5 out of 5 eggsThere is no catch, this board is great!

Pros: This motherboard came with the 2.02 (May 2012) bios installed, which supports the ivy bridge cpu. I had no clue so I already had my sandy bridge i3-2100 taken out of my main pc and put in the server. Used Tyan's HelpStar website to leave a message for a Tyan tech about upgrading bios. He sent me the bios 2.02b (August 2012) and program to flash it within about 6 hours, very fast turnaround.

(1.) - You make a DOS bootable flash drive in windows (google it), put the tyan files on the flash drive.
(2.) - Power down pc, put jumper "JP7" on the motherboard to pins 2 and 3
(3.) - Boot from the flash drive and it goes into DOS. Just type in "FLASH.BAT" and it automatically starts flashing the bios.
(4.) - Power down pc, put jumper "JP7" back to pins 1 and 2

Congrats 4 easy steps and it is now updated with the latest bios which contains new updates, ivy bridge and 1,600mhz ram support.

I used a 80 plus certified power supply, NON EPS power supply and it worked just fine! People complained about trying 4 different power supplies, my first one worked and it doesn't even support EPS. Just make sure you have the 20+4 pin power cable, and the 4+4 pin cpu cables and it most likely will work. Don't get a no named brand power supply, but you don't have to spend alot, I spent $45 on my power supply.

People say this computer doesn't have power on through IPMI? Why are you guys giving false information?!? You set up the BMC settings in bios with an unused IP address on your network, default gateway and subnet your network uses. Plug that NIC card into the router, and you can connect to it with any PC on the network through a web browser using the IP address you saved in bios! EVEN WHEN THE PC IS SHUT OFF, HOW ABOUT THAT?

Its only been 1 day since I built the pc, installed windows server 2008 r2, and its been flawless so far. Only problem I had once was bios showing 8gb of ram when I had 16gb installed. I guess I barely bumped the ram while installing cpu heatsink and I just had to reapply pressure to the memory to seat it better, rebooted and 16gb total again.

This has both the L version network cards so ESXi will recognize them both unlike the supermicro board.

Cons: No USB 3.0

Other Thoughts: My system specs

intel e3-1230v2 processor
Thermaltake Smart SP-430P 430W ATX 12V 2.3 80 PLUS Certified power supply
Tyan s5512gm2nr motherboard
4x4gb (16gb total) Kingston KVR1600D3E11S/4G ddr3 1600mhz memory
1tb seagate barracuda sata hard drive
asus dvd-r sata drive
Rosewill REDBONE computer case.

Very happy customer so far.

3 out of 5 eggsGood board, but with a catch

Pros: Good set of ports, good form-factor, IPMI and other goodies.

Cons: There is a catch with this board - it ships with an old BIOS that DOES NOT SUPPORT IVY BRIDGE CPUs.
New BIOS is available for download on Tyan web site, but you need Sandy Bridge CPU handy to flash the BIOS.

If you don't have Sandy Bridge CPU - you will be stuck, because Tyan explicitly declines to provide new BIOS chip, and Newegg explicitly declines to deal with any technical problems and refers to the manufacturer (Tyan in this case).

Practically the only options you have is to either return the MB and buy a different one, OR find Sandy Bridge CPU to flash the BIOS.

In my case I didn't have Sandy Bridge CPU, luckily I found local service shop that was able to flash BIOS for me (they had various CPUs available). Otherwise I would have to return the MB.

Another problem I noticed - although the board has one legacy PCI slot, I was unable to get PCI SATA controller working in it to add more ports. I tried three different controllers, and all three had issues. It is a bit disappointing, but not as big of a deal as the CPU compatibility I explained above.

4 out of 5 eggsOnly buy if you already have an early 1155 chip

Pros: Nice board. Boots much quicker than expected.

Cons: Unless you already have an older supported CPU (I assume any older Sandy Bridge), you will be out of luck - which was my case because I bought what was said to be supported (E3-1275 Ivy Bridge). The BIOS was July of 2011. Post was a series of undocumented beeps. Tyan support was helpful, but still this is a major inconvenience. If I had not had a friend with an older CPU, we could not have flashed the BIOS to get Ivy Bridge support.

Other Thoughts: While I understand that these boards are not in high demand, Newegg needs to have a better policy in monitoring the age of the MOBO's they sell!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Server Motherboard!!!!!!!!

Pros: Quality is the thought that comes to mind when I think about this board. It is without a doubt, the best motherboard I have built a system with in years. Has 5 fan headers, Every expansion slot anyone could need. A quality server board that will last for years. I am glad I bought this board instead of others because it has more features, better organized port location and every expansion slot I could ever need. If this is was you need then get it, you will be pleased. IPMI 2.0 allow remote management and bios upgrades.

Cons: none but, before you buy make sure you have:
ECC unbuffered memory; I used KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G
EPS power; I used X650 Gold ((SS-650KM Active PFC F3))
Xeon CPU; The memory controller is in the CPU so you have to used a CPU that supports ECC; I used BX80623E31230

Other Thoughts: I also used a video card: HD-545X-ZQH2
note: The boot is slower than non-server motherboards so give it time to boot, this is common of all the Intel C200 series chipsets for servers. I am very, very pleased with the quality and placement of parts in this server motherboard. I will be buying more in the future.
