1 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware

Pros: Aesthetics
BIOS has come a long ways these days

DOA 1x Expansion
Motherboard death after 2 months

Other Thoughts: Pretty standard build: core i7, this mobo, gtx 770, 500W, etc. As mentioned in cons, NIC was dead at build and 1X expansion was dead as well. Frustrating, but not enough to justify jumping through hoops for a replacement (tear-down, go through return policy and wait a few days, rebuild, etc.). Ended up utilizing a USB ethernet adapter. Relatively smooth sailing after about a week of fighting with a vanilla build. Fast forward 2 months, I'm guessing there was a short somewhere on the board as I started experiencing frequent (but still intermittent) freezes and boot failures, and replacing the board fixed this (after process of elimination with other components).

Be wary as the newegg warranty is only 30 days and the manufacturer warranty is a limited warranty for 3 years. My understanding of the limited warranty is this:
- You pay shipping back and forth ($40 dollars round trip with UPS)
- Manufacturer charges $40 labor fee (refunded if they find an issue)
- 10-14 business days for servicing (so you're looking at 2 probably 3 weeks out of commission)

Quick summary: $80 up-front ($40 on issue) and 3 weeks of time and you can have a repaired board.

Overall, rather unimpressed that I had as much trouble as I did from start to finish. Bad boards are a fact of life, but I can't in good conscience consider Biostar for future builds or recommend to others.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: -Price and features
-Aesthetically pleasing
-solid quality

Cons: -no Nvidia SLI support

Other Thoughts: My setup:

Intel i5 4670K
8 gigs of Corsair Vengeance LP
Cooler Master 212 Evo CPU cooler
120 gig Samsung SSD
500 gig hard drive
Seasonic gaming series g 550 PSU
Windows 7

I had zero issues setting up this system so far although I am still deciding what video card to purchase. I may have to go for an AMD card after reading the last couple of reviews. This Motherboard had the best features to price ratio at the time for z87 boards.

My previous computers have been with ASUS and MSI mobos so I was hesitant to pull the trigger on this one. So far so good. I really like the black and blue color layout. Maybe the debud 3 LED and hi fi LED lights should have been blue as well to keep the blue theme going? Not a big deal though.

5 out of 5 eggsRe: Careful with Nvidia cards/ works great with mine

Pros: Works like a charm thus far
Easy Install
Clearly labeled board
Easy to use BIOS
My EVGA GeForce GTX 760 arrived in the mail yesterday, and I was terrified after reading the prior review, but everything worked perfectly without a hitch right out of the box.

Cons: Non so far... Although the system fan 4 socket didnt seem to work, so I powered that fan with my psu... I guess it could be the fan's cable, I didn't test it with another one. pretty trivial. Everything else is fine.

Other Thoughts: I'm so glad my video card worked. I was so nervous.
So far everything looks great, I have two 27" 2550x1440 monitors, things are looking perfect.
Seems like biostar has some kind of deal with ATI as they support crossfire but I guess not SLI....

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for the kind feedback. Just to mention the motherboard does test fine with high end graphics card from Nvidia or AMD, the previous review you read is a isolated case.

3 out of 5 eggsCareful with NVIDIA GPU's.....

Pros: Beautiful board, very well built, full of features. Includes multiple new SATA cables which was a life saver for me because I didn't have any. Somewhat easy to navigate BIOS, great price point. (I got it for $97)

Cons: Doesn't mix well with NVIDIA GPU's. Had to return my MSI GTX 760 because of constant kernel/driver "stop responding" - I tried EVERYTHING to remedy the issue, including changing adaptive to high performance mode, PCI Power Link State to OFF, tried PCI 2.0, tried multiple PCI slots, tried multiple drivers including 314.22, tried multiple operating systems (Windows 7 and 8.1), regedited the TDR timeout, different RAM sticks, underclocking and undervolting, and more. Trust me, I tried e-v-e-r-y-t-h-I-n-g. The GTX 760 worked fine with a Gigabyte GA880 board, which was my prior set up. The only thing different in my new set up is the CPU and Motherboard. Same RAM, same power supply, same case, same hard drive (Fresh OS install), etc. I didn't want the Biostar motherboard to be the problem because I'm the type of person who wants to love new products, but I simply couldn't find any other culprit. This board or it's PCI/PCI-E use some sort of power regulation/throttling that NVIDIA cards do not like. Also, I found it quite telling the card supports AMD's CrossFire, but no mention of NVIDIA SLI.

