2 out of 5 eggsHard to overlook the bad sound quality

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I bought this board over black Friday 2014. It's solid, has a ton of options, it's easy to configure just about anything, and if not for the audio problems it would be an absolutely fantastic board.

Cons: I'm no audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. I don't play with headsets, but I do have a solid Klipsch 4.1 Pro Media system that up until this board has always sounded fantastic. My last board was a GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD4P (i5-750) and the sound quality was never in question. It was something I just never noticed because overall it sounded 'good enough'. Before the UD4P board I had run a separate SoundBlaster card because that's just what you did back then.

When I upgraded to the Asus Maximus VII Hero I had read some of the reviews that mentioned the sound issues, and most of them used headphones and they sounded like audio nerds who hear things that my ears just aren't tuned to, however after running this board for 6 months now I've finally broken down and purchased a SoundBlaster Z card because the Hero just doesn't deliver.

I'm not talking about symphony music or anything special, hell half my MP3s are 128k, but this board just fails to deliver good sound. With my SoundBlaster Z I'm not having to crank my stereo volume past the halfway mark, which is something I've never had to do before, and the Maximus VII Hero seems finicky about running my two surround speakers, to the point where they're only operating at about 25% of their previous volume.

So the SoundBlaster Z card arrived and everything is back to sounding awesome again. Audio just isn't a question any more, but it's sad that I had to augment my brand new state of the art "gaming" motherboard with a secondary $75 sound card (got it on sale).

I just wouldn't recommend this motherboard if you intend to hook it up to anything that produces sound. Again, i'm no audio snob, just a regular guy who's sad that Asus is unable, in this day and age, to deliver acceptable sound. There's threads full of people over on the Asus forum who are waiting patiently for some sort of magical driver fix that in 6 months has never come. I'm not sure any driver will ever fix the issue because I think it's a hardware problem.

Speaking of problems the M.2 listing for this board should simply be removed from the spec listings. It serves no purpose other than a marketing ploy to get people to buy this board.

Other Thoughts: -Remarkably terrible sound quality, like this board was made back in 2002
-M.2 SSD slot is a joke
-"Gaming" motherboards should assume gamers want to listen to reasonable audio

I'm not interested in hearing some customer service excuse/reply here. Perhaps you should instead be over on your own forum answering the droves of questions about the audio for this board rather than shoring up the image for this bad board here.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: does everything I throw at it. it performs nice, looks dapper and it fits my build. had some trouble getting the liquid cooler installed but that isn't anything to degrade mobo

Cons: no option to change pattern of red glow... but that's just personal preference

5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Spent quite a bit of time agonizing over the decision for a Z97 motherboard at this price point. This system has been rock-solid, performs well, and has been very easy to configure for general use as well as overclocking. This is the first build I've ever done where I relied on on-board audio, and the output from this board is very good. I can hear no noise with the amplification all the way up.

Cons: While the audio has good fidelity, the total volume is somewhat less than what I could get previously with a separate card.

5 out of 5 eggsIt Glows Red

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Smooth install. Comes with everything you need and then some. Simple to follow, well laid out, well designed, pleasing to look at, everything is labelled down to the power pins for the case. Bios was unbelievable. Never had mouse support in a bios before.

Cons: Unsure that there were any cons.

Other Thoughts: Trace along the back glows red, so if you buy a blue or green case keep in mind you'll see the red too. Mine is blue and red, I don't mind it a bit.

3 out of 5 eggsI like It but....

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Its a very nice looking motherboard. Its very visually appealing to me. Seems to be a solid motherboard if it lasts...

Cons: I first received the motherboard and I noticed it had a few markings on one of the heatsinks. I purchased this item brand new or so I thought, the box itself wasnt sealed with tape or anything. About a 3 week or month into using it it stops feeding video. So the cons are it killed display after about a month of use maybe badluck or what. Markings on a "brand new" item. I recently received my RMA on the 5-6-2015 Again there are markings on the heatsink. Common problem or again badluck.

