Comments on Tyan UI-Urbana experiene
Pros: The unit arrived in a box
Cons: Defective memory slots
Other Thoughts: The fact that this board was bad from the get-go and that NE did now own up to the problem is an indication of creeping bureaucratic 'it's not my problem' attitude at NE. Someone should have stepped in and cut the red tape, giving UI-Urbana a new mobo and a chance to fix the problem w/o going through Tyan's oubleck RMA procedure.

Terrible Motherboad and Customer Service
Pros: We bought this board for research purposes at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Physics Department). It was to be used to for QMC Simulations. The motherboard boasts 768 GB capacity for RDIMM memory modules at up to 1600 Mhz. Currently with 16 GB sticks we end up with only 384 GB. This was supposed to be good enough for our purposes.
Cons: Firstly, TYAN does not specify anywhere (and newegg doesn't either) that it actually doesn't support the rated memory clock rate for quad ranks. It downgrades quad rank 1333 Mhz modules to 800 Mhz. This is a significant loss for research purposes (not to mention the money). To alleviate this problem we had to place a special order for dual rank modules (and spend $1200 more). Which took time to arrive.
Other Thoughts: We understand the fine print, but 2 days is a ridiculous margin especially since we are just trying to exchange it because the mb clearly had a manufacturing defect. (Incidentally, we had problems with 2 other TYAN motherboards that we ordered in the same week, although these were with unresponsive cpu socket 1.) Also, newegg seems to make no accommodations for the time it takes to actually receive the items. Especially if items are delivered on a weekend/holiday.
