2 out of 5 eggsmPCIE Combo III BAD

Pros: Excellent looks and the board seems to work fine

Cons: the mPCIE Combo III module witch supplies WiFi and Bluetooth causes the board to not POST when installed. Pretty much nothing happens when the power is turned on. Thank you to Christopher W and his review for pointing this out.

Other Thoughts: I have a support email into ASUS for a resolution. I will adjust my rating depending on the outcome.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Zirbesma,

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Maximus VII Formula

Pros: -Great for overclocking (I personally have a 4770k and it works great with this Z97 Board)
-The overall look of this board just leaves you drooling, it looks amazing inside my case
-Compatible with ASUS ROG Front Base
-Ability to incorperate the motherboard into a full watercooling loop is an extra plus. (Plan to do a full watercooling loop at a later time.
-Fits overall theme of my build (Red, Black, and White)
-BIOS is very neat and organized, Very easy to navigate, even if you are new to overclocking or messing with BIOS features.
-Included software that comes with the motherboard is great.
-AiSuite3 offers a quick way to overclock and optimize your system.
-Included Wifi/Bluetooth is great for people who are not going to be able to plug into a router via Ethernet cable. Also can enjoy playing music from my Iphone straight through my surround sound without having to attach any wires. (I myself already have a wireless card (ASUS PCE-AC68 to go along with my AC68 Router.)
-All parts from my previous computer were compatible.

Cons: -Price is a bit steep, But if you want quality, you have to pay for it.

Other Thoughts: Bought this board after i had many issues with the MSI-GD65 Z87 board. Had to RMA with MSI 3 times (1st motherboard completely died after a month, 2nd arrived DOA, 3rd the BIOS would not save any settings adjusted and would revert back to default settings)
So far am enjoying the change to the ASUS Maximus VII Formula, and i would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a high quality motherboard and can afford to drop the money to buy it.

The only thing that could really make this board better, would be if ASUS would include PCE slot covers to keep dust out of the motherboard. I have seen them on one of the Sabertooth series boards they make. Would have been nice to see them included on this board.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Board

Pros: Couldn't tell you. It looks nice, but so far, that is all this board has going for it.

Cons: Board would not post, or do anything other that sit and spin, displaying only the 00 code.

Other Thoughts: Will RMA and try again. Should it fail a second time, I'll go elsewhere instead of ASUS.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very solid board. Plenty of fan headers, more SATA ports then I know what to do with and a plethora of USB 3.0 ports. Pins are labeled clearly (a problem I've had with other motherboard manufacturers), and the manual was actually helpful in identifying all the different features. The armor reinforces the board quite nicely, and I don't feel like I have to handle it like an egg that's about to break.

The BIOS is quite phenomenal; you can tweak just about everything. While not much of an overclocker myself, I do like the fact that I have pretty much complete control over my system and, if need be, can modify the system to meet futuristic needs.

The included software is a nice touch, if a bit overwhelming. Most of it is probably just marketing and won't help much realistically (Game First III) but some of it is actually useful, such as their MemTweakIt program, which shows you detailed information about your RAM (half of which I can't even understand). That's how I discovered that my RAM wasn't operating at the correct timings or speed. Guess it'll depend on what kind of user you are as to which programs will benefit you, but there are plenty so that's good.

Comes with several SATA cables (both straight heads and ninety degree ones), SLI connector, stickers for your cables (HDD or ODD) and even a clever sign to put on your door handle (like the do not disturb ones in hotels).

Cons: Nothing that's worth noting as con per say, just minor inconveniences (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this product from Newegg, but I did discover it on here so I wish to share my thoughts since the community has helped me in the past.

Booting sometimes scares me; the computer will start but instantly turn back off, as if it had second thoughts about starting. After a few seconds it'll start again and then boot all the way to the OS as if nothing had happened. Not sure if that's a design flaw, or even if the motherboard is at fault, but it never happened with my other components so I can't help but point a finger. Happens every third or fourth boot it seems.

