5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Board

Pros: This is my first ROG motherboard, and I have to say that I really am impressed. The included software and the robust BIOS allows you to tweak every little detail or setting to really make the system fit your needs. In terms of build quality, I have never seen a nicer motherboard - the ROG armor really makes the board in terms of both strength and aesthetics. All of the fan headers and connectors are thoughtfully placed throughout the board, which really helps to clean up cable management in the case. I would highly recommend this board to anyone who is on the fence about buying this board - it is worth it.

Cons: I had some issues when water cooling the CrossChill. I was using Monsoon free center compression fittings, and while the barb portion fit into the CrossChill just fine, the compression ring would not fit around it. The ROG armor that surrounds the CrossChill didn't allow the compression fitting to screw down to the barbs. Thankfully, the ROG armor is removable, so I removed it and filed away some material around the areas that were making contact with the compression fitting, which gave enough room for the compression fittings to screw down to the barb. I think this issue would not have happened if I had used a different type of compression fitting, since the Monsoon fittings are quite wide, but it is definitely something to consider if you are going to watercool and don't like the idea of filing the ROG armor.

Other Thoughts: I had an extremely difficult time connecting the 24 pin ATX power connector. I was using the new HX1000i from Corsair as the power supply. The connector was definitely oriented the correct way, and would slide in about 80% without a problem. However, after applying a HUGE amount of force to the connector, the cable latch just wouldn't latch. The latch was around 1mm from snapping onto the connector, but it just wouldn't go. I didn't want to push any harder for fear of snapping the board. I even tried putting something under the 24 pin connector so that the board wouldn't flex and it still wouldn't snap in. It is currently still not snapped, but the latch is literally just 1mm from snapping. Also, the connector is not loose, it's not going anywhere, but just thinking that the connector didn't latch properly is somewhat troubling. I don't know if this issue lies with the Corsair power supply, or the Asus motherboard connector, or if this is just a single incident.

5 out of 5 eggsTruly Excellent

Pros: This board is insane. If you like to play with settings in the BIOS, you're going to be in hog heaven. This is the most extensively tweakable board I've ever seen. I would have to take classes to learn and understand it all. Literally.

Cons: The only flaw I can see in this board is the placement of the M.2 slot. I can understand why they decided to put it on the PCI-E Combo card because of the boards armor but it was folly to put it horizontally. If you try to mount a 80mm+ SSD, the drive will be too long and the ROG armor and CPU power heatsink will prevent the combo card from mounting to the board. You can get the shorter drives in there but seems like people who have money to spend on this, would have money to spend on the high capacity drives, the longer ones. They should have did the same thing as they did with the X99 Deluxe. The M.2 mounts vertically. Problem solved. For me though, I don't plan on using a M.2 drive so really it doesn't bother me.

Other Thoughts: The BIOS can be overwhelming at first. Even the most seasoned overclocker would have trouble finding that one setting they're looking for the first time. I'm glad Asus took their time with the release of this board, it really shows. Be on the lookout for an updated review after I have some more fun with this monster.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboard!

Pros: This motherboard handles everything I throw at it! Low temps, great looks, and always turns heads with its raw power.

Cons: For some reason, the USB 3.0 ports don't work with some of my USB 2.0 products. Solution: Use a USB Hub. Otherwise, the USB 3.0 works with USB 3.0 products and some USB 2.0.

5 out of 5 eggsasus maximus vii formula

Pros: Ok where to begin... I've had this board for about 2 weeks and finally got the cpu for it (was using an i5 4670k and now a i7 4790k) and did a fresh install of windows and such. still running at stock speeds, I do plan on doing some over clocking. just the looks and feel of this board is great, and how it is in the case is amazing. upgraded (ish) from the vi formula. this feels more... just more there. the software is great for fan tuning and really just love this board.

Cons: none at the moment, but will do a follow up after a year.

5 out of 5 eggsdefinitely an upgrade from Z87 hero

Pros: This is a great motherboard with lots of over loving options and a beautifully designed bios. It worked perfectly right out of the box. :-)

Cons: The COMBO 3 unite could be in a better place, the VRM heatsink will stop you from mounting it with new M.2 drives and make sure you plug your Sata SSD's in the original Sata slot and not the Sata express connectors to get the most performance out of your drives.

Other Thoughts: Move the combo 3 to a different place on future motherboards!

5 out of 5 eggsI Love this board

Pros: I have absolutely ZERO complaints. This board looks great, has lots of features, and does everything I want. I have been seeing allot of bad reviews on this board lately and I find it hard to believe. I wonder how many people damage the boards themselves and don't realize they did, how many people wear ESD wrist bands for example?? prolly very very few if any, and that's a simple step to do to make sure you don't kill your board. and the list goes on and on. I know every now and then you might get a faulty board but I think allot is people error....or maybe I just got lucky haha

Cons: None!!

