5 out of 5 eggsAttractive motherboard

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Easy overclocking features!
Easy to understand the BIOS!
A lot of features!
Easy to get a stable overclock!
LEDs

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was worried after reading others complaining of DOA motherboards. The first motherboard I purchased was Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1, and it came defective. I RMAed for refund. Therefore, when I was making decision to purchase this motherboard, I got even more worried.

In the end, I still decided to purchase this motherboard, as I've always purchase products from Asus because I am always satisfied with the products I purchased from Asus. Worrying was completely pointless when I received this motherboard.

Great customer service from Newegg, they quickly shipped this board to me after I RMAed the first defective board.

5 out of 5 eggsGood MOBO, but did not arrive in mint quality

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: -Mobo works with advertised features fine.
-BIOS is easy to use to somebody who does not overclock often, and was able to switch booting options easily. Also works with mouse.
-Looks cool! Has a nice red glow to it.

Cons: -The hard red plastic bit with the Maximus logo on it has a visible scratch made from some fine-pointed object like a screwdriver or a knife tip. Not negative to the board persay, but might be a manufactory issue.

Other Thoughts: Fits fine in a Fractal R4 Mid-tower sized case. Could use a few more USB slots but I knew what I was buying on the store page - I think it had a few extra board plugs for up to 2x3.0USB and 2x2.0 USB in addition to the 6 on the read I/O plate.

5 out of 5 eggsROG, my new hearth-throb

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: The features are truly a good fit for gamers. All software is GREAT! No "bloatware" IMHO. True 1-click system configuration, monitoring, and performance tuning IF you have all modern, high-quality and performance hardware. Works great with Win8.1.

Cons: None I can see

Other Thoughts: My simulated-sine-wave UPS fried my Asus P8Z68 Deluxe and 2xMSI G45's. I switched to this Maximus VII Hero and LOVE it! With a 4790k, AIO H100i Cooler, and 2133Mhz RAM, this system screams, just smoothly w/o the noise :) All the software tools make overclocking FUN! I did a 1-click performance tuning and it bumped up my CPU to a stable and cool 4.6Ghz CPU and 2200Mhz RAM. Make sure you hook as many fans up to the MB as possible so you can use the custom FAN Expert 3 utility :) But if you run Win8.1 and have a good HASWELL CPU you should be very happy as a gamer (the 2 I tested worked perfect)

4 out of 5 eggsLooks and works fantastically well, but a pain to get through POST

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Hot looking MB with loads of goodies, after a rough start it works like a charm.

Cons: Before you start, download the latest BIOS version from Asus, put it on a USB flash drive, rename the file M7H.CAP, and flash the BIOS with the Crashfree utility, otherwise it will not get through POST. Also, the DIMM sockets are difficult to get the chips seated into; if the board is giving you QCode 'FE', reseat the RAM. Asus' support site is pretty lame, too; I found those solutions from a third-party tech site because Asus either didn't think the file name for the BIOS was important, or it just outright collapsed. Bad BIOS, cheap DIMMS, no support = -1 Eggs.

2 out of 5 eggsCould be so much better!

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Great layout, easy to install, good for overclocking

Cons: Sound system really sucks, most of the software does not work with Win 7/64, manual difficult to understand and not much in the way of explanation for a lot of items

Other Thoughts: Really thought this was going to be a great board, but the sound system sucks and using the supplied software doesn't help, but makes it worse. Can't use a 5.1 analog on back and analog speakers on the front. Lot's of feedback to the microphone due to having to up the boost so people could hear me. Very hard to set up sound without their software, too.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Charles F.

I certainly understand your concern in regards to the motherboard's sound system. I would like to apologize for any inconvenience this has placed you. I want to personally assist you with this matter. Does it give you a crackling sound or a distorted sound? Since you already tried updating software drivers and still doesn't work, I suggest you to try updating the BIOS of the motherboard. Also, you may try installing a different Operating System to isolate the issue. Kindly let me know the result after trying this troubleshooting, you can email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150507589 in the subject line for a reference.

Manuel

5 out of 5 eggsgreat motherboard

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Upgraded from the ancient Asus ROG Blitz Extreme with q6600 @ 4 GHZ. My maximus hero is running a 4790k 4.6 GHZ with 1.195v bios, 1.21v cpuz. Also using a h100i cooler with a push/pull fan setup in a corsair graphite 760t. Oh my is it fast! and stable! could not be any happier. I really like how the board lights up. looks great in the 760t case.

Cons: Have not had any REAL issues with motherboard. Took me a couple hours to figure out why the ethernet port would not work. But, a little patience and a few updates and its working like a champ!

1 out of 5 eggsDead after only a month. Boot loop with no RMA from ASUS

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Worked fine when it actually worked...for a month.

Cons: To my disappointment this board only lasted a month if that, not to mention the time I had with the ASUS RMA process. Well the only thing good I can say about this board is that it worked fine....for the month I actually got to use it. After that month when I went to turn on my computer it suddenly kept going into a boot loop before the BIOS screen would even come up. Constantly boot looping over and over again. I performed all the standard tests (remove RAM, check different RAM slots, upgrade the BIOS, perform out of box testing etc...) and after finding other reports on the Internet about the same boot loop problem with this board I issued an RMA with ASUS. This is where my horrible experience began.

I took documenting photos of how my motherboard looked before I shipped it off as well as a documenting video showing the boot loop problem which was occurring for proof of the condition my board was in before shipment. After a couple of weeks with the ASUS RMA department, no notifications or anything coming from them, I suddenly get my board back in the mail with the ROG heat sink torn off and laying in separate wrapping inside the box. This was accompanied with an letter stating that they tried to reach me by email and by phone about paying for the repair of my motherboard because my motherboard had "Customer Induced Damage" which wouldn't allow it to be repaired under warranty. This letter in an of itself was a lie because not once did ASUS contact me to notify me about the RMA status of my motherboard, no phone calls...nothing. But the overwhelming problem was that they said my board had customer induced damage without even telling me what this damage was.

I immediately sent a letter back to ASUS customer support stating how it's impossible that my board had customer induced damage because it was in pristine condition before I sent it off...no marks, blown components, overclocking damage, chip damage, anything because I took exceptional care of my motherboard and didn't modify anything in anyway...I didn't even overclock it. After a couple of days I received a message that stated my motherboard was "burned" and that's why it wasn't covered under the normal RMA process. How can a brand new motherboard fresh out the box and in use for only a month suddenly burn with no power surges or any case modifications that could cause a short?! More than likely seems like a faulty component to me within the motherboard itself according to the numerous reports on the Internet I've seen about these boot loop problems with this motherboard. Are you telling me all these people have "burned" motherboards as well???

Other Thoughts: At this point I'm extremely upset, I now have a $200 dollar paperweight from a motherboard that went dead with only a month of use and no support from ASUS concerning a repair or giving me a replacement motherboard. I've been an ASUS customer for years now, but I have to say this is the last motherboard I ever buy from them. I won't make the same mistake twice and be left footing the bill like I am now for a problem that wasn't caused by me.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Chris M,

I certainly understand your concern with the RMA process of the motherboard and how frustrated are you with the service that was provided to you by our support. On behalf of ASUS, I would like to convey my sincerest apology this issue has caused you. I would like to personally assist with this matter. Can you please provide me the serial number of the unit and RMA number that has been provided to you? Kindly email it to me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150462315 in the subject line for a reference.

Best regards,
Manuel
