MODEL B+

New Product Launch! Introducing Raspberry Pi Model B+

Overview

Meet Your New Favorite Piece of Hardware

What is a Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It is a capable little computer which can be used in electronics projects, and for many of the things that your desktop PC does - like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn how computers work, how to manipulate the electronic world around them, and how to program.

Introducing Raspberry Pi Model B+

In the two years since the launch of the current Raspberry Pi Model B, there has been talk about RasberryPi's intention to do one more hardware revision to incorporate the numerous small improvements people have been asking for. This isn't a "Raspberry Pi 2," but rather the final evolution of the original Raspberry Pi. Today, this final revision is available, at $35 – it's still the same price. Meet the Raspberry Pi Model B+.

Highlights

The Model B+ uses the same BCM2835 application processor as the Model B. It runs the same software, and still has 512MB RAM; but following key improvements have been made:

  • More GPIO – The GPIO header has grown to 40 pins, while retaining the same pinout for the first 26 pins as the Model B.
  • More USB – We now have four USB 2.0 ports, compared to two on the Model B, and better hotplug and over-current behavior.
  • Micro SD – The old friction-fit SD card socket has been replaced with a much nicer push-push micro SD version.
  • Lower Power Consumption – By replacing linear regulators with switching ones we've reduced power consumption by between 0.5W and 1W.
  • Better Audio – The audio circuit incorporates a dedicated low-noise power supply.
  • Neater Form Factor – We've aligned the USB connectors with the board edge, moved composite video onto the 3.5mm jack, and added four squarely-placed mounting holes.

You're going to love Model B+, but to ensure continuity of supply for industrial customers, the Model B will be kept in production as long as there's demand for it.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic.

Pros: Wonderful little board. The B+ model Raspberry Pi is a perfect computer for beginners who want to learn coding in Linux, and start programming. It's also great for advanced users to create almost anything. Highly recommend this.
The 4 USB ports are really nice too.

Cons: To get analog video, you have to buy a small 3.5 mm to analog video and audio adapter.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid as always

Pros: Improved connector placement to eliminate the cable octopus of the Model B. The switch to Micro SD is a personal pro for me because I was using the Micro SD adapter from Adafruit on my other Raspi's. Two more USB ports and additional GPIO's.

Cons: Micro SD slot on for people that had used standard SD cards with the B.

5 out of 5 eggsTiny computer, HDMI output

Pros: A well designed, tiny ARM-based board. Lots of support available on the web. I use it as a media center using openelec, and made sure to purchase the mpeg-2 license.
It does struggle a little with HD transport streams captured from an HDHomerun, being close to 100% CPU. But, it will work for long periods before playback loses A-V sync or otherwise misbehaves. Stopping playback and restarting the file is usually all that is needed. Occassionally, I have to restart XBMC. I haven't needed to reboot in a month.

Cons: None. Just understand that this is a hobbyist device. Plenty of community support, but you will likely need to search forums for answers at some point.

Other Thoughts: I have only used my Raspberry Pi for one specific purpose. There are so many other things it can do.

5 out of 5 eggsneat little thing

Pros: stand alone computational device. great for a separate server as opposed to using a virtual machine. still trying to figure it out but its a fun little thing.

Cons: not very powerful. slow when using the GUI but that's expected for the price paid.

4 out of 5 eggsRaspberry Pi B+

Pros: Low power Consumption
Universal power input (mobile phone chargers)
Tiny Form Factor
1080p Resolution HDMI
Multiple USB ports
Numerous Expansion / Developer / Arduino Add-on boards available
Open Source Software / Operating Systems
Divergent Applications
Low price tag

Cons: Single-Core ARM SoC @ 700MHZ
10/100 Ethernet (Not Gigabit)
No native Wifi / BlueTooth
No Native SATA support

Other Thoughts: In terms of performance, the BCM2835 just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe the application I'm looking at is too specific (making my dumb TV smart), even dynamically overclocked in "Turbo" mode (1GHZ) it's hang time between media selection and playback was just too long.
Here are a couple of things to take into account though:
1. I am using a router that is past it's prime
2. The media its accessing is stored in a NAS box (also past it's prime)

Until the Pi foundation upgrades their specs to a multi-core SoC (a la BCM11311 or nVidia Tegra 4), it will be behind the power curve when compared to some of the competing dev-boards out there (Cubieboard and Banana Pi)

I will most likely get a CubieTruck for my SmartTV project and re-purpose the Raspberry Pi as a vehicle diagnostic tool or a home weather station (or one of the other myriad of projects I have on the drawing board).

4 out of 5 eggsraspberry pi B+

Pros: The raspberry pi b+ is so far the best raspberry pi out there it has a lot of thickness but is is a single board computer though. It has taken of composite video and added 4 USB ports and is faster and is overclockable.

Cons: it has down sides too it only runs 5 volts is thicker and bigger.

Other Thoughts: its ok and it could have bin ally thinner

1 out of 5 eggsBroken Micro SD Slots

Pros: n/a

Cons: I bought two raspberry pi b+'s and the micro SD card does not click the micro sd card in place. I tried with multiple microsd cards i have. None would work. I could tell it was trying to click into place... but it never would, making them useless. Disappointing.. Now to spend $10 shipping them back...