The SATA connectors aren't visually distinguishable from each other; those that use the Z97 chipset and those that don't aren't clearly labeled except in the manual. Kinda wish they could have color coded them like Gigabyte tends to do with their boards, but it wasn't brain surgery to figure it out which were which.

The board wasn't packaged in any anti-ESD material, it was simply in a box with a plastic cover on the top. Maybe times have changed and boards don't need that stuff any more, but every board I've bought always comes wrapped in some kind of anti-ESD packaging. Not sure why this board has become the exception, but there hasn't been any damage EDS-wise so perhaps that point is moot. Just an FYI to other buyers I guess.

The board is one of the higher end ones you can buy before getting an X99 or something similar. Frankly, the price/performance ratio isn't worth it with those boards yet, and this one will satisfy me for several years (assuming it doesn't die). It's an all around solid board with tons of features that may or may not be useful to you, but it utilizes some of the best components for quad-cores. I'm happy with the purchase, even if it was +$300, but I consider this an investment so would recommend to anyone who might be on the fence with this thing.

4 out of 5 eggsDefective Board

Pros: See previous review under "William H." or "Cain H."

Cons: After roughly two weeks of use, this board died. One day it worked, the next day, I try to boot and I get no video feed. I unplugged everything, plugged it back in. I also noticed no power to my keyboard.

I tried taking my GPU out, and hooking an HDMI directly to the MOBO and still nothing.

Reseated CPU.

(Power Supply was powering everything just fine)

No error codes either - sitting at 00. (Even after I took the memory out....)

I called ASUS support considering my board wasn't under the Newegg warranty anymore and they walked me through flashing the bios - updating to a newer version. Did this by thumbdrive. - Still nothing.

Finally they hooked me up with an RMA to get this thing returned for a new one. Kinda annoying that they want me to actually remove the armor from the board otherwise it will be returned without it...

Considering I've seen very similar reviews, I would be cautious of buying this board. It's a very nice motherboard. It is aesthetically pleasing. However, had I known the hassle I would've had to go through - calling them back multiple times due to lack of information given to me over the phone... (They wanted a serial number - originally they told me this was on the front.. Just for reference, the serial number was on the back of the board because it has armor on the front.), I probably wouldn't have purchased it. Especially considering I don't really have want/need for the game that comes with it.

2 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: Nice looking board lots of fan options, as far as components go and bios everything LOOKS good.

Cons: I have had this board for about a week everything was working good and today it took a dump. Went to turn the pc on after work and it fires up into the bios. Weird I thought so let's exit bios and see what happens. Right back into the bios. Error AE OK no worries just a bad boot restart the pc and it won't turn on. Check power supply on a different rig. PSU was good so new PSU on the new rig, nothing board won't fire up is in endless cycle of trying to boot. Disappointed to say the least. Returning and going to try again with a second board. If this one fails I will be forced to purchase a different model.

Other Thoughts: I'm wishing for better luck on the second board!!

2 out of 5 eggsEXTREMELY POOR Service

Pros: Features

Cons: ASUS Service

Other Thoughts: I am EXTREMELY frustrated with ASUS and their support right now.

I purchased this (along with other components Aug 18). When building the PC I encountered a CPU error code from the MB. I RMA'd it back to ASUS. They said it was bent pins. I didn't remember any bent pins, but I may have torqued down the CPU cooler too much, so I agreed to pay for the repair ($130). When it was returned to me, it no longer had the plastic ROG Armor covering.
I contacted support immediately again, The first session (quoting from the transcript): "02:00:42 am Kindly accept our apologies in this case. Give me a moment please I will look into your case. Thanks for your patience Roger. I am sorry to say that right now I have no update about your Armour. In this case I am going to escalate this issue to the concern department for you. Kindly contact us after 48 hours to get the update"
Two days later..."we have escalated it to higher official and still the status is under process
Anyway I will update this issue
you will be getting the update within 24 hrs"
The next day the said I would get an RMA number, didn't get it, so I contacted them again..."Ok, I have verified and found that RMA is not yet created for you please few minutes. I will create for you in my end."
After finally getting the RMA number I sent it back to them (at my cost).
Just got it returned, and guess what - NO ROG ARMOR!

