5 out of 5 eggs880 chipset rockin

Pros: micro atx
sata3 (6gb/s)
HD 4250 integrated video
descent VRM setup (not heatsinked)
x16 pcie 2.0 slot

Cons: sata port placement
only usb 2.0
no 1x pcie slot
no stock vrm heatsink

Other Thoughts: i have 2 of these mb's. i like building micro atx builds that can also game and i have to say that these little biostar boards are great for just that. up until 2014 this was the only micro atx board i could find with sata 3 (6gb/s) in the am3+ socket market. you can get sata 3 in the fm2+ socket market but you can't use the FX cpu line that i feel is AMD's best gaming socket. i put MOS-C1 copper heatsinks on the VRM's and both of my 880gz's can overclock FX 6300 cpu's to 4.5ghz with no overheating problems. that's outstanding for what these boards are and cost.

i don't like the fact they are only usb 2.0 capable though. they don't have a x1 pcie slot to add a card to make it possible either. this alone would usually have caused me to give it only 4 eggs but the longevity of these boards deserve 5 eggs. i have put them through the mill and they keep on running. outstanding!

you will be hard pressed finding one of these boards now other than maybe a refurb on ebey but compared to what's out there now in the micro atx market it may be worth the chance.

3 out of 5 eggsA880GZ

Pros: Price. 6 Gbps sata.

Cons: Windows 7 constantly tells me to plug my devices into a USB 2.0 port. All of my chipset drivers are up to date, and I have even reinstalled windows with no luck. Very annoying. Also, I have a back lit keyboard which has to be unplugged and re-plugged in every time the computer wakes up from sleep.

Other Thoughts: Spend the extra $20 and go with something more reliable.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of (word censored) Junk

Pros: Hasn't completely died yet.

Cons: POST occasionally fails when powering up computer. Only recognizes my keyboard once every three times it's powered on. CRASHES THE COMPUTER CONSTANTLY! I can't play more than 5 minutes of video games before this junk motherboard fails and the computer shuts off. Manufacturer doesn't update drivers.

Other Thoughts: Avoid Biostar like the plague they are.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but this does not sound like normal operations of the motherboard. Drivers are updated by the chipset manufacturer, AMD for the chipset, Realte for the Audio and LAN.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: mATX board run AM3+
Handles an fx 8320
Can OC ( I don't reccomend!)

I only get it 5 eggs based on price to performance and that it handle an 8 core cpu after a bios update np.

Cons: NO mosfet cooling
Only 4 SATA ports

That's it, no other issues with this board.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased 3 of these boards, and they have all served well under proper use. I was able to unlock the 2 extra cores on a 960t with one board. and we fried another OCing a 1090t to 4.0. hit 3.8 stable. think we cooked the mosfets reaching for the sky. The most recent one is in my htpc/steam box running a FX8320 with a CM n520 cooler for a few month, HD 7950, and 8 gigs of gskill 1600. Lots of video encoding and indie games.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Update to my last review.

Cons: My board lasted from July 26th to August 15th. Ran fine for a few weeks. Started having USB problems (mouse wasn't being recognized) and then finally just wouldn't post at all. Smelled like burning electronics.

Other Thoughts: Bought an Asus M5A97 R2.0 to replace it. Hope it holds up better.

5 out of 5 eggsBiostar mATX UEFI

Pros: UEFI based mATX mainboard with native Sata 6Gb, AM3+ CPU socket, and DDR3. These features together in this form factor are scarce. UEFI is ver 2.1 ... have installed Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS and W7 Pro SP1 in GPT/EFI 64 bit configuration using rEFInd for Boot Management. EFI Shell V2.0 from the CD version of the rEFInd package works with this UEFI based mainboard.

Cons: Very small inexpensive board so:
Only one PCIEx16 V2 slot,
Only two DDR3 RAM slots,
Only USB2 serial ports and headers,
CPU (1) and Sys (1) Fan headers,
Two PCI slots and no PCIEx1 slot
Onboard DVI or HDMI display not both
3+1 Power Management and MOSFETs (12) without heatsinks for high TDP CPU or effective protection when tweaking. Minimal tweaking available but I don't trust it very far ... Multiplier and Ram Clock mild push only withou Voltage increases.

Other Thoughts: Suprise ... Smooth running and Inexpensive build!?!
No malfunctions or unforseen problems

Of course, i am staying inside the power envelop of an old 80W TDP CPU and the case has four fans installed not counting the CPU Cooler's two fans to keep things cool. Running without fan controls for now.

System Build:
Phenom II 550 x2 (Callisto C2 stepping) @3.5GHz
Noctua U9B SE Cooler
8GB (4Gbx2) Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3 @1600 1.5V
Plextor 128GB M5S SSD GPT partitioned
LG BD burner WH14NS40
500W PSU Modular ATX
Lian LI PCA04 mATX case
