5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Server Board

Pros: This is a powerful server platform with lots of flexibility. The price is there, too. For the features you can't beat this board bang-for-buck. All 4 x16 slots are fully populated- a welcome feature on a server/workstation board. With two E5520s, I just cannot slow this box down, no matter how hard I try.

Cons: Not a con. I had a problem with a pair of GTX 260s under Linux on this board which turned out to be an addressing issue. All I needed to do was specify the BusID in the Xorg configuration... Be sure (!!!) to use Hexadecimal! I tested with OpenSuSE 11.2. More notes in the other section. Just know what you're doing and know what components to build your system with and you'll be fine.

Other Thoughts: This board has two "Northbridge" IOHs, but you do not need to worry about PCI Bus Addressing like on other server boards with dual Northbridge chipsets- the two IOHs have QPI links to each other, so they basically pretend to be one massive IOH. In case you're worried about a finicky PCI / PCI Express device with picky drivers that won't operate on a secondary Northbridge- don't. You can address it on both IOH chips (any slot) in the same exact way.

This board supports all Virtualization solutions out there- Parallels Extreme, VMWare, ESX, Xen.... Xen especially, with IOMMU and PCI passthru. I can't wait to load this thing full of RAM and kick off a few VMs with fully accelerated graphics on a third or fourth GPU.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent board, with a few gotchas

Pros: 1) Dual Tylersburg chipset for massive PCIe bandwidth. Every x16 slot is fully electrically populated!!!

2) Dual-socket Nehalem support, fits in standard SSI/EATX cases. Very few boards do this combined with (1)--SuperMicro's offerings certainly do not. This fits perfectly within a Silverstone Temjin TJ10, minus one screw mount near the RAM slots on the top edge of the board. Be sure to mount a standoff to the board here, or it will bend when installing RAM.

3) Integrated LSI SAS1068E controller.

4) Integrated IPMI+iKVM. This can give you everything from remote VGA console to remote bootable storage connectivity. If you have to manage this thing when it's racked up in a 1U/2U with a bunch of other systems, this is a must-have.

Cons: 1) Onboard GigE is Intel 82574L. In contrast, the 82576 NIC used on comparable SuperMicro boards supports better I/O virtualization. Not a big issue unless you're running with a VM hypervisor though.

2) Onboard audio (Realtek ALC262) is almost worthless. No fixed audio jacks in the rear (apparently only an HDA front-panel connector), and it's only 2-channel. Doesn't work well with Ubuntu 9.10 either. This isn't a big deal for me, as I've got an offboard card anyways.

3) You *may* need to update to BIOS 1.03f to support W5590 CPUs. Mine didn't post initially, and this might be one of the reasons why. Tyan was kind enough to flash the BIOS for me after I pulled the flash chip out of its socket and sent it to them.

4) The IPMC apparently can't gather sensor readings if the board can't POST.

5) POST occasionally sticks checking for USB storage devices, even with none physically connected. I suspect this is just bad interaction with the IPMC.

Other Thoughts: The board (or my Corsair HX1000 PSU) seems finicky about which 12V rail the second EPS12V cable is on. Even with a current BIOS, the board still wouldn't POST until I moved this cable to the other 12V rail. I'm more inclined to think this is some over-zealous short-circuit protection in the PSU though.

Enthusiast-class heatsink+fan combos (such as the Noctua NH-U12DX 1366) tend to block the RAM slot closest to each CPU, depending on which side you mount the fan. You don't normally want to fill this slot anyways--just the first three (blue) slots.

The BIOS chip is a socketed 32Mbit SST part, which appears to be in stock at Mouser:

If you want to have biosman.com flash this chip for you, you would at the very least have to send them the chip, as they don't regularly stock it. I haven't confirmed if they're able to program it (yet). Contact Tyan support f
