The Asus A78M-E delivers the quality, features, and affordability for you to build a budget-friendly AMD Kaveri APU-based system. This motherboard is powered by an AMD A78 FCH (Bolton D3), and accommodates the latest AMD FM2+/FM2 APUs that integrate the powerful Radeon HD Series Graphics. This means you'll enjoy discrete-class graphics acceleration in your games and daily applications, without the cost or power consumption of an actual discrete video card.

This motherboard is built with an array of Asus features that make it stand out immediately. Asus 5X Protection provides all-round protection to achieve the best reliability and durability. The new UEFI BIOS makes system setting and tuning friendlier, easier, and more intuitive. The EPU optimizes power consumption by automatically detecting the CPU loading level, and the Fan Xpert helps your system achieve the perfect balance between cooling and noise with dedicated CPU and case fan controls.  This motherboard also natively supports USB 3.0 and SATA III for you to get the best performance from your devices.

  • newegg AMD A-series Accelerated Processor This motherboard fully supports the latest AMD Socket FM2+ Kaveri APUs with AMD Radeon R series graphics, and retains compatibility with AMD Socket FM2 (Richland and Trinity) APUs. AMD Socket FM2+ APUs support Microsoft DirectX 11.1 for incredibly fast and smooth graphics, and native PCI Express 3.0 for full-speed expansion.
  • newegg 5X Protection Asus motherboards guard your PC with 5X Protection. This motherboard uses quality components like DIGI+ VRM digital power design for precise APU power on demand, ESD units tested to strict standards that eliminate electrostatic interference, and resettable fuses around the DRAM slots to prevent overcurrent and short-circuit damage. Corrosion-resistant back I/O shields are also adopted, providing the best possible reliability and durability.
  • newegg New UEFI BIOS The media-renowned UEFI BIOS from Asus provides the smoothest mouse-controlled graphical BIOS, and now features more intuitive functions to quickly take you to favorite BIOS pages and frequently accessed settings through custom shortcuts. You can even write quick notes in-BIOS for future reference, view an activity log of setting changes and modifications, and rename SATA ports. EZ Mode has a whole new look, upgraded with extra-friendly capabilities like detailed fan controls, D.O.C.P profile settings, SATA information, and fast clock adjustment. Together, these perfect your BIOS experience.
  • newegg EPU Tap into the world's first real-time PC power-saving chip through the AI Suite 3 utility. Get total system-wide energy optimization by automatically detecting current PC loadings and intelligently moderating power consumption. It can manually switch to Away Mode, so that you can download and stream content or backup data when away from your PC, which minimizes the power draw to save money and creates a more efficient PC.
  • newegg SATA III and USB 3.0 with UASP Support Asus provides SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports with enhanced scalability, faster data retrieval, and double the bandwidth of SATA 3Gb/s. The USB 3.0 offers blistering fast connectivity with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. Asus USB 3.0 Boost technology supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) in Windows 8. With USB 3.0 Boost technology, a USB device's transmission speed is significantly increased up to 170%, adding to the already fast USB 3.0 performance. Asus software automatically accelerates data rates for compatible USB 3.0 peripherals without any user interaction.
  • newegg AI Suite 3 Asus AI Suite 3 offers a brand-new user experience through a clearer and more attractive interface with support for larger monitors. It consolidates all exclusive Asus features into one simple-to-use package, allowing you to supervise overclocking, energy consumption, fan speeds, voltages, and more. This all-in-one app offers diverse and easy to use functionality, with no need to switch back and forth between different utilities.

1 out of 5 eggsTypical Asus Quality

Pros: multi-display capability, raid support

Cons: graphics portion crashes , frequent BSOD, so far it reboots and works, asus wont let you buy a better board to replace, only option is send it in and wait for repair, like I can wait 2-3 weeks without a computer. Typical Asus, I should have learned the first time.

Other Thoughts: Had a display in an asus laptop crash too, their option was to replace it at more than the cost of the laptop.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Michael,

I am sorry that you are not satisfied with your motherboard and that it is not working as you'd want it to. What error code does your BSOD display? Also, are your BIOS up to date, and have you ran memory test to see if your RAM isn't defecctive? Please email me at
cl-justin@asus.com, so i can further assist you. Your case # for reference is N150883791

Thanks for choosing ASUS

Regards,
Justin

5 out of 5 eggsGood HTPC board

Pros: HDMI output with a good socket. Overall was reliable, plenty of room for a single PCI-e 3 expansion card.

