5 out of 5 eggsCan cram a lot into Micro-ATX with this board

Pros: Windows 10 support practically out of the box. Good drop-in replacement for Z87 or later chipset boards. Loads of SATA connectors, and supports RAID arrays from other Intel RST-based boards.

Contrary to an answer to a question posted here, yes, an Intel RST RAID array built on another Intel RST board will work on this one without needing to rebuild the array.

Cons: Mini-PCIe slot has no mounting bracket for cards and may not have worked with a mini-PCIe to Firewire card I bought.

A simple 'stable, no overclocking' option was missing; it defaulted to 'turbo' mode for my processor, and the auto-tuning application sped up my CPU by 5% while under-clocking my RAM by 12% for some reason. I had to hand-configure this board to not overclock or underclock anything.

SATA RAID will fail if you disable Windows write cache buffer flushing and try to enable write-back caching. Stick with write-through caching and leave write cache buffer flushing enabled.

Other Thoughts: I needed to cram a lot of computing power into a small desk space. After failing to make a full size ATX system work in a small case, I had to go Micro-ATX while still supporting seven SATA devices, Firewire, a GTX 760 graphics card, and a regular PCIe x1 capture card.

I also wanted to build for reliability. This tweaker's board is not suited for a novice builder because the default settings assume you want to overclock things. However, once I got the settings to match the processor and RAM's design specs, the board behaved.

Still working on a Firewire solution. I might have to forego Mini-PCIe cards and just go PCIe, which would use the remaining PCIe slot and prevent me from going SLI with graphics cards in the future.

4 out of 5 eggs*PLEASE READ*

Pros: I have been building gaming computers for over 15 years. I wanted to build my first micro ATX rig, and chose this motherboard because I like ASUS quality. Long story short, I put 16 GB of fast, good quality RAM in the board (I won't mention the brand because it's not important). The board only saw 8 GB of RAM installed. My technical skills are high with computers, and I know I had all XMP settings correct in the BIOS and everything. I tried everything software-wise to get my 16 GB of RAM to work but nothing worked. I ended up removing the CPU, and examined the pins with a magnifying glass. 1 pin (yes, just one pin) was bent. I carefully bent the pin into place like the others using a toothpick. I replaced the CPU, and all 16 GB of RAM showed up.

Cons: If you are having memory troubles, examine the CPU interface and make sure no pins are bent. One bent pin can make your entire rig not work, and it is faster to fix yourself than an RMA, if you know what you are doing. If you are not familiar with computers too much, or don't feel comfortable slightly modifying your board, RMA it FAST!

Other Thoughts: Solid board with a minor manufacturing defect. It happens.

4 out of 5 eggsminor annoyances

Pros: -Easy to use bios with ability to adjust numerous esoteric values.
-Bios is regularly updated
-Intel Nic
-Beefy vrm heatsink
-Premium looking io shield

Cons: -I do not trust asus warranty support at all after reading stories online. It is disturbing to know in the back of your mind there is a chance you will get a nightmarish experience if you do have to use the warranty service.
-Temperature monitor probes have fewer selection than sabertooth 990fx board.
On my other board I can use the thermal point by the gpu to create a fan curve for my intake fans to cool my system. On this board you have to manually adjust the fan rpm because that point isn't available.
-Intel NIC stopped working temporarily
I had to buy a pci-e nic at a store and run it for awhile until the problem went away. I still don't know what caused it.
-Asmedia Sata port same color as intel
When I used a different ssd I ran into weird explorer issues transferring files until I switched my ports.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tested all the features or used the onboard audio so far, but this seems like a solid product. I hope asus can add more temp sensors for future iterations of this series.

1 out of 5 eggsSuper unprofessional customer support

Pros: Great and super smooth while it's working .
Of Why I rated one egg, please read on.

Cons: Purchased on the beginning of May this year, after two month, it suddenly not working, I have tried unplug all the unnecessary components leave only CPU and one stick of RAM. The start led light up, but Q code is not. CPU fan and other fans not spinning. First I thought it's my PSU, but when testing with my watercooling pump it's working as a charm. So I contacted ASUS customer support , after 20 minutes of waiting line, a representative named Michael answered, he just taking notes of what I have said and asking questions which I have answered several times. Super unprofessional. This is first time I contact ASUS, really really bad impression. And this is not the worst. After another 20 minutes struggling, he said one moment please, now guess what, he is gone another 30 minutes without anything ., so I hang up... I don't know if he is going for his lunch or for a dating or even maybe taking a snap. All I know is he provided nothing of how to solve the problem besides asking repeated questions.

Other Thoughts: I like ASUS products, I still do, and I also have confidence that not all representatives are so low level. But with over one hour of time wasted with some guy from asus, I can't and won't give this more stars.
ASUS, check the recorded phone call see if I'm wrong. This Michael is so unrealiable.

2 out of 5 eggswish i could say good...

Pros: Can't give any since my experience with this motherboard has been nonexistent since it is faulty( i assume) .

Guess i can say it looks nice.

Cons: After i spent about 20-30 min wiring everything very carefully i was finally excited to boot up another build complete but to my surprise the power button was not working. i thought it was my case so i put another build into the case and it worked it brings me to the conclusion that my 2 pin PWR port is faulty.....wish i would get working parts from Asus more often.

Other Thoughts: if anyone has any other thoughts to what i may be doing wrong please tell me....

1 out of 5 eggsNo good - too picky

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: It's way too picky. I've tried 3 different brands of RAM in this thing (two of them being exact matches on the board's "approved" memory list) and it gives me the same error for all three brands - memory not installed. I read the forums and tried the suggested fix (press the memok button) and it doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: I've now had a non-functional system for weeks waiting on new memory to arrive. If the board says it works with a specific brand and model of memory it should work. I think Asus just lost a customer.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS has done it again.

Pros: Tons of power in a small footprint. The GENE board offers everything you could possibly want in an easy to manage package. The new Fan Expert 3 and AI Suite make quick and easy work of overclocking and taming your loud fans. The new SupremeFX audio solution runs circles around my older Sound Blaster X-Fi Ti card, there are no pops or squelching on boot or shutdown. The HD front panel ports don't suffer from any quality loss nor do they seem to pick up any EMI from the system. The UEFI is a breeze to learn and very responsive. While I don't take advantage of the M.2 port, it is a nice feature to have.

Cons: The only thing I can think of is only having 5 on board fan headers.

4 out of 5 eggsROG Gene as it should be almost?

Pros: Looks appealing for a GENE series board. No problems with the board found from a technical standpoint. Rear I/O plate great idea except the old I/O plate is more functional.

Cons: Red color matching of ports actually causes some confusion. If you do not watch out and connect your SSD to the wrong sata port controlled separate from the Intel chipset you will find it will not allow SSD secure erase to detect your SSD in bios.

Other Thoughts: This board is about a 95% out of 100%. Asus missed details that are basically simple oversights or cost cutting. When you buy Asus ROG you expect perfection. Color coded / gold plated audio connectors are missing on what is touted to be a premium sound solution. In efforts to make colors match they also colored all sata ports red which creates an issue with ssd erase if you plug in to the wrong port. Asus these minor issues still have me wondering what the heck? I suggest future ROG boards include red/black mix sata ports or perhaps a light up ROG emblem on top to differentiate them. Something as simple as a sticker would have been helpful in identifying which sata ports work with UEFI secure SSD erase natively. Gold plating on the sound connectors is a must even if they aren't really a functional improvement. The I/O plate is new and shiny that's great until its scratched. Please put the old style sticker on top of the new style I/O plate or include both versions of I/O plates with this awesome board.
