4 out of 5 eggsLost PCIX after 6 mo. no hassle RMA

Pros: Board worked great until I lost video on the PCI Express card. Swapped another card, same problem. RMA was no problem, Newegg is the best!

Cons: Also got the Engineering Only, not for Production on initial boot, but have not flashed BIOS, and have not had a problem.

Other Thoughts: Took a closer look at temps on the new board and found the the NB was running 70-80C (not using onboard video). Set up an internal fan blowing on the mobo in the NB area, and reduced temps to around 45C. Pure speculation that this caused failure, but less heat is better. Use the Nvidia monitor and see where it is running.

4 out of 5 eggsGood mobo, with a bit of tinkering

Pros: An inexpensive board with all of the basic on-board features and good online support and documentation. I've already built three systems (AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, Kingston 1x1GB DDR2-667) based on it, for use here at my office, and only one had a problem (dead onboard video). No biggie about that -- defects are bound to happen -- and I'll be RMA'ing that one shortly for a replacement.

Cons: You should update / flash the BIOS to the most recent version before you do anything else. All three of the boards I've worked with say "Engineering Release" when they first post / boot up. Flashing the BIOS isn't difficult, but if you're not familiar or comfortable with it, you might consider getting another board for the sake of peace-of-mind.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a good board -- I've already ordered three more of them. I was originally going to go with the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev 3.3, even though Newegg doesn't carry it yet. However, it costs twice as much as this Biostar and the comparable Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs are a bit more expensive as well. Saving $70 - $100 per PC and still getting a good workstation PC was worth the trade-off for me.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It has the features we were looking for

Cons: This MB shows on POST "Engineering release - Not for Production Use"
AND will not accept any new BIOS flash files from BIOSTAR. AND will not boot with a HDD connected , even from LIVE CD's
No word from emailing BIOSTAR.

5 out of 5 eggsyes, it works on Linux

Pros: Works perfectly on Debian Etch, either with the *VESA* (NOT nv!!!) driver or with the debian-packaged version of the nvidia driver.

Cons: Does NOT work with Fedora Core 6. . . crashes as soon as X starts.

My choice was change distros or change motherboards, and I had no idea whether or not I could find working video support in Linux for any other low-cost integrated motherboard.

Other Thoughts: If you want to check it out for Linux compatibility without going through all the hassles associated with installing the OS, try it from a Knoppix 5.0.1 or later LiveCD. That's how I found out that the problem was the drivers, not defective hardware.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat miniATX board for budget computing.

Pros: PCIx16 slot means possibility of a DX10 graphics card for the eventual upgrade to Vista. 6 Channel Audio and onboard GeForce 6100 means a great performance for Budget computers. 4 DIMM slots, a plus on a miniATX, as well as a 24pin power-supply connector.

Cons: Only two fan headers, one of WILL be taken up by a fan cooled CPU, the other by a case fan, if you have one. Only two PCI slots, and a useless PCIx1 slot.

connection for a legacy printer slot. Scrap that and give me more USB, or a 1394 firewire header, PLEASE!

Other Thoughts: Makes a great budget board. I used this as an upgradable computer for my parents. Don't care about any overclocking.

strange message appears in POST. "Engineering release - Not for Production Use"

Buying a miniATX car is like buying a fuel efficent car. You have to sacrifice the V-8 Smallblock for the inline 4. No sedans available, try the coupes. Oh, and you have to suffer with lightweight, failure prone material.

3 out of 5 eggsEngineering release - Not for Production Use

Pros: The board seems solid and has decent overclocking tools in the bios. I don't know if these options are in the Production board though. See Cons.

Cons: During the POST process I get a message that states "Engineering release - Not for Production Use"

Other Thoughts: I'm in the process of RMAing the MB back to Newegg and they are being very helpful. Newegg for the win ;)

Pros: loaded up without any problems, bundled drivers for xp 64 and xp came in very handy. Perfect board for a non sli gamer, great for building a business box as well onboard video and sound will save you some cash and keep the inside of your pc clear.