Cons: a little cramped in terms of expansion slots

Other Thoughts: If you end up upgrading this later to use discrete graphics, bear in mind that the pcie 1 slot is right by the pcie3 slot so most double-wide discrete GPUs will not fit while a pcie1 network card is installed. if you're using this with an APU of course this isn't an issue.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Windows Server

Pros: Lots of SATA ports, which is why I purchased this to use as a FILE SERVER for my home.

Cons: Doesn't support Windows Server. Multiple multimedia enabled televisions, music players and computers and it won't allow an operating system that handles the connections. Useless for the purpose I purchased it. Why don't manufactures post what operating systems they will support? Would have been nice to know before wasting my time on this.

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't waste my money on it. Vista Drivers work for installing the RAID in Windows 2008 Server, but the RaidXpert will not install to manage the drives - will not support this version of Windows, and the Vista version that does install doesn't even see the array.

5 out of 5 eggsworks for playing battlefield 4

Pros: I'm able to play Battlefield 4 as well as other 3d games. Zero config needed on motherboard. Easy setup and wire config.

Cons: Had a couple of soft boots the first week but haven't had any problems since then.

Other Thoughts: Great motherboard for setting up a < $500 gaming system for me, I mean my kid.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Budget Board

Pros: Smart interface, UEFI bios. Price.

Cons: Not much upgrade-ability, but for the price, what do you expect?

Other Thoughts: I would buy this board again for a budget machine. Using the AMD APU cuts costs and no graphics card is needed. I am running at stock clock rates, with 2X4gb ram PC1600. Using as media center with some game play. I have an SSD for windows, and HDD for storage. It is plugged strait into my 60 inch TV, and I use a wireless adapter for WiFi. Works great for me. Just know your build. I have heat sinks on it with no fans, so absolutely quite. Like I said, great for budget builds.

Other Thoughts: You can pay a lot more for another MOBO and not get as much.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Value Board I've Hard The Pleasure To Work With

Pros: - Good layout for a budget board

- Sata III and USB 3 both work as they should

- Our performing an MSI 760GMA FX board that I put in another system at the same time with close to the same hardware in relative terms, and it was $10 more for that board.

- UEFI (Asus has the best IMO)

- Running cool even though the board is lacking in the heat sink department.

- I really like the gold theme that Asus had going

- Additional USB 3 for the front panel is a plus for a board in this range.

Cons: - Well, not the boards fault here but Newegg sent me an open box version of this board by mistake. No manual, sata cables, or disc. I told the newegg rep the motherboard wrap hadn't been opened but after I got off the phone and looked at it, you could tell it had.

- Only 2 USB 2.0. Not deducting from the score because I knew that before purchase BUT if you are installing windows off of a USB and have to have the mouse and keyboard hooked up at the same time it can be tricky. USB 3 wouldn't work until the drivers were installed, but I made it work out, just took some switching around.

Other Thoughts: Newegg was quick to help my resolve my issue. The rep (Robert I believe) asked if I would like a replacement or was I ok with the board and just wanted some sata cables shipped. Due to the price and the fact that the board works flawlessly and was only $45, I just decided a couple sata cables was all I needed (manuals and drivers are easy to come by).

I love Newegg and therefore no egg's deducted. They did make a mistake, but we are all human and The client still has the manufactures warranty due to actually paying for a new retail version.

Paired this with an Athlon 760k and a R7 260x for a super cheap but decent gaming pc. No complaints on its functionality.

Great board overall.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Value

Pros: Low Price, USB 3.0, SATA 6G, gigabit LAN, 8 channel audio and did I say low price.

Cons: Nothing. Perhaps 8 channel port outputs at the back would be nice but for the price, you cannot ask for more.

Other Thoughts: I paired this with a cheap AMD A4-7300. Use an old 125G SSD, an old case, old 4G memory, and an old monitor. Paying nothing for these old components, I spent $77 and built up a HTPC for the basement. The system just worked great. The installation has no problem at all. The system just up and running immediately after the installation, and is quite fast for a HTPC. It may exerts for multitasking, but running two or three applications including windows media center is not a problem at all. I am very happy with it and the AMD CPU.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds Bios Update

Pros: It has a nice layout with USB 3.0 headers, and such.

Cons: I can't get it to post with my Athlon II X4 860K. i am hoping and assuming it just needs a bios update.
