4 out of 5 eggsWorks like you want it to

Pros: Used this in a build for a friend of mine; She bought parts and brought them to me for assembly. She has reported no problems as of now. Installation went smoothly and the board and other components worked almost perfectly (problem with Windows recognizing 4TB drive as a 4TB drive). None of the recent horror stories reared their heads during the testing I did. I didn't mess with the overclocking options in this board as she doesn't need massive performance out of it. Overall, it's a nice board and I would buy it to build another system if I had the budget for it.

Cons: the Xfan didn't seem to work, but side vent case fan blows right onto the heatsink so it's not a major problem

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Thank you for your purchase and review.
The X-Fan will be ON automatically if chipset is reaching certain temperature.
However, it can be set always on at UEFI/BIOS, H/W Monitor, SB Fan 1 setting [Full ON], save and exit.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent 2011 board

Pros: Solid 12-2 power design, quality components, fan for South Bridge, Stability is very good if you set memory to XMP, then work to overclock from that point. This board can do great things, but use Win 8 and you will be fine.

Cons: Skimpy manual, motherboard diagram tiny, Do NOT install Asrock overclocking software......it will cause all sorts of problems. For that matter, do not install any of the fast USB, fast RAM, it is NOT for this board if you are running WIN 7 or 8. These utilities are designed for the XP 32-bit operating system. Many users have made mistake by installing these while running 7 or 8, and they will not do you any good. Do a clean install and install only minimum drivers needed with BIOS 3.30. I can't stress this enough.

Other Thoughts: Many users have reported problems with back USB 3.0 ports and Ti driver. Here is the solution: Go into the Device Manager and locate the Texas Instrument USB 3.0. Open the Properties of this driver, and make sure the Power Management is turned OFF! I can't stress this more strongly (it is ON by default).....while running Win 8, it will shut off the USB 3.0 ports by mistake, thinking you want power saving!, and then your ports do not work anymore! This board has many great features and I recommend installing Win 8, not Win 7, since I also had problems with Win 7 installing correctly. Go with Win 8, (or Win 9) and you will save yourself much trouble. You will not have BSOD or lock-up with Win 8.

2 out of 5 eggsIn Response...

Pros: Just an addendum to my previous review...

Cons: See below.

Other Thoughts: In response to the manufacturer response on my previous review, perhaps ASRock should keep troubleshooting "tips" for its customer support and stop attempting to shift blame to those who bought their products and experienced defects.

I spent a large amount of time troubleshooting any and all issues I had with all of my hardware- which is a fairly extensive list- over the course of 8 months. This included extensive memory tests, driver tests, switching in and out hardware, etc. After a great deal of time invested in carefully troubleshooting issues did I determine that the issue came from the USB chips on the ASRock mobo. How did I figure this out? Well, I looked through crash logs to determine where I should start. Some indications led me to believe that the problem could have come from attached USB devices (IRQ issues in particular). So I tried running the computer with all USB devices unplugged. Doing so eliminated all crash issues. I then tried running with single USB devices plugged in, and regardless of device (I tried about 10 devices on all USB ports) I got crashes. Not wanting to spend more time/money on the issue for a period, I reattached my devices and ran the computer with occasional BSODs for a month or two after this. Then, the computer would only crash with USB devices attached, and BIOS would freeze anytime I attempted to take a look at USB hardware. After that, I just got a replacement mobo and transferred all of my existing hardware to it. I have thus far not had any issues after running it for several weeks, including driver verifier and load testing.

Why did I not bother trying to replace my mobo under warranty for the second time? Well, I first and foremost do not trust this motherboard after having two failures with it. Second, I do not want to deal with trying to get a replacement for it. While ASRock was not terrible to deal with in getting a new one sent the first time around, I do not want to waste my time doing that every year or so. We will see how well my new motherboard from another manufacturer does (it is not appropriate to mention competing products in a review) but when buying high end workstation equipment I expect it to work 24/7, 365 for years at a time and with whatever other equipment I can attach to it, up to the spec limits in standards such as USB.

In any event, ASRock should not be going onto a review site and second guessing reviewers in an ill guided attempt to dodge blame- presenting issues that would perhaps vindicate its own defective hardware. If you wish to simply offer an apology and customer service number for RMA, that is fine. But Newegg reviews is not an appropriate forum for troubleshooting.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
As always, we glad to replacing the mainboard if the mainboard is malfunctioned.

2 out of 5 eggsHad High Hopes

Pros: When it was working, it did everything I needed it to and at a nice price.

