupremeFX 2014.

ASUS Motherboard

In the box there's also a metallic black Q-shield to cover the rear IO.

ASUS Motherboard

The audio front packs SupremeFX 2014. This includes ROG technologies like SupremeFX Shielding over the sound codec, ELNA premium audio capacitors, ELNA premium audio capacitors, DTS Connect, and ROG exclusive enhancements such as Sonic SoundStage, Sonic SenseAmp, Sonic Studio and Sonic Radar II.

ASUS Motherboard

The SupremeFX Shield gets a flash of ROG Redline, too.

The PCI-Express layout is aimed at (most commonly) two-way SLI and CrossFire users with its two, red PCI-Express x16 slots providing 1 x 16 or 2 x 8 from the CPU. If you're using more GPUs, wait for our Computex announcements!

Three open-ended PCI-Express x1 slots, a PCI-Express x16 (x4 electrically) and the M.2 (PCI-E x2) slot are all connected to the Z97 PCH. Note that due to the limitation in number of available Z97 PCI-Express lanes, these PCI-Express lanes are shared. The default setting is Auto Mode, which automatically assigns the PCI-Express lanes, meaning if you install a PCI-Express x4 device into the bottom slot, the system will automatically detect and disable the x1 slots and M.2 slot.

ASUS Motherboard

The red heatsink stripe is extended further along the motherboard PCB.

The M.2 port support PCI-Express x2 devices up to 2280 (80mm long), giving the latest 10Gbps extreme performance. Since it's PCI-Express based it does not eat up one of the eight SATA III ports when used, giving you the maximum storage potential and best performance, all the time.

ASUS Motherboard

Onboard buttons include the usual power, rest, Clear CMOS, MemOK! tester and new Sonic SoundStage switcher and KeyBot on/off.

ASUS Motherboard

Flip the board over, and you can find the KeyBot hardware IC, too.

ASUS Motherboard

On the bundled software disc you'll get these to use with your new build:

  • ROG GameFirst III
  • ROG RAMDisk
  • ROG CPU-Z
  • ROG Mem TweakIt
  • Kaspersky® Anti-Virus
  • DAEMON Tools Pro Standard
  • ASUS WebStorage
  • Home Cloud
  • ASUS Utilities

5 out of 5 eggsAsus vii hero

Pros: Came with latest bios. I ran my i7 4790k at 4.6ghz without any problems. Has a really good and easy to navigate bios. On board sound is superb. Has debug codes to diagnose different kinds of errors. Great price at $220. So far everything has been working. I really love the red leds on mobo.

Cons: none!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board, but RAID issues.

Pros: Solid board, the BIOS is very well organized and nearly everything is customizable. The 'ROG' and red portions light up (but can be turned off in BIOS).

The POST code display is great, makes it much easier to diagnose issues.

Very good overclocking options, ranging from low-tech grouped settings to detailed adjustments for more technical overclockers.

Cons: Installing RAID 1 with Windows 7 took a lot of work. I eventually had to download a driver from Intel's site, the one that comes on the support disk didn't work. Also, the newest driver on Intel's site didn't work. I believe the Intel RST was initally disabled on the BIOS, and it has to be enabled. It's possible I disabled it and forgot, but I don't think so.

Other Thoughts: Overall a very solid board for the price, and if you don't want to install RAID (or are installing a newer OS than win7) you shouldn't have any issues.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Board

Pros: This board is aesthetically appealing, and functional--which is why I chose it. The board posted without any problems, and continues to boot my pc without delay.

Cons: The reason I'm giving this product 4 stars is because it arrived unsealed. Despite that fact though, no accessories were missing, and the product looked unharmed--ie, no bent pins, fingerprints, etc.

1 out of 5 eggsThey take FOREVER to Refund!

Pros: Asus has always been a good brand, and I like there quality.

Cons: First thing first, this motherboard I received was suppose to be NEW, but the one I received looked like an open box, or refurbished since it had a few scratches and the box was partially open that was inside the shipping box.

Other Thoughts: I sent it back to Newegg RMA almost 2 weeks ago, and its been over a week since they tested it and approved the refund. I was suppose to receive a refund last week about 5 days ago and I haven't gotten it yet. They told me that there was a problem in the refund process and it would take a few more day. By this time the sale on another motherboard ended and they don't even care about this that I need to pay the original price now. Bad customer satisfaction.

3 out of 5 eggsGood board if it works

Pros: Its a good board if it work first one DOA, tech support not helpful at all. Great service from Newegg replace the board without a fuss 2 eggs for the board 1 egg for newegg great service.

Cons: Board won't power up with cpu power plug in,Tech support is absolutely waste of time, first thing they said is damage cup socket from installation or damage cpu. Good thing is Newegg take good care of their customer.

Other Thoughts: Asus is always hit or miss, always have the reputation on poor QC and tech support. Want to try their board for a long time, finally decide to give it a try for my kid new build, turn I am one of the unlucky one. Next time for a new MB Asus will not be one of them.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I do apologize that you experienced issues with your motherboard but I am glad Newegg was able to assit you. When you stated that the first thing tech support said was "CPU damage", were they asking about if there was damage to the socket or CPU or are you saying they told you there was damage? It does not seem likely that it would be the first thing as there are many other factors that can contribute to a board not powering on such as the PSU. Perhaps it was a miscommunication due to a language issue. If you would like to discuss this case further, please contact me through email and include your reference number within the subject line. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you. Cs#N150260972

1 out of 5 eggsBuy a new one but I received a openbox item

Pros: not installed yet

Cons: I just get it today. I bought it as new, but I was open box. There are many scuff marks on motherboard's heatsink. I contacted and returned it right away without hesitating. I do not like, so i returned it for refund, and I was going to reorder another one, but it was out of stock. I went for evga z97, hope this one will be good.

5 out of 5 eggsEggscellent Board

Pros: Fast setup, SOLID build, extremely fast, cosmetically gorgeous, extensive BIOS menu; tweaks galore.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Been using it for 6 months now, and it is a very solid board. I have no complaints. Make sure you get the RAM listed on the spec sheet. I had this thing up and running in minutes including a win8 install of a USB drive. MINUTES.