Other Thoughts: This is my second go around with this motherboard. Its a nice looking item and it gets the job done. Hopefully it lasts longer than the previous one I owned.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Greg M.

Thank you for choosing ASUS products. We value your feedback and apologize for this inconvenience you had with this motherboard. ASUS Customer Loyalty department here to assist and is dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products. Please note all ASUS products are thoroughly tested and inspected for quality assurance before distribution. I suspect somewhere after distribution the box was opened and motherboard was mishandled leaving the markings on the heat sinks.

In regards to your recent RMA, Has the video out issue been resolved since receiving back? The motherboard would have most likely been repaired instead of replaced in which you will have the same markings to the heat sinks. If have any question or concerns, please feel free to contact me direct at cl-frank@asus.com case # N150520076 in the subject line. Please also provide your recent RMA # in your response and I can follow up to see if MB was repaired or replaced.

Sincerely,
Frank

5 out of 5 eggsAttractive motherboard

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Easy overclocking features!
Easy to understand the BIOS!
A lot of features!
Easy to get a stable overclock!
LEDs

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was worried after reading others complaining of DOA motherboards. The first motherboard I purchased was Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1, and it came defective. I RMAed for refund. Therefore, when I was making decision to purchase this motherboard, I got even more worried.

In the end, I still decided to purchase this motherboard, as I've always purchase products from Asus because I am always satisfied with the products I purchased from Asus. Worrying was completely pointless when I received this motherboard.

Great customer service from Newegg, they quickly shipped this board to me after I RMAed the first defective board.

5 out of 5 eggsGood MOBO, but did not arrive in mint quality

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: -Mobo works with advertised features fine.
-BIOS is easy to use to somebody who does not overclock often, and was able to switch booting options easily. Also works with mouse.
-Looks cool! Has a nice red glow to it.

Cons: -The hard red plastic bit with the Maximus logo on it has a visible scratch made from some fine-pointed object like a screwdriver or a knife tip. Not negative to the board persay, but might be a manufactory issue.

Other Thoughts: Fits fine in a Fractal R4 Mid-tower sized case. Could use a few more USB slots but I knew what I was buying on the store page - I think it had a few extra board plugs for up to 2x3.0USB and 2x2.0 USB in addition to the 6 on the read I/O plate.

5 out of 5 eggsROG, my new hearth-throb

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: The features are truly a good fit for gamers. All software is GREAT! No "bloatware" IMHO. True 1-click system configuration, monitoring, and performance tuning IF you have all modern, high-quality and performance hardware. Works great with Win8.1.

Cons: None I can see

Other Thoughts: My simulated-sine-wave UPS fried my Asus P8Z68 Deluxe and 2xMSI G45's. I switched to this Maximus VII Hero and LOVE it! With a 4790k, AIO H100i Cooler, and 2133Mhz RAM, this system screams, just smoothly w/o the noise :) All the software tools make overclocking FUN! I did a 1-click performance tuning and it bumped up my CPU to a stable and cool 4.6Ghz CPU and 2200Mhz RAM. Make sure you hook as many fans up to the MB as possible so you can use the custom FAN Expert 3 utility :) But if you run Win8.1 and have a good HASWELL CPU you should be very happy as a gamer (the 2 I tested worked perfect)

4 out of 5 eggsLooks and works fantastically well, but a pain to get through POST

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Hot looking MB with loads of goodies, after a rough start it works like a charm.

Cons: Before you start, download the latest BIOS version from Asus, put it on a USB flash drive, rename the file M7H.CAP, and flash the BIOS with the Crashfree utility, otherwise it will not get through POST. Also, the DIMM sockets are difficult to get the chips seated into; if the board is giving you QCode 'FE', reseat the RAM. Asus' support site is pretty lame, too; I found those solutions from a third-party tech site because Asus either didn't think the file name for the BIOS was important, or it just outright collapsed. Bad BIOS, cheap DIMMS, no support = -1 Eggs.