Cons: I had several issues with this mobo. The first one I had would not accept 8 dimms of memory without crashing. I sent it in to ASRock, which gave me a new one at no cost. That one did not have any issues with the memory. For a while, it worked fine, even with a pretty hefty load of hardware including 4xSSD on a PCIe RAID card, decent AMD graphics (running 5 monitors), 3 internal HDDs, 2 external HDDs on USB, external Soundblaster on USB, PreSonus Firepod on firewire, assortment of other peripherals common on workstations. I think maybe this was too much for the motherboard, as today both of its USB controllers- including its USB 3.0 one- are not working. I used this setup for about 1.5 years, but have been getting lots of BSODs for the last 6-8 months, which took forever to isolate as a USB issue. I give 2 eggs because it lasted so long and I ran it pretty hard, but I would expect more in a workstation socket mobo.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the BSOD, Please test with single memory module.
Test with another memory if problem still persist.
Check the power supply is providing enough power to the system.

5 out of 5 eggs3 Boards, all good!

Pros: - Easy overclock settings
- Board layout and design
- Reliable no issues

Cons: - Some unnecessary software you don't need to install that all manufacturer likes to include

Other Thoughts: Own 3 of these boards. Bought 2 boards year and half ago and never had an issue. The only issue I had with the older boards was that the bios was out to date and when I upgraded from sandy-bridge E to ivy-bridge E cpu it wouldn't post and I couldn't figure out why. Reviewed bios release notes and quick bios update and it booted just fine afterwards. The old boards have been running 24/7 no issues and no restarts.

Able to overclock i7-4820k to 4.8ghz with not much increase on the voltage. Currently running 3 i7-4820k on these boards at 4.4ghz on stock settings and voltage. Also running 64GB of ram on these boards no problem at 1600.

1 out of 5 eggsdead after two months

Pros: Put in a system lightly used for about two months. Past two months this board failed giving hardware errors (see cons below).
I run Intel Fortran, ifort, and started to see strange results. It was hard to diagnose and point to the hardware causing the error. I swapped CPU and still get the same error.
I set the kernel in debug mode to find out the errors showing by the hardware.
Swapping the board with another of the same resolved the problem.

Cons: [Hardware Error]: MC2_STATUS[-|CE|-|-|AddrV]: 0x940000000000017a
[Hardware Error]: Bus Unit Error: EV error during data copyback.
[Hardware Error]: cache level: L2, tx: GEN, mem-tx: EV

Other Thoughts: The error shown above can be manifested on any system, but it is hidden, and certainly will not show up with Windows OS.
I suggest running prime to test the board while checking the result of each run.

RMA with ASRock can be a nightmare unless you have a dedicated secretary to follow up on the case. I get none, hence I threw this board in the garbage.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard to check if its resolved.
Download and update the latest BIOS at link " http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X79%20Extreme6/?cat=Download&os=BIOS "
Test with single memory on A1 slot, switching another memory if problem still persist.
Set the UEFI/BIOS default.

5 out of 5 eggsASRock X79 Extreme6 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: solid motherboard that ive been using for over a year plus now. the GUI for the bios is pretty easy to follow and understand and updating the bios for it isn't to difficult either.

Cons: when installing you have to be careful on where to plug the hard drive into as it will work in any slots but some are geared for extra USB slots and it takes the system a tad longer to boot up. tho that's labeled just something to be cautious of.

3 out of 5 eggsUnfortunare

Pros: Onboard fan is not just some gimmicky thing. I worried it would have a shrill noise or essentially do nothing. It's relatively quiet and keeps the chipset cooler than the mb it replaced which just had passive heatsinks. This was a mAtx build so overall cool temps were important to me in the tight space. I hate to say it, but this was the only real pro.

Cons: Very unstable. Esata doesn't work at all. The software bundled causes bsod as other reviewers have mentioned. Fails to boot after working for a week to a month like clockwork. I've tried reinstalling win7, win8. Used two different ssd's and a mechanical hard drive. I've basically swapped in and out every piece of hardware I have laying around. This motherboard is just unstable and it's a shame because it looks great and had all the features I wanted...it's just that none of them work consitantly at all.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the eSATA, please check if the eSATA drive comes with its own power adapter due to port does not providing power like USB ports.
Test with another eSATA drive.
For the fail to boot issue, please connect the main Windows drive to SATA3_0 port.
Check mainboard has detected the drive at UEFI BIOS, Advanced, Storage Configuration.

1 out of 5 eggsGood features for price...

Pros: Great features considering the lower cost of the board compared to others.

Cons: board worked fine for a week. Then one day I booted it up from sleep to find that my usb wifi adapter wasnt being recognized. i had it plugged into one of the usb 3.0 ports. I tried it in a different port and had the same issue, then I tried it in a 2.0 port and it worked again. None of the usb 3.0 ports worked.
Tried re-installing drivers to no effect. 3.0 ports are fried.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the issue, please turn the power off.
Clear the CMOS.
Set the UEFI BIOS default.
Download and install the both Ti and ASMedia USB 3.0 driver at link below.
