3 out of 5 eggsMaximus VII Formula

Pros: Obviously looks great, BIOS and included software is great, stays very cool, performs awesomely, the wireless adapter is absolutely wonderful- with a wired connection you can set it up as an access point and get awesome speeds for wireless devices near the PC. just in general its packed full of everything you possibly could want feature-wise as well as things you didnt realize you wanted. Good stuff.

Cons: This is a $350 motherboard. The problems I have with it, I should NOT have. I mean really. 4 of the USB3 ports on the back sometimes work, sometimes dont. Trying different devices has no effect on whether they work or not, and while I havent experimented with it a ton its simply annoying to have to pull my pc out and unplug/plug back in my keyboard or whatever is plugged into a bad port every once in a while. Needless to say Im annoyed that this is an issue on this not so cheap motherboard.

The USB issue is my greatest annoyance, that simply shouldnt happen. Some other cons I have are:

-I wish there were more internal USB2 ports
-I get some annoying noise out of the right audio channel sometimes (in the rear, tested with different headphones/speakers)

Other Thoughts: Its an awesome board. It really is. But its expensive. And clearly mine has some quality issues that simply should not be there. Normally this would in theory be an easy 5 star product, but yea. No. Maybe next time asus.

Conclusion: Even with my annoyances and poor score, I still love this board. If the price doesnt scare you off and you want to risk having a not perfect board, go for it.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsZ97 platform

Pros: Best MB I've ever owned! Z97 series really took the time to make everything top notch.

Cons: M.2 60m max length if your looking for M.2 it's worth noting.

Other Thoughts: A bit expensive but looking at other boards in it's class it's comparable to GB Gaming, and MSI Gaming Z97 boards. I felt it was the best out of these boards.

5 out of 5 eggsHaswell Matured

Pros: This board speaks for it self through it specifications. All the parts are high-quality and able to support a five year warranty.

This board represents the maturity in engineering that led up to this point. Devils Canyon plus this board is the cream of the crop currently.

Cons: M.2 will only support up to 60 mm storage.

Other Thoughts: Whether your water cooling this or not you're paying for real quality that you can't circumvent with cheap products. The MOSFETs cooling is a water coolers perk.

4 out of 5 eggsMore features than practically anyone would need

Pros: Very high build quality. Shroud is also very cool and adds durability to the board. Generous connections. Soooo many features. If you're looking to get into overclocking like I was, the number of features and settings is mindboogling, but allows one to tweak and modify in any number of ways.

Cons: The ROG armor shroud can make some add-ons trickier to install.

Most notable con to me is the positioning of the Combo M.2 slot. It's located in the upper left portion of the board, above the back panel I/O. This means it's rendered somewhat unusable by my 140mm exhaust fan. Thankfully I'd been planning on using a wired connection anyways, so the difficulty of getting the wifi module installed isn't an issue for my setup.

Other Thoughts: Seeing as how this was my first significant computer build, I may be a bit awed by features that are available on motherboards at half the price. However, I can tell that the design and build quality of this mobo does, to me, justify the steep price.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat when works

Pros: Lots of bells and whistles
Good audio
Cross Chill
BIOS Flash feature
CMOS clear (if works)

Cons: Very flaking on reboots - Need clear CMOS
Bad Design for ROG Armor
Popping on reboot/shutdown
Hangs after sleeping
Very Expensive
Medicore Software

Other Thoughts: Could be a great MOBO with a lot of neat features. Using the cross chill in a 295x2 water cooled setup. Updated BIOS and ran fine.

The PC went to sleep and couldn't wake it. Now can't POST

Q-Codes 92/99 - USB Detect and initialize PCI-e.

The bios had a USB 3.1 update which I might suspect but I rolled back BIOS and reset the RTC RAM many times.

Tried everything. To remove the CMOS battery you have to remove the armor which requires MOBO to be removed. This is a major task as it's part of a water system.

I have had issues before but I let the CMOS sit over night and it was able to post.

Could not get this pc to wake consistently since owned no matter what configurations I tried in the BIOS.

The TEMP_1 sensor will not work to control the fans. It will read fine but the fanxpert will not turn on when suppose to. Seems to be a known issue that they have not resolved. It is a pity since this is geared toward extreme/water people.

Bottom line is - Lots of bells and whistle but not a polished product. I think the BIOS updated had an issue I can't clear since unable to get past the USB Detect Q-Code.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I do understand the issue that you are having right now and my sincere apology for any inconvenience it has caused you. It's unfortunate if you think the "Product" is a huge disappointment. On the contrary, there are lots of very satisfied customers that are having positive experience using the product. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, the issue with the product is an isolated case. ASUS provides warranty for the product in order to fix or repair any isolated factory escape defect. I would like to personally assist you on this matter. Kindly email back at and place case # N150343924 in the subject line for your reference.

5 out of 5 eggsOffsetting same review

Pros: Solid build with high qaulity parts all around.

Cons: M.2 limited to 60mm size.

Other Thoughts: Offsetting the reviewer who gave one egg many times because he was upset. The eggs are not being shown as it should be when you have same person over same problem reviewing it over and over.

1 out of 5 eggsLong time ASUS supporter, not anymore

Pros: -Easy Setup
-Wifi/Bluetooth Included
-Solid / aesthetically pleasing design with ROG Armor
-Excellent BIOS capabilities

Cons: -Pricey
-Ethernet adapter was spotty, only connecting after several restarts. ASUS declined to honor my RMA citing damage to the board when I sent it back a few weeks after initially receiving it and being returned more than well packaged
-AISuite doesn't play well with certain drivers for Fan Management
-USB ports are also spotty and unreliable

Other Thoughts: I've been a long time Newegger, first time reviewer and it's a shame that it has to be for this product. I've always been a fan of ASUS products and their ability to innovate and design gaming components. However, after the nightmare of trying to troubleshoot a brand new motherboard and RMA it (brand new) only to get poor customer service and get charged for a replacement was a dealbreaker. From henceforth, I'm refraining from purchasing ASUS products and recommend the same as they come with little to no warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Great by Asus

Pros: - Fairly easy setup
- Very feature rich bios settings
- Onboard wifi/bluetooth is nice
- Onboard sound better than most
- Overcllocking a breeze!!

Cons: - Pricey
- Some of the USB ports can be fussy
- Confusing SATA ports if you don't carefully read

Other Thoughts: I didn't knock off any eggs for the cons for this board. It all comes down to reading carefully and honestly some trial by error. I had a few mishaps with the board and at one point thought it was a bad board... only to find out it was my own fault. I think many bad reviews for boards can be related to user err. I am no expert but this board is fantastic to me. I have never in my life OC'd and this board made me have to try it (if you pay 300 for a board and don't utilize it's features, then don't pay 300).
I used the EZWizard for overclocking and I am running my i5 3.5 @ 4.4 solid. It also has my ram OC'd as well. I have not experienced any setbacks and temps are no issue.

My only thought I will say is on the onboard sound. I have always owned Sound Cards. When I got this board I told myself I would finally give onboard a go. It really does have decent sound after you tweak some settings around. At the end of the day though, you just can't beat a dedicated sound card. So I have a decided to go with a sound card again.

4 out of 5 eggsMaximus Formula

Pros: Looks great, real solid contruction, nice bios, watch dogs, sweet box

Cons: included asus software is almost useless. Ai suite seriously botched my "auto" overclock on a very easy and healthy 4690k and had my very common g skill memory way off and out of timing. the rest of the stuff doesnt do to much the only useful thing is keybot. a little pricey

Other Thoughts: they should sell this board without all the software for a better price!!!
