1 out of 5 eggsNot stable board..booting issues

Pros: Great looking looking board and well layed out ...hreat to see the layout advances difference coming from my asus rampage 2 extreme board

Cons: On my second board with the same issues..computer hangs when cold booted or restarting the computer every time...will not save any Cpu or memory settings in the bios...once restarting it will hang so i have to hold power down...shut it off..then power up and get back to bios...it will always say "Failed overclock" even with every thing on auto no matter what you do..only way to get computer to boot is to force it in the bios ...and i have tried every bios including running bios 0802..oh crazy thing is when you can get to windows runs great..go figure

Other Thoughts: Almost 500 bucks for a product that is unstable..read the ROG forums these is so many issues..stay away till resolved or enjoy entering into the unstable club

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None at the moment

Cons: I would not purchase this Motherboard. Its over priced and overclock wizard isnt supported by Asus. If you need answers why something isnt working right. They are more interested if you overclocked it, so they dont have to support you. I did a mild OC on the cpu. I continued to have Overclock failures and had to go through the bios and ramp everything down to boot windows. If you are interested in OCing your comp. I suggest finding another manufacture. I'm trying to save you time and money. The board is very sensitive. I have water cooling system and cpu didnt get higher that 42c. It still failed.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Product

Pros: Feature set, stability, overclocking heaven in the UEFI, color scheme, very well built with solid and heavy heat sinks.

Cons: Sound is mediocre with the Realtek audio.

Other Thoughts: Have this paired with three Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980s and an Intel 5820K. Absolutely zero issues with multiple graphics cards. Previous Gigabyte Gaming G1 WiFi would randomly initialize a different card each boot up causing problems in the OS and having to reset the SLI configuration.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Very well made and fast MB with quality components and I really like the OCD Panel and BIOS layout. Even better built then the Rampage IV it is replacing.

Cons: I attempted to install two NVidia 980 GPUs in x16 SLI along with a SoundBlaster ZXR sound card. I had the 980s in PCIE 1 and 4 and my SB card in PCIE 3 (also tried the other open PCIE slots later on except for PCIE 5 (1x) which is covered by the second 980. No matter what I tried the board was unstable and would either fail to boot windows or fail to boot at all, sometimes damaging my OS install (Win 7 64) in the process. Got it working a few times but it was completely unstable.

I RMA’d the MB back to NEW EGG and recently got a replacement and flashed it from 5.xx to 7.xx BIOS. This one is working stable so far with one 980 in PCIE 1 and my SB card in PCIE 5 (the 1x). I haven’t tried SLI yet as I am afraid I will have the same problems as before and do not want to spend hours reinstalling Win 7 again. Haven’t event thought about overclocking yet.

PS - I am aware that STA EXPRESS_E1 is disabled when using an X1 device in the PCI PCIE_X4_1 slot and have not used this function. Also I have a new Corsair AX1200i power supply and have also tried another 1350 watt supply so that is not the problem. My memory is on the supported list; Corsair 2800 and has also tried some Corsair 2600 – no difference.

I have attempted calling the ASUS tech line and after waiting almost an hour gave up and asked for a call back. It has been weeks and no call back. I also input a detailed tech request on their site weeks ago and no response. At some point I will try the SLI configuration again but am concerned I will have the same problems and will need to set aside a lot of time to try different configurations and possibly multiple OS installs. Bottom-line there seems to be some compatibility problem with SLI and a standalone sound card.

I am most disappointed that ASUS never got back to me. All I need is some advice regarding whether known issues exist with the configuration I am attempting so I do not waste my time jumping through hoops to get this thing working. I have exclusively owned ASUS MBs for many years but will have to think long and hard before purchasing another one. And for those considering buying this MB and want to do SLA with a standalone sound card buyer beware! (and good luck if you need tech assistance)

Other Thoughts: If you need tech assistance from ASUS forget it.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Jim,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the configuration of your motherboard as well as not receiving a response from tech support sir. What CPU are you using to run this config as I am trying to determine how many lanes you have? At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email, including your reference number within the subject line, and we can discuss this case further. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you have tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you. Cs#N141065539

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board but.....

Pros: Well built board with more tweaking capabilities than I can possibly fathom.

Cons: Current BIOS (603) doesn't play well with ASUS sound cards. On-board sound (ROG Supreme FX) is not acceptable.

Other Thoughts: My only gripe about this board is the lousy on-board sound. ROG Supreme FX was made to sound like it was substantially better than other on-board sound chips but it really isn't. Quite honestly, it sounds terrible compared to a decent PCI-E sound card. Distortion, sound surging, poor spatial imaging in surround makes gaming sounds suck.

