4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is an update to a previous review for this board (6/15/2013). Please see cons.

Cons: I realize this mobo has been out of stock for awhile and is in all likely hood discountinued at this point but i'll update review anyway. After sometime with this board I discovered that its mosfets(vrm's) are prone to overheating when under heavy cpu work load. This causes the cpu speed to be throttled down to 1.4ghz in order to cool off the board. I used this with an A10-5800k at 3.8ghz. In order to get peromance relatively stable without constant speed drops i had to run the cpu at 3.4ghz. Once i discovered what the problem was i placed heatsinks on the mosfets and it made a huge difference in performance. Before i couldn't play crysis 3 do to frame rate drops cause by the cpu. After i added the heatsinks my framerates were stable and this is with an overclock of 4.2ghz!
but despite supporting the A10 this mobo is probably best for a duo core cpu. Out of the box it doesn't seem to be able to handle a 100w cpu very well.

Other Thoughts: My original review stands as for all other aspects of this board. Its fine for a budget build with light to medium work/gaming loads. Solid board as long as you know what your walking into.

4 out of 5 eggsStill Working

Pros: Inexpensive, gets the job done, the lay out is relatively easy to work with. After 6 months it's still working.

Cons: I've had an issue with fan speeds but I can't determine if that's because of a fault with the board and bios or if it's drivers.

The board itself isn't very sturdy.

Other Thoughts: As of the posting of this review the new FM2+ boards are rolling out at similar price ranges. If this board doesn't drop below $30 I don't see any point in purchasing it over one of the newer boards as they're backwards compatible and have better features.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like it should for $50

Pros: -Works like a charm
-Has A10 CPU compatibility which is great for upgrades
-No problems at all so far

Cons: -Cheap and feels cheap
-Limited RAM space

Other Thoughts: Huh, guessed I lucked out with this one if so many have DOA issues. But for $50 this was a great little buy, uses a A10 APU right now with a GTX 660 3GB and 8GB RAM. Works great for an extra spare Gaming PC for around the house. Would only suggest for a backup and not an actual main gaming rig because it is limited in its "upgradeability". But for the price, it works like it should.

1 out of 5 eggs3 out of 3 NO VIDEO - STAY AWAY!!

Pros: NONE

Cons: If you are thinking about using one of these boards - DONT!! Save yourself the frustration and get a different brand. Newegg, I would highly recommend you pull whatever you have left of these on your shelves and send them back to Biostar. Biostar, you should RECALL every one of these that are out there. 3 out of 3 with NO VIDEO??? That's pathetic, and so are these reviews, many with the exact same issue. What is also pathetic was Biostars response to the poor guy who bought 4 and all 4 had NO VIDEO and you replied: "Sorry to hear of your troubles, 4 out of 4 boards not working may sound like you have a unsupported or incompatible part." Thats a pathetic response. You gonna tell me that too? I only build 100 desktops avg/yr so maybe my experience is low and maybe I dont know what I'm doing. Dont take any responsibility here, just blame all the consumers! You need to take a close hard look at your QA history on this product and figure out where you failed. Newegg service is the ABSOLUTE BEST around, and that is why I do about $25,000/yr worth of business with them. Newegg, keep up the great work, Biostar - go back to the drawing board on this one. This is YOUR problem - OWN IT. In this case for me, I was trying to build 3 workstations, nothing crazy for a client, now they will be waiting an extra 2 days. I decided to buy 3 MSI boards FM2-A55M-E33 Newegg Item: N82E16813130661 for $50each. They had 88 reviews with 4 eggs avg. at the time, so hopefully those will work fine. -Robert Carmen, Global Computer Consultants

5 out of 5 eggsNice Great for somebody on a budget

Pros: Cheap motherboard, not saying it's of low quality though. If your building a budget gaming pc definitely keep this in your mind.

Cons: None for me white writing on the motherboard is hard to see but i was able to hook everything up write

Other Thoughts: I might be the only person with this problem but my 8gb ddr3 memory should be running at 1600 mhz not 1333 mhz but it runs at 1333 mhz. not sure if it's my motherboard or RAM causing the problem but it doesn't effect my gaming.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the kind feedback. Memory speeds past 1333 are not auto detected, they would need to be manually changed in bios. In Bios in the Performance Menu > DRAM Timing Configuration > Memory clock Mode change from Auto to DDR3-1600

1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE!!! Very Limited Memory Support!!

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Per the compatibility chart, there is only select RAM that this board is compatible with. I purchased 4GB Crucial 1600 mhz and it would not even start up. I've never had a motherboard that was so picky with memory, and I have built dozens of computers. Newegg should pull this motherboard as they're shooting themselves in the foot by leaving several customers unsatisfied.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles, we are not able to duplicate issue you report. In our labs we have tested with various DDR3 1600 memory, this includes Crucial Branded memory. If you have not yet contacted Biostar support, please call 626-581-1055 menu 2 or email support@biostar-usa.com for assistance.

4 out of 5 eggsBasically good

Pros: Setup with an A4 4000 CPU for a basic Linux box with Linux Mint Olivia. Booted right up. Even works with (Win) Hoyle card games and (Win) genealogy software through Wine.

Cons: I've had a couple of issues. First the video seemed to display incorrectly on a few web pages for some reason. Since I had a video card lying around, I plugged it in and the distortion disappeared. So I currently use a PCIe graphic card not the onboard video. The Bios was a bit unusual but it was workable. Finally, I had a couple of boot hangs, which required a keyboard "enter" response to continue the boot. Since then I changed the Bios from boot "legacy and UEFI" to "Legacy only". It's too early to tell if this will have an effect.
I can't say how this will work with Windows.

Other Thoughts: It's working fine with the installed graphic card, and worked with onboard GPU except for a couple of distorted web pages.

Linux Mint Olivia
AMD A4-4000
Gskill 4GB ram ddr3 1600
WD Black 500GB HD
