1 out of 5 eggsDefective on Arrival

Pros: I carefully chose this mobo for it's features. I wanted LGA1151 and DDR4 but I don't really want to pay for other fancy features that I won't use. In that regard this is a great mobo, getting 5 eggs from me. But..... read the horror I went through below. ASUS needs to get it's act together on quality control!!

Cons: PCI slot 2 had a defective pin. I didn't notice it in the beginning and thought maybe I had to populate PCI slot 1 first. I tested both my PCI cards individually in PCI slot 1 and they worked. Only at the very end of my build did I realize that slot 2 would not work. Looking carefully at that slot, you can see one of the conductors is ensnared at the bottom of the slot. I have many hours of work into this build and I must now RMA the mobo to Newegg.
The BIOS might seem impressive to some but I was not impressed. It took 4-5 boots before the BIOS finally started following my preferred device order. I'll take proper function over GUI and mouse sophistication any day.

Other Thoughts: I have built about 6 PCs with ASUS mobos over the years, all hardware purchased at Newegg. Some have thrown me curve balls, like having to install drivers at the PF6 install prompt (P5LD2). Some have required BIOS updates. But I have never had a blatant hardware defect like this, ever. I hope this is not a trend with ASUS.

I will never work with a new mobo again until I have first inspected every single slot, every single block connector with a giant magnifying lens and intense lighting!!

1 out of 5 eggsWhat a nightmare!

Pros: I haven't found any yet

Cons: I received the motherboard and it was DOA. Contacted Newegg and started the RMA process. Rebuilt the machine with the old motherboard and processor. It took right around a month to get the replacement board. Installed the new board and the good new was it works (sort of). I upgraded from an ASUS P8z68-V Pro Gen 3. I found the bios to be much more intuitive on the old board. I got through configuring the bios and got the machine to boot to windows. I had the ASUS AISuite 2 program installed and found that I could not remove it. Uninstall in Windows failed with the message "model does not support this application". I found that this was a common problem with no good solutions. I tried the cleaner from ROG, CCleaner, registry cleaners and nothing removed it. ASUS tech support was contacted and they said they were aware of the issue and that I should do a clean install of windows to fix it. I am also having a problem with the DVD drive. It will read some cds but will not format or boot from DVD-RWs. I was able to use the drive with the old MB and the same windows installation. Once again tech support's answer was to reinstall windows. When I reiterated that I was unable to boot a disk from the bios they said the motherboard was not the problem. Eventually I'll either fix all the issues or I'll wind up going back to the old board. I'm sure this board is great if you're luck enough to have all the planets align but if anything is off dealing with Asus tech support is a useless nightmare.

Other Thoughts: Update - The problem with the DVD turned out to be defective DVD hardware. I was able to find an old windows disk and was able to read it and boot from it. I was also able to hack up the windows registry to remove all traces of AISuite 2 and 3. The machine now runs fine. If you're lucky enough to have this board run problem free out of the box it seems to work fine. Just pray you don't need to contact ASUS.

4 out of 5 eggsreally great mobo so far

Pros: -z170 for cheap
-full DDR4/Skylake support
-USB-C
-Amazing BIOS

Cons: -bizarre lack of USB 2.0/3.0 ports (two of each) -1 egg
-no (official) SLI support, crossfire only (thanks nvidia)
-no USB 3.1, just USB 3.0

Other Thoughts: despite some weird cuts they have made to this board (no USB 3.1, not enough USB ports..) I'd buy it again. The BIOS ASUS has done is the best I've ever used and is easily one of the most comprehensive I've seen to date. The board looks good, runs great, and was <$150 for the newest chipset and DDR4.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice BIOS, easy to work with. Board quality is excellent. Really like the fan control in the BIOS. A lot of bang for the buck.

Cons: Overclocking was a bit more cumbersome than with the higher end boards. Ram overclock had disappointing results. Only 2 fan headers other than CPU fan. IO shield had a cheep look and feel.