So, you say, just put a PCI-E sound card in! Easier said than done. If you have a SLI setup with a couple double-slot graphics cards, you will find that the 1x PCI-E slot is covered by the graphics cards. Fortunately, you can put a 1x PCI-E sound card in any PCI-E slot so I was able to overcome that.

On top of that, I have found that the x99 chipset doesn't like my ASUS Xonar DX sound card. It has been documented in several forums that the x99 chipset has problems with sound cards. It isn't just ASUS. EVGA, ASRock and MSI x99 boards all suffer from the same problem and it isn't isolated to just Xonar cards. Other sound cards are showing the same problem.

There is a work-around for this by switching the computer in and out of sleep mode. This made my Xonar DX sort of work. It works fine after doing the sleep mode trick in stereo but I'm finding that the 5.1 surround function of my Xonar DX is wonky. When I run a speaker check, the speaker that sounds off is not the speaker that the software says it should be. In addition, they move around and some are muted from time to time.

Hopefully there will be a BIOS or chipset firmware revision that will solve the problem. We early adopters of new hardware always seem to get hit with these kind of problems.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Board

Pros: Features, OC potential, expansion potential, reputation of the brand, 3 yr warranty, updated Bios (coming from a Sabertooth X58... yeah, I know).

Cons: Price, but you get what you pay for here. A few stability issues (see other thoughts), and the location of the ATX power plugs for the CPU can be a pain (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: I got this motherboard because of the features it offered and the reputation of the Asus enthusiast motherboards. I'm not disappointed with my purchase, but I do have a few things that you might want to think about.

My rig has a custom liquid cooling setup (res, cpu, rad, gpus, rad, res). I as I was setting up the rad at the top of the case in push-pull, space to squeeze the ATX power plugs in became a concern of mine. Now, this is partly due to the case I am using (NZXT Phenom 630 Windowed Edition, which I also wrote a review on). My fans are soooooooo close to the mobo that it was a tight fit getting the plugs in, and then I had to get them so the spar pins from 1 of the plugs didn't go up into the fan. Making matters a little more tricky was the DirectCU, which further limits space. Now like I said, I think this is more of the case I was using and not the board itself, so I can't fault it for that, but I want people to be aware and plan a little better than I did.

Otherwise there was a stability issue when trying to OC the CPU, but a Bios update fixed that.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for an A+ 2011-3 motherboard with all the bells and whistles

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The software bundled with the install disk made getting the 5960X from 3.0GHz factory to 4.4GHz overclocked very quick and easy with more or less the click of a button.

The included WiFi adapter is working way better than expected. Pushing a steady 17Mbps stream. Just sort of annoying that I have to find a place for the adapter to sit, I keep it on top of my case for lack of a better place.

Cons: System wouldn't boot at first, had to go into the BIOS safe mode to get started.

Can't use the ethernet port because the intel drivers bundled with the install disk don't work. Since the backport LEDs light up as normal I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with the board and it's just a compatibility problem with the Windows 10 Tech Preview.

Other Thoughts: By default the network stack in BIOS was disabled.

This also ships with an older BIOS so be sure to flash the new one after downloading online.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Well-made motherboard you'd expect for high-end CPU.

Comprehensive BIOS settings and easy overclocking.

Cons: SecureBoot basically won't allow you to use other OS than Windows. You can disable it but it is messy. Have to go to BIOS, select Other OS, and then Legacy Boot, and then! Delete existing keys for signing.

LGA2011v3 doesn't work well with multi-Titan GPU setup, you have to restrict PCI-e speed to x8 and set kernel parameter pci=nomsi irqpoll to run at stable.

Other Thoughts: At this price point, I would expect much more from ASUS, but this one is basically indifferent from my previous MSI X99s XPower AC, which is $100 cheaper and as well-made as this one.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: huge potential for upgrades and expansions, fan jacks out the wazoo, solid and runs cold. this is likely as good as it gets in the way of 2011-3 boards. more goodies and useful functions than you'll really know what to do with.

Cons: prefers not to dare touch the 5960x i dropped inside in terms of overclocking. kind of defeats one of the purposes of the board, though this is minor for me.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this motherboard!

Pros: I love everything about this motherboard. It is smoking fast and it looks amazing. The black and red colors, combined with the red lighting makes my new pc look incredible. Everyone who sees it loves it. Has so many bells and whistles. Everything just screams quality on this product.

Cons: The price right now. One very small item is that the PCIx16 slot #1 is really close to the CPU and the cover that surrounds the backplate (the cover labeled "extreme"). I was able to fit a 980 video card into the slot, but it pressed way too tightly against the backplate cover for me to be comfortable with it, so I moved it to a different slot.
