2 out of 5 eggsnice board/low quality

Pros: easy setup
great price
has what I wanted
easy overclock

Cons: lower quality
slow death after a year

Other Thoughts: this board had a lot of what I was looking for. usb 3.0 Hudson d4 hi-fi, Easy setup, good overclocking. Was really happy for the first year. Then slowly things started going. First the onboard sound, which took me about 10hrs to figure out! then errors and finally just stopped firing. A motherboard should last longer than 14mos.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad for a low cost MB

Pros: Not bad for a low cost MB. Nice, easy to use AMI BIOS.
Minimal contents in the box, just the MB, 2 SATA cables, a rear panel shield, a CD and a very minimal instruction sheet. More detail if needed is on the CD.

Cons: Not really cons at this price, but there are just 2 fan headers, one CPU and one system. If you need more fans in your case you'll need splitter cables. No speaker on the MB or in the box. Cases don't come with them anymore, so unless you're rebuilding an old box like I was, you'll need one.

Other Thoughts: Got for a cheap build using a few new parts and some old stuff I had laying around. Other new parts:
AMD A6 5400K CPU
G.Skill F3-12800CL9D 2048MBx2 kit

2 out of 5 eggsBiostar clearly didn't try

Pros: PCI layout is pretty good, native 1600 memory support, cheap, USB 3.0 support (see below)

Cons: It feels like Biostar put 0 thought into this board. They said "let's throw some Sata ports on, an FM2 socket in there, maybe some USB ports or something." For example:

The board has one case fan header. Only one. So I had to go out and get three fan splitters. There's one at the south end of the board and one for the CPU cooler (not even PWM.
At boot, neither the LAN nor the USB 3.0 worked. I had to install CD drivers to get LAN working and then download a sketch Lenovo USB 3.0 driver. I paired the board with an A4-6300.
My Ethernet cable has the plastic housing to protect the plug. With that housing, the LAN and adjacent USB 2 port are too close together so that the USB can't be plugged in.

Unless I was absolutely limited by price, I wouldn't buy the board again. It's not even a "basic" board. For just $20, you can save yourself a lot of hassle.

5 out of 5 eggssweet little board

Pros: This is a sweet little board.
I have built three computers with this(Hi-Fi A85S3) Biostar board now.
One with an A10, one with an A8 and the last one with an A4.
All builds went very well with no problems.
I chose the boards because they have an onboard usb 3 header, and they are Biostar.

By the way Henry I is wrong the boards do have one case fan header(lower edge of board on right side) lol.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: In the last 19 years I have used Almost every brand of board on the market, and many brands that are no longer on the market. Biostar and Gigabyte are the two most trouble free brands out there. I have had lots of problems with other brands that takes time to work out. For what it`s worth that been my experience. lol

5 out of 5 eggsBIOSTAR Hi-Fi A85S3 FM2 AMD A85X

Pros: + Small board
+ Great location of parts (easy to install)

Cons: - The bios are horrible compared to ASUS

Other Thoughts: This board is great for what I am using it for (a 14TB server running Ubuntu 14.04). I have not had a problem with it yet, but it is still young too.

3 out of 5 eggsNice, but missing the mark

Pros: Board was well laid out and BIOS was was easy to navigate, plenty of SATA ports

Cons: Board only has one connector for a fan and for most that will be used for the CPU fan. Really? no other connector not even for a 1 case fan? That is a big miss for me. Upon first boot it had a CMOS failure error, I powered off, then powered on, still CMOS error. Went into BIOS and had to set board to default settings and everything works fine now.

1 out of 5 eggsNO support from BIOSTAR!

Pros: Palatable if you do not need the two USB 3.0 ports on the back to work with USB 2.0 devices!

Cons: The USB 3.0 ports keep dropping connections with USB 2.0 devices, such as HP Printers, Keyboards, mice, etc. I contacted BIOSTAR Support, filled out their "complaint" form completely, ALL information asked for, and they do not even have the customer service integrity to reply...still no word from them after 3 days!!!

Other Thoughts: This same problem was described as a "CON" by Li W under reviews for this Motherboard. Come on, Biostar, do your job. Obviously, there is no solution, the BIOS version is the latest, they just do not want to refund my money, or send me a comparable replacement (NOT the same model, though)! AND who needs a same model replacement board from these cheapskates, that would most likely have the same issues? After not hearing a response, I ordered an ASUS motherboard to replace it. Yes, a heck of a lot of hassle, reinstalling Windows, Programs, Data, etc., but that is the cost of doing business with BIOSTAR...NEVER AGAIN!

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles, please contact gerry@biostar-usa.com for direct assistance.

3 out of 5 eggsVoltage out of specification

Pros: Bios is easier to configure and give more flexibility than some other brands. No problems what so ever with AMD APU video and various video ports.

Cons: This is a wonderful general purpose mobo except that the +5V and +12V were reading nearly out of specification. I don't know if I got a defective board - I bought an ASUS for more money, but I actually liked the Biostar mobo features better.
