1 out of 5 eggsGreat board - terrible support - 400$ board - 0$ Support

Pros: Tons of features, great fan control software + extension board.

I love all of the Asus boards I've owned, next time, I'll buy another brand.

Cons: RMA process is a complete joke.

I sent it in for repair and received the same motherboard back with no notes as to what if any work had been performed. The lone piece of paper that was in the box that was returned back to me had about 10 words that "described" my issue. "RAM no work, sometimes ram work"

The RMA form i sent in described the problem in much greater detail and also explained that the problem was intermittent and many of the different troubleshooting steps I took but of course, none of that made it into the notes.

I call the RMA center and it turns out they didn't do anything to the board because it passed all of the test they performed.

The first guy I spoke with seemed helpful and sympathetic to my situation and after I explained the problem, he put me on hold to escalate my issue to another engineer. Sadly, after being on hold for about 30 minutes a "Thank you for calling Asus" message played and the call disconnected.

I called back and the next associate had no record of my previous call so I explained the problem again. He told me that it was a "documentation" problem because I hadn't done a good job describing the problem when I first RMAed my board.

I asked for a crosship which was denied. They offered to pay for my shipping to get the board back but at this point, I've all ready spent 2 weeks without a working computer and had no faith the right thing would be done if I RMAed my board again.

I just bought a new board.

It is a huge bummer that you can't count on Asus to do the right thing. This is a premium motherboard and I expected premium support. It is totally understandable that some boards have issues and that some percentage of users will have to RMA their boards but this process was awful. Asus had the opportunity to make it right but failed. I can live with two weeks of downtime for a standard RMA but asking me to go one month with out my motherboard because of a faulty RMA process? Come on.

Other Thoughts: Asus makes great stuff when it works. If it breaks, you are out of luck.

2 out of 5 eggsSame Boot & post problems as many others have Just RMAed

Pros: Incredible features, very versatile.

Cons: If it only worked! I have had this board for seven months with boot problems from the beginning. Perhaps once in every 8 to 10 boots it would hang and report over-clocking failed even when not over-clocking. I could boot into bios and save the SAME profile that was running and it would boot fine. Last week inexplicably I lost my RAID 0 array on one of the failed boot attempts. I deleted and recreated the array, did a hard format and restored my data and everything looked good. Until.....

Other Thoughts: Yesterday while using the computer, it just died. I thought there was a power failure, but why didn't the UPS kick in? I then realized the lights were on so I figured it was the usual boot related problems. I pressed the power button with no response. I then unplugged the power cord for a minute, re-pluged and it was still completely dead. At this point I assumed it was the power supply which was the problem although the Corsair CP-9020086-NA 850 was only 7 months old. After checking my spare parts box and not having a compatible PS, I ran to Best Buy and picked up a Corsair CX750M for $80. Unfortunately this too failed to fix the problem. I then started removing and checking cables, reseating boards, reseating memory and I even reseated the CPU. I replaced the CMOS battery with the same results: NO POST, not even Q-Codes come up. The only evidence of life was the glow of the onboard power and reset buttons. I then attempted to re-flash bios with a memory stick. I tried with the same stick and bios I had previously used and it failed. I then downloaded the latest bios and it too failed.
This morning I requested an RMA and the board is on its way back to ASUS.
I am and have been a huge Asus fan for at least the last 15 years. I have a dozen builds with Asus boards with only one previously having to be RMAed. I am typing this review on an Asus Laptop, I am using an Asus monitor and I even have an ASUS router. The obvious defects in the X99 board as evidenced on these reviews and on many other forums which I discovered while spending hours trying to get this box running again is very disappointing. In addition to the expense, time and aggravation of the bad board, I am now without my main computer for who knows how long. I only hope my returned board works, unlike the reports of others reviewing the board. I REALLY want to continue to be an ASUS customer...really.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked awesome - for a year

Pros: Easy to overclock. Bios was easy to update. Visual Bios was very nice and easy to use. Great looking board, especially in a matching white case (Cooler Master Stryker). Great board layout and cabling was very clean.

Cons: Apparently not very well built. Only lasted just over a year on first XMS setting with water cooling (CPU @ 3.5 and RAM @ 2800 which is a pretty low OC for this high-end equipment). This board might have just killed my 5960x processor, getting the dreaded '00' error and it no longer posts. I will be ordering another board with better reviews, RMAing this thing doesn't really seem like a good idea since it is discontinued and seems to be having so many issues. The three-egg rating is pretty telling and I would rather not put a $1000 processor at risk.

