No Problems
- Pros: Several months ago, I bought this board used from a website that Newegg won't let me list. The deal included the used board plus 2 X5450 processors for $1600. I put in 48GB of Kingston 800Mhz RAM, BSEL modded the X5450s to 3.6Ghz/1600Mhz FSB (stock voltage), put in 6 X 300GB VelociRaptors (on Adaptec 31205), and an ATI 4870 vidio card. I run test environments with VMWare of Oracle databases with muliple standby databases, Oracle RAC, OEM Grid Control, etc., and have had no issues whatsoever.
- Cons: None. Great board.
- Other Thoughts: The Seaburg 5400 Northbridge is close to the CPUs. Active cooling on everything (ram, raid card, chipsets, CPU, video card) is a must.
great if you know what you're buying
- Pros: Tons of memory expansion. pci-e/pci mix means you can bring along any really old card you must have.
I love having 8 cores in my workstation, and no ram limit in sight.
- Cons: requires an EATX case, bios isn't very flexible for fan speeds. fb-dimm's are more expensive than enthusiast ram. no SLI support.
- Other Thoughts: to the haters in the other reviews, and people complaining about power supply issues: this is (well, was) a very high end server board. while newegg's listing doesn't mention it, tyan's data sheet on the board does mention it has EPS12V/SSI power connectors, the EPS12V/SSI power spec is different than ATX, and any EPS12V/SSI psu you buy will already have those "extra" connectors you're wondering about. newegg sells quite a lot of them, actually.
the same is true of the extended ATX form factor, it's a bigger, more server-oriented, layout, usually due to the space constraints of having more memory slots and/or more cpu sockets on the motherboard. check out any intel or AMD multi-socket board on newegg, 90%+ of them will be EATX boards. every other intel 5400-based board is EATX, the cpu sockets on this board are placed where they are due to the 16(!!) ram slots.
Great board
- Pros: Support dual Xeon CPU's, and a ton of ram. Installation was easy, got the heat sink stand offs correct on the first try by eyeballing it. Just make sure the heat sink is resting on the CPU before you go and tighten everything down. Finding a power supply to mach the configuration was difficult, Corsait HT1000W works great.
- Cons: Directions are very vague; memory population could be explained better. The power supply requirements were tricky but as mentioned the Corsair HT1000W power supply works great with this board. Make sure your power supply has two 12v 8pin EPS connectors or one 8 pin and two 4 pin 12v EPS connectors.
Had to Flash bios and update to newest version in order for memory to function correctly, system would fail to restart correctly without the update. I could not use HD audio header because my case not equipped with a front audio panel. This was an easy fix with an affordable sound blaster pci card.
- Other Thoughts: Great board overall, but the configuring is a little more difficult considering the power supply requirements, the stand offs, the lack of audio options, the memory population, and the bios upgrade which was needed right out of the box. Make sure you buy FB-DIMM ram listed as compatible on Tyan’s website to avoid any stability issues.
