1 out of 5 eggsECS H87H3-M mobo review

Pros: Nice layout, physical build quality pretty good, documentation above average

Cons: BIOS function went south after about 4 months of use. Used in HTPC build running Ubuntu 14.10 in a small ATX form factor tower case and performed flawlessly. Moved components to a dedicated HTPC microATX case I purchased and decided to load a different Ubuntu release, 14.04 LTS. Could not get it to install from the DVD drive in either UEFI mode or Legacy as BIOS would not allow me to set the DVD as boot drive and then actually boot! The whole Boot section of the UEFI setup utility had issues. It would seemingly set the DVD drive to be the first boot device, save the config, then when it started to post would either boot from the hard drive directly, or the DVD drive did not appear as a selection in the boot device menu (F7) , or no selection would appear (no HD, no DVD), just the option to enter BIOS setup. It did this using the default "optimized" BIOS parameters or my custom ones. I tried a different DVD drive, same behavior. Tried a different SATA cable, same behavior. I cleared CMOS, loaded optimized defaults, same behavior. Frequently when I would save the BIOS configuration with the DVD as the first boot device and it unsuccessfully tried to boot, t would go back into the BIOS stetup and the HD was first, or the OS selection has changed to Windows, though Windows has never been loaded on this machine/mobo! Often, the HD boot priorities would show three separate instances of Ubuntu, other times it would show one or two or none. Of my main concern is the random nature of these occurrences, leading me to believe the BIOS on this mobo is corrupted. It is the latest up to date BIOS according to the ECS website. I have tried three different releases of UBuntu, 14.02 LTS, 14.10, and 15.whatever. I even tried Centos 7, same thing, could not get an OS to load from the DVD drive. I even burned new .iso images to see if perhaps the DVD was corrupted, but same thing. So it is not the DVD hardware, incuding the SATA cable, and it is not the DVD image discs themselves. Behavior is basically the same whether I try in UEFI mode or Legacy. p.s. Both the HD and DVD drives appear on the correct SATA ports in AHCI mode in that BIOS section, so the BIOS does recognize the drives. CPU is supported, a Pentium G3220, and the RAM is in the ECS list for this mobo.

Other Thoughts: Frustrating when board ran fine for several months, makes me think long term durability and function potential of this board is very poor. Even though this is the current BIOS for this board according to ECS, I will try to flash the BIOS as the board is now useless.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsWorking great

Pros: Been running great for nine months. Dual boot Xubuntu 14.04 and win7 with no issues. The on-board Intel graphics runs all my kids 3D games with no problems, but these are not high-end games. Very happy overall. I can encode an hour of mpeg2 video in 14 minutes at CRF=25 on the "slow" preset! (CPU is i5 2.9 GHz and 8G RAM) I just installed a similar ECS board (Z97) in my mythtv because I was happy with this one.

Cons: None for me

Other Thoughts: At this point, go for the Z97.

5 out of 5 eggsNice mobo

Pros: This is a nice little motherboard. I installed everything and it started up without a single problem. The bios is really easy to use with plenty of options to tweak stuff. Has plenty of SATA and USB ports and 4 slots for RAM. All in all it works great and does what a motherboard is supposed to.

Cons: Not really a con but i had some problems running a dual channel RAM kit in the blue slots. Not sure if it was my memory or what but using the RAMs XMP profile in those slots it would reset itself 3 times on start up from a full shutdown. It does say in the manual to put RAM priority in the white slots so just a heads up that apparently it does make a difference. Not enough to dock and egg for though.

Other Thoughts: This motherboard has worked great for me in my custom built system.

Intel Core i3- 4130 CPU
8gigs DDR3 1600 Ares Series RAM
ECS H87H3- M Motherboard
MSI Geforce 1GD5/OC GTX 750 GPU

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it is supposed to

Pros: What can I say,, for the price this MOBO is the t!ts. BIOS makes custom build a cinch. No need to change boot order from your hard drive to a flash or anything else in case you don't have a CD/DVD-rom with which to install your OS. HDMI port if you don't plan on a graphics card (or your card doesn't have one)

Cons: Only one 3-pin fan connector, would have loved another or two, but this is easily fixed with a Y splitter or just buy a fan that has a Molex plug.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent board; be careful about populating all four DIMM slots

Pros: Everything just works. It was easy to set up. The BIOS settings are extensive. I put an i5 Haswell in, and it runs really cool. Also, just want to mention that I had no issues getting it to work with Linux either.

Cons: Well, everything works great, except the RAMs. I have four 2GB DDR 1333's from Crucial. They worked fine two-per-channel on my old motherboard (from MSI) that I'm replacing. On the new board, they work perfectly one-per-channel, but nothing I did could get the system to be stable with all four slots populated (I tried increasing the voltage, various combinations of positions, and tinkering a bit with the DRAM timing values). I've got an RMA going now with Crucial, and they're replacing my DIMMs that have 16 chips per DIMM with some that have 8 chips per DIMM, and that should fix the problem. So just keep in mind that this board may have some challenges if you want to populate all four DIMM slots.

Other Thoughts: It has only one case fan port, but unless you're going to put a massive GPU in there, it runs so cool, it doesn't need more than one case fan. In my case, I want to blow air across the RAID array, and some people on an overclocking forum suggested a trick where you power multiple fans from the one port, but make sure that the RPM-sense wire is connected to only one. This way, I can make them all variable speed. I have't fully vetted that idea, though, so do it at your own risk.

5 out of 5 eggscheap and stable

Pros: Cheap and stable. What else can you expect for a daily system? I don't play game so I don't need a fancy one. Stability is my main concern. This board has been running great so far.

Cons: none yet.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking very well

Pros: I was looking for a Haswell model to replace my old Intel system. So far this motherboard has been working wonderfully.

Cons: So far haven't had any. If there is I will update this review.
