5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected.

Pros: I was taking a bit of a gamble for having never read much into AsRock brand. But im extremely satisfied with this motherboard. I never intentionally meant to push this board much, but now im glad to see just how good there build quality is. I stuck an FX 8320 on this OC @4.4Ghz, now keep in mind this is a 4:1 power phase, when ideally the fx should be on a 8:2, but its been running like a king this past year, along with 16gb(2x8gb) ram at Cl9 1866mhz with an overclocked gtx 660. Its been a pretty good setup. They have my 2 thumbs up in my book.

1 out of 5 eggsgreat.. while it worked..

Pros: Front connector for USB 3.0
The bios status LEDs
Supported the 125W CPU with plenty of overclocking room.

Cons: died in only 2 months. Had same problem others had, when the computer starts the status lights dont turn on, no video startup, but fans turned on...

I have bought Asrock boards in the past and they were rock solid.. but this one has a problem.

I contacted support and all they said was send it to us.. in the mean time I went and bought another board.. and dont want to spend another 20 bucks to send it back....

Other Thoughts: Be aware.. this board has a bug that sometimes kills it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the mainboard has malfunctioned after 2 months which’s due to nature of electronic product, it can happen.
Please update the replacement mainboard's working fine.

1 out of 5 eggsBad product, terrible company

Pros: Slightly lower price

Cons: Poor quality
Abominable customer service

Other Thoughts: Several months in, the board stopped consistently recognizing the hard drive during boot. About 50% of the time, system would boot to BIOS screen and I would have to reboot. Mostly worked once the system booted properly but the 3.5 mm audio and one of the USB headers were flakey. Various attempts at fixes (by both me and the tech support) proved ineffective.

When I tried to return this to ASRock, I was subjected to some of the worst customer service I have ever had (we're talking cable company level bad). To be clear, the bad service was from ASRock representatives. I will never deal with this company again.

Save yourself the frustration and buy a quality product from a quality company. The little extra you spend now will be well worth the hours saved if you ever have to deal with the manufacturer.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible For Overclocking

Pros: - Crossfire and SLI support
- Support for 8 core CPUs
- Sata 6 GB/s
- USB 3.0

Cons: - Weak power delivery 4 + 1 phase design.

This board is very bad for overclocking and becomes unstable with only a mild overclock. If I OC the CPU only a 100 MHz it get this issue where flash videos run terribly and games crash. I'd blame the CPU but it's the motherboard because the issue only occurs if it's booting from a shutdown, if I restart my PC the issues go away.

There's something wrong with the board where it doesn't calibrate correctly to the overclock when booting from a shutdown, but it calibrates to it if the system boots from a reset.

- Terrible customer support and product assurance!
I emailed them 5 days ago about the issue and they have not responded. When looking on their RMA policy it says they don't support you if you're doing any kind of overclocking at all. Which is bad of them because this board is marketed as an overclocking motherboard.

Other Thoughts: If you don't plan on overclocking with this board you'll be fine. My advice BUY SOMETHING ELSE! There are better boards for a better price that will overclock a lot better than this junk does.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Gref,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Mainboard has overclocking function. However, overclocking could damage the components as well as mainboard which depend on user’s knowledge, experience and adopted components.
Please check the CPU has not overheating while fully load to avoid the crash.

1 out of 5 eggsREAD CPU SUPPORT LIST!

Pros: Nice graphical BIOS

Cons: Does not support all 8-core CPUs. Newegg should have a big asterisk with this mobo that it doesn't support higher end CPUs like a FX-8350 for example. I bought this mobo last week with a FX-8350 and learned after it arrived the 8350 is not supported, I did find online that it once was though so I gave it a go but I get failures in Prime95 plus other instability issues. I kinda feel ripped off here but will try to send the mobo back.

2 out of 5 eggsI had several issues with this

Pros: It's made by ASRock. They usually make really nice things and have pretty good Customer Service. It also looks rather nice.