Contacted ASUS service immediately and this time the service rep said "It will be treated as a packaging material Roger.
you don't have to send ROG armor along the motherboard for repair facility" It's atttached to the MB! How is it considered 'packing material'. It's not on their list of packing materials...
"Do not include any accessories as they will not be returned or replaced. Customer is responsible for shipping expenses if requesting item(s) to be returned.

--User manuals, software, original box, I/O shields, retention mechanisms / brackets, stands/bases for display products
--Non-ASUS products such as: CPU, Memory, After-market Heatsink / Fans, other components, memory cards"

Now I have to contact ASUS estore to BUY replacement armor - if they even have it, a cursory look didn't find any.

So, after over a month delay (and being past the point where I can return to newegg) and and an additional ~$175, I still haven't been able to build my system and have to spend more and wait if I want what is supposed to be included!!!

Manufacturer Response:

I do apologize that you experienced issues with your motherboard and our repair center. 2 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboard BUT?

Pros: Good looking motherboard, works great with my 4790K, easy install, using 16 Gigs Corsair Dominator Platinum CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 ram, loving the UEFI bios.

Cons: Here's the problem my Corsair SP2500 speakers POP on boot up and shutdown, never did with the Asus P8Z68 Deluxe Gen 3 motherboard, I'm using a Corsair AX750 power supply on both systems, there's supposed to be a special circuitry to prevent this on the VII.

Other Thoughts: I wrote a E-Mail to Asus tech support on this problem, and here's what the tech support said to won't believe the answer!

"Hi Ken,

It is my pleasure assisting you with the issue of popping sound during

It is normal that a sound comes from the speakers,to solve this I suggest you to
reduce the volume of the pc when shutting down.

The amplifier of the speakers are intentt to amplify the signal given to it,that''s why we
hear a sound.

Kindly also ensure the grounding of the pc/speaker is properly done.

Thank you very much.
Victor S

Customer Service Center.
ASUSTek Computer Inc."

If this is there answer then don't ever expect to ever get anything fixed with Asus tech support....this a joke for a $350 motherboard with SupremeFX Formula 2014 audio. By the way the sound is great, its just the popping that is the deal.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello FVBounty,

I am sorry to hear about the popping noises you are experiencing with your board sir. In addition, I do apologize for the generic sounding email you received from support. I find it odd that he even thanked you at the end as well despite only telling you to essentially turn it down.

As for the motherboard issue you have, I assume you may have already installed the latest drivers, so I will move foward with a few questions in attempt to find a solution. When removing all audio drivers, do you still experience popping? In addition, did you experience this issue from your very first bootup, or has something else changed? If you have already troubleshooted all these questions or still feel the board is defective, I will be happy to have it RMA'd to me personally to look into this for you. I of course will replace the board if I can replicate the problem. At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email, including your reference number within the subject line, and we can discuss this case further. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you have tried so far, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you. Cs#N141065400

1 out of 5 eggsGo to a better company then this

Pros: good while they work.....

Cons: Their warrantee is worthless.
hope your never dies under warrantee....

Other Thoughts: I had a really good board till it had a problem.
They sent it back to me supposedly fixed. It was not fixed and was scratched from clips for heat in soldering.
They also say you may not get your original board back, which is garbage to begin with. They open it, fix it. You should not be getting someone else's junk. You should be getting your board back. It's too bad, my friends had told me asus was good.. They had to eat their words, when they heard what happened.
Go to evga they are a better company. Had something missing from them and they took care of it right away.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry that you had issues with your RMA. This model motherboard comes with a 3 year warranty from date of purchase. Indeed you may not receive your same motherboard back, as if it can not be repaired, of course it would have to be replaced. You may have even opted for a cross ship as this model motherboard does offer that benefit. I am unsure of what you mean in reference to your board being scratched. At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email, including your reference number within the subject line as well as your past RMA number, and we can discuss this case further. In addition, please provide me with the boards original reason for RMA and what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you.