2 out of 5 eggsDied after 3 days

Pros: Great looking design
high quality components per spec sheets

Cons: intel 4790k

Died after 3 days, On the initial bootup you hear very load thump coming from the speakers, enough to where I unplugged them to be safe, made me have a bad feeling from that point on. (Honestly was hoping I was NOT going to be a statistic from some of the bad reviews base on the this and the formula vi board). eventhing work perfectly after I updated the whole system ( non OC,running factory sppeds) for about 2 days. then all of a sudden it started randomly rebooting, to a point it would only stay on for about 45 sec, after removing the epci iii card, things went back to normal for a about 8 hours then right back to consistent rebooting, I manage to be able to reinstall windows 8.1 but even on just running the bare CPU, MB, RAM, and 3 different Power supplies all bronze or higher. the system just continues to reboot at diffenent time and diffenent load even at idle, Asus tech support agreed with me on a bad MB within a minute talking to them (25+years building computers). I really want to like this MB and hope the 2nd one works perfectly normal. Newegg was very pleasant to deal with and a RMA is done, just need to box it up and drop it off, will update after 2nd MB is installed

Other Thoughts: Unfornaturely got a bad board. the reviews on this and the formula vi does make you a little concern about the quality of this product

after 30 min wait a guy name John told me I had a Incompatible RAM although My RAM was stated in the Manual as compatible. After 30-40 mins on the phone (I tried other RAM that he said was compatible still didnt work.) He rudely raised his voice to me saying "Well Just contact the seller and get a refund then. okay BYE." and hung up the phone.

1 out of 5 eggsdisappointed

Pros: Looks great.
Stable

Cons: Will not boot with the mPCIe combo III installed.
Customer service is horrible. By far the worst I have ever seen.
Terrible policy for "Add-on Items" that come with the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Let me start by saying that I love Asus motherboards. I almost never have a problem out of them and I recommend them to every customer I have. That being said, this is what has happened.

After doing the initial install and doing a boot test, we tried to boot up but had nothing out of the board. Checking all connections and verifying any possible errors in wiring or possible PSU issues, we started looking into the possibility of a DOA board. After pulling the mPCIE Combo III card off the board, we decided to try it again and it came to life. Very happy about that. Got everything installed with no problems. We reseated the mPCIE Combo III again and tried to boot and had the same thing happen. Nothing like it had a grounding problem. Found on some forums that previous ROG boards had issues with the L bracket on the combo card causing the short itself. Removed that and still had no luck. We figured that we just had a bad mPCIE Combo III card. No problem, we can just contact Asus and send this one in and have them send a new one back, we thought.

Here is where my 1-Egg review comes from:
My customer contacted the Asus" Tech Support" with this problem and the "Tech Support" had no idea what it was. They kept calling it a GPU and telling him that a GPU doesn't have Wi-Fi. So frustrated, my customer calls me and asks me to talk to Asus. I called around 6:00PM CST on 8-21-2014 and was introduced to "Kathy/Cathy". After explaining the problem, she had no idea what the mPCIE Combo III was. I had to guide her using Asus's own product site to show her what it was. This was not a quick process at all. After going through the normal "check list" she said that the only thing that Asus could do was do an RMA on the entire board. I want to stress that the board was working properly without the card installed. After I explained this, she started getting extremely rude. She told me that Asus does not warranty add on parts and will not do anything but RMA the entire product. I pointed out that this is a main selling point/function of this board and that it shouldn't be considered an "add-on". I asked to speak to a supervisor and was informed that a supervisor could not help me nor would she attempt to transfer me to a different tech support agent. When I asked why, she hung up on me. I would like to point out that at no time was I not courteous to her nor used any type of foul language to justify such a reaction. I encourage whoever is over the customer support for Asus to review that phone call. It was absolutely ridiculous to be treated that way by a customer support representative.

On a positive note, I talked to a Newegg representative and she was excellent. She wasn't able to help me with this problem because it was past the 30 days, but she pointed me in the right direction. I found out that the mPCIE Combo I and II cards are for sale on Asus's E-store but the mPCIE Combo III is not available yet. I Will have to consider other brands in the future

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Looks nice, wish I could use it.

Cons: Board had a Q code of 00 upon booting up, not even a BIOS screen would show up or even a post. Half the fan ports were not functional and none of the USB ports had any power.

The board was just dead weight inside a case.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings David,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard sir. The Q code is referencing the CPU and that it is not detected or initializing. Please make sure the CPU socket is free from debris and that there are not any bent pins when the CPU was initially installed. In addition, please make sure the board is not being shorted out from contact with something while mounted inside the case. If the board is indeed faulty, have you checked with NewEgg for an exchange already? Please let me know and we can discuss your case as well as setting up an RMA with ASUS. When you have the chance, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you have tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Cs#N140834516
