Perfect server board!
- Pros: Price! An outstanding value for DUAL core Opteron server class board. Installed 2 pci-e cards, second will need to have bracket removed (raid card) in order to sit next to the other card.
- Cons: Not Cons, but things to consider: Only 2 pci-e slots, with only 1 able to mount with bracket. CPU fans needed are the non-standard 4.1 mounting pitch units. Large size makes it tricky to fit in certain cases (check dimensions). Also the chipset runs very hot and is in awkward location making it not possible to get cooled by case or cpu fans. I ended up installing a small 50mm x 10mm on the chipset heatsink to complete install nicely.
- Other Thoughts: **Also beware, this board is not designed and will not run QUAD cores correctly!!** Some users have been lucky to get some working, However, I would steer clear from trying even after the BIOS update. We have tested a few QUAD cores with very little success with the latest BIOS update.
Great Board, Not For Beginner
- Pros: Dual Socket F is fantastic, 8 core support, dual gbit LAN, great expandability for lots of hard disks, RAID setup, etc.
- Cons: No PCI slots! Not the worst thing in the world but even 1 PCI slot would have been useful
- Other Thoughts: There are lots of pitfalls on this board for even the experienced system builder. First the CPU fans needed for this board MUST have a 4.1" backplate as opposed to a standard 3.5" backplate. Dynatron and others make compatible fans that work great, just make sure they're 4.1". Also, quad-core cpus only work with updated bios. This can be done by shipping modular CMOS chip to Tyan or first installing a dual core cpu and upgrading from there. Despite PSU warnings, I was able to use a 600 watt ver 2.x PSU with no issues. Finally, unbuffered ECC RAM does NOT work on this board. Check Tyan's site for RAM compaitibility and get ECC Registered RAM.
Quad Core Success
- Pros: With updated bios from biosman (V4.0) I was able to get this to post fine. Had to order the bios because would not post with original bios (V1.01) - not too big of a deal I guess - will post additional comments when I manage to finish the setup in a week or so - too much happening at the moment to be able to focus on this right now...
- Cons: minor inconvenience - some stress as I wondered if this would even work for me...
- Other Thoughts: Tyan pretty much rocks with their mobos!