Other Thoughts: This board was the backbone of my VR gaming PC and performed beautifully for just over a year (1 year and 2 months to be exact). Combined with the 5960x, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2800, Nepton 140 XL water cooling, NVidia Titan X 12 GB, EVGA 1000w Power supply, it handled everything with ease. After handling the most demanding graphics almost daily for a year, it died while idling.

1 out of 5 eggsDid not work

Pros: It looks cool, that's about it.

Cons: I received the mother board proceeded to install it. It did not work. I requested an RMA to send it back. The RMA apparently did not qualify from some reason and I was told to send it to the manufacture. They are saying its all newegg's fault and now I'm force to pay 300$ on top of the 400 for something I didn't do. Like always the customer cheated.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat X99 Board with weird design choices.

Pros: Lots of features, it's the mobo that fits between the WS-E and Rampage V Extreme. Plenty of USB3 ports and SATA ports. It's a great choice for those looking for a pretty motherboard with lots of features but unwilling to spend $500 for the RVE or the Workstation boards.

Cons: The USB3 headers on the bottom. Seriously ASUS what were you thinking?! It's okay to route and cable manage with a vertical case but I have it in a Caselabs M8.. it sticks out.

I would rather have seen the USB3 headers where the vertical M.2 slot would have been, and put the vertical M.2 on where the USB3 headers are right now.

3 out of 5 eggsOne RMA...wonder how many more to go

Pros: Great features, mostly worked (for the better part of a year)

Cons: So, I've had this happen in the past, the computer simply powers off. Unsure what is happening, or why it does this. Based on what other reviewers have said, it may simply be an unstable board. I did lose a RAID array thanks to a bug in the uefi bios when it updates to a newer version, as another user mentioned.

Now, I'm sending my board in for an RMA. Positive thing, they'll send me a replacement before I send my defective board in (courtesy a hold on my credit card of course), negative that I'm having trouble with this at all.

I have to say I'm unsurprised. There have been a number of issues with this board since I got it, mainly to do with the aforementioned power issues, and also weird bugs in the UEFI affecting USB input inconsistently, and odd hold-your-breath moments in the past with resetting the board (via the reset or power buttons). Its too bad, as I've had a lot of fun with this board. I'll update once I receive my replacement, but I suggest candidates look at the newer revision board, or just look at another board entirely where there haven't been as many instances of board RMA.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsNot very reliable

Pros: Lots of features, plenty of fan headers, looks nice

Cons: I have used this board for about a year, during which time it has given me nothing but problems. Unreliable for overclocking, even with a standard XMP profile. I was originally running a RAID 0 configuration with two SSD's. It would work for a month or two, then I would turn it on in the morning and it would say the raid array had failed. Don't update your BIOS either without backing up, because updating the BIOS resets everything to default, which in turn resets your RAID configuration...

Sometimes it hung up while booting, sometimes it would go into a loop where it would just turn itself on and off. It finally just stopped booting altogether and now I am in the process of RMA'ing it.

Other Thoughts: It was more expensive than other boards when I purchased it. I guess price doesn't always equate to reilability. I purchased a different brand x99 board for my other computer for half the price, and I have had far fewer issues with it.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this product - very buggy

Pros: 12 SATA connections, Wi-Fi A/C, many features

Cons: Original motherboard died within the first few weeks. Newegg replaced the 1st board.

Replacement board worked fine for about 3 months then refused to boot due to "memory errors". The memory was good but the board had an issue with memory. I used validated memory and still would only boot sporadically. Finally it refused to boot. Changing memory channels did NOT work. It would NOT boot with memory in 2a-2d slots.

Returned to ASUS for repair. I got to pay the $30 for the return. 3 weeks later, I received the "repaired board." While it would boot, it saw only 2 of the 4 DDR-4 sticks. Once again I returned the board. I am still waiting for my replacement board after 3 weeks.

Other Thoughts: All totaled, I have lost 3 months of use for this computer. I recommend buying another brand. In approximately 25+ computer builds, this is the most problematic motherboard I have ever worked with.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsExcellent motherboard too bad the external wifi card is missing the screws

Pros: Everything works well so far and accepted my memory sticks even though they were not on the accepted list. It overclocks very well and so far so good!

Cons: The external wifi adapter was missing the 3 screws that screw onto the back of your motherboard. Really? That warranted -2 eggs due to its price tag.

Other Thoughts: Excellent motherboard if the wifi adapter had their screws so I could screw it in. Now I have them pushed into the motherboard.

Not worth the RMA though and have a warranty for it

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Rachel,

I am sorry that your external WiFi adapter was missing 3 screws and the inconvenience it caused you. It looks like you have opted out from RMAing it since it is not worth your trouble.