Long story short, save yourself the headache if you own an NVIDIA GPU. There are plenty of other boards with the very same features right around the same price point.

Other Thoughts: I wish I would have bought a different brand. I am really sad about my NVIDIA card not working with this motherboard. Thankfully I only bought the card 3 weeks prior to assembling the biostar+4670k so I was able to send it back for a refund and purchase an AMD r9 280x, which is technically faster than the GTX 760, but I really wanted Shadowplay for easy broadcasting of my Dota 2 games via twitch.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but the mention of NVidia card throttling, you may want to check with the video card manufacturer for assistance. Note" There is no SLI support for this model as Biostar does not purchase the SLI license for this model motherboard to bring value pricing. But you can still use a single Nvidia graphics card, if that is not enough, you can use two AMD graphics card for Crossfire support which has native license support for this chipset

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad, not great.

Pros: Nice layout of board, made for easy setup of components.

Cons: Utilities don't quite work, and Audio driver keeps failing which is quite disappointing, especially when it's hyped as "hi-fi". Was having issues on initial setup as well and never got a response from the Biostar Customer Service. Took a chance on a different company, but I think I'll stick to ones with better (or actual) customer service.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of you troubles, please feel free to contact for direct support.

5 out of 5 eggsI love Biostar

Pros: Full featured, looks nice, on board numerical LED display that shows mobo codes and temperature. BIOS is well laid out, simple to overclock. Plenty of I/O, and generally very stable.

Cons: None, it's a simple board plenty good enough for a gaming or multimedia build. If you spend more money you can get more BIOS features, a bit better voltage regulation for extreme overclocking, not much else.

Other Thoughts: Very highly recommend Biostar, I have done AMD builds with their boards as well and they are very stable and well designed.

3 out of 5 eggsMarketing audio that doesn't work

Pros: Contains all the features I need at a decent price point. Fast.

Cons: It seems that one of the main marketing points for this motherboard is the audio, but given the quality of the audio utility that's paired with it you might be surprised to hear that. I just recently built a new pc and from the very beginning I've been getting "windows is out of memory" errors. I've spent the last couple of days trying to find the issue, and it seems that it's the SmartEAR 3D audio utility that comes with the board. I'm not sure how such a glaring issue gets past. The utility consumes a 30gb page file in a matter of minutes, and it begins to disrupt your ability to do anything in windows, and only because it's open.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your comments. Here we try to setup unit to duplicate your issue but no problems found. We rand programs and games while SmartEar 3D is running and no stability issues. If you have the time, please contact Biostar support to see if we can try to duplicate your issue to help solve problem.

2 out of 5 eggsMemory Slots Issues

Pros: Nice looking, nice features, nice layout

Cons: Broken DIMM slots. Won't boot up if any memory is in the Dual Channel configuration for Dimm A1 and Dimm B1, or Dimm A2 and Dimm B2. If I put memory in Dimm A! and Dimm A2 it will recognize and boot, otherwise, it's just a constant cycle of self rebooting. Thankfully Newegg responds and allows me to RMA it, because I tried to contact Biostar support, and they haven't contacted me back.. a bit disappointing.

Other Thoughts: I really don't know if I'll be buying anything from Biostar again after this; it's one thing to receive a bad part, but it's pretty inexcusable not to answer support questions... Hopefully the second one works. I'll update the review once I receive a working one.