Cons: This thing has been very problematic from the start. All drivers are up to date. Here is what has gone wrong in the 10 months I've had it:

-NIC Failure, also makes a very high pitch sound when in use. (The NIC driver is a mess, it causes some real problems. I used latencymon to track down the issues to that driver.)

-Very loud, continuous 'Dog Whistle' sound emitted by the board where the main power connects and where the NIC is connected.

-Only 3 USB 2.0 ports work steadily. The USB 3.0 ports continually drop connections or flat out just don't work. Total waste.

One of the PCIe Slots is defective. Causes my GPU to run extremely hot and also caused frequent, random crashes. Everything ran fine after moving my GPU to a different slot.

The Dog Whistling sound is simply horrible to have to deal with. It will drive you insane. If you notice a high pitch sound, get an empty paper towel roll and put it over different areas of the board until you locate the culprit.

There are better mobo's for just a little bit more. I would suggest anyone looking to build a gaming rig to consider upgrading to the 990 chipset. Not that much more in price and you get a much better product. I have upgraded to ASRocks new 990FX Fatality Killer Board.

ASRock has offered to RMA my 970 for me, so I will keep it as a backup should my new 990FX have any problems. If you buy this, consider getting an extended replacement plan so you can get a replacement board quick. RMA takes a long time and not everyone has a spare mobo to use while waiting.

My Build While using this mobo:

Sapphire HD7870 XT 2GB GPU
AMD FX8320 8 Core CPU (Yes, I had that in the 970. Worked ok except for having to liquid cool it)
8GB GSkill Ripjaws 1600
Samsung SSD
Sparkle 800w PSU
CORSAIR Hydro Series H75
2 WD USB 3.0 hdd's

Other Thoughts: I guess this can happen with any brand. If you read enough reviews and comments on these 970's and 990's you will see they all have their problems. There are so many components involved that problems are sure to turn up at some point. ASRock makes great motherboards, guess I just got unlucky with this 970.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

5 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard

Pros: Great motherboard. Had to RMA an FX-6100 and AMD sent me a 6300 and it dropped right in and worked great. When Iwas troubleshooting asrock thought it may have been a board and was glad to offer me an RMA issue if I needed one but I got a friends AM3 athlon II and it fired right up so I notified them and RMA'd the processor. Thanks for the quick RMA AMD! The board stays under 36C with the rear fan blowing in on the mosfet heatsink and a top exhaust removing air from case. With a Prolimatech AR-02 running 45C with fan at 100% stock speeds. Great overclocking options. Quick tech support response and RMA issue if you need one. Great value for the money. Mine shipped with newest 2.60 bios.

3 out of 5 eggsok for fx 6300 or less

Pros: Lots of nice features. Price. Does the job nicely with 6300.

Cons: This board is garbage for 8320. Barely able to run stock clocks, and board idles itself at low due to overheating VRM's.

Other Thoughts: Gave it three eggs cuz its actually a decent board for anything less than an eight core cpu. To be fair... Wish it was noted in the description that this board would barely run stock clocks for 125w cpu's.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear EQvet,

5 out of 5 eggsGood Motherboard

Pros: 3 PCI 2.0 ports. Fairly cheap and does what it should. I used one of these to build a gaming computer with a FX 6350 processor and a 7870 XFX video card. 8 months later and I've had no problems.

Cons: None so far. This board doesn't SLI/Crossfire the newer cards but that's not an issue for me.

Other Thoughts: Would highly recommend this for budget gamers. You might get a DOA but that's a risk you take with about any motherboard that is under $120 it seems (mine was fine and has been used heavily). Contact ASRock and I'm sure they'll replace it if there's an issue.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent card

Pros: Good layout of the PCIe slots.
Great BIOS.
Excellent range of RAM supported.
Power up button directly on the card.

Cons: Memory slots are a little bit too close to the CPU, might be a problem for huge heat sinks.
