  • newegg HDMI-In Tired of constantly switching devices to connect to your monitor? From now on just connect the monitor to your motherboard, and connect your secondary device to the motherboard's HDMI-In port. Users can conveniently toggle between the computer's screen and the secondary device's screen with a hotkey, or even use the secondary device without powering on the computer.
  • newegg Waterproof by Conformal Coating Conductive liquids, such as water, pretty much destroy all kinds of electronics on contact. That's why ASRock has implemented a special layer of Conformal Coating on their motherboards; this makes the motherboards invulnerable to conductive liquids, corrosion and dust. Users won't have to worry about spilling liquid nitrogen, liquid helium or even clam chowder over their motherboards while overclocking.

2 out of 5 eggsAwesome Board for 5 Months

Pros: Good feature/port set, seemingly high quality, looks nice, good layout for my case, 32GB RAM support, and NO LEGACY PCI SLOTS! Four PCIE slots on a matx board! Seriously, who wants PCI slots on their boards anymore? Oh, and price!

Cons: Simply stopped powering on one day after it had been turned off for 30 seconds. I had zero trouble out of this board and really liked it until I accidentally hit shut down instead of restart after some windows updates (no driver updates, not that it should matter).
After that it would not power back on, even completely stripped of all other components. I also tried different RAM, reseated the CPU, hooked up another PSU, and tried a spare power switch. The USB ports still get power and charge devices, but that is all it does!

All the cloud stuff they advertise is a total mess. I assumed it wouldn't be great, but figured ASRock would actually provide some more functional centralized software for it of their own, rather than making you use 10 different pieces of software to try to take advantage of all the advertised features. I said forget it after 30 minutes and had a VPN tunnel on my Cisco 1841 up in the same amount of time.

Other Thoughts: I am a server admin and can say 100% this is a defective board. It was hooked into a high end UPS and was definitely not caused by a surge. This is my primary rig at home, so I don't have time to get it replaced under warranty and immediately bought a new board. For some reason I decided to gamble on ASRock again and bought the Z97 version of this board. I hope that one lasts more than a few months, but I am not going to be happy if the warranty process does not go smoothly as I want to get the bad one fixed so I can have a backup incase this is common with ASRock boards (This is the first time I have used one of their products).

I really hope one of their reps takes the time to respond to this review or I will be done with them. In fact, rather than having my old board replaced. I'd rather have a refund for even half its original price or some credit towards one of their mini-ITX PC's, but I'll probably be lucky to not have to pay $40 in shipping just to get someone else's repaired junk.

1 out of 5 eggsSystemic failures

Pros: Very good motherboard when it works. Lots of neat BIOS features and accessible slots

Cons: System began failing after 6 months, before finally getting replaced. Started when some of the SATA slots stopped being read. Next a paid of USB ports went out. Final straw was when the Ethernet port failed. Tried all the troubleshooting I could, up to and including flashing the bios, but to no avail. Seems like this motherboard is great if you get a reliable one, but a subset seem to fail pretty regularly in the first year. Unfortunately, the warantee only covers the first 30 days- after that you are at the mercy of the seller.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please turn the power off, clear the CMOS.
Set the UEFI/BIOS default.
Test USB ports under BIOS with keyboard and mouse.
Check the LAN LED lights are on when plugged the cable.

1 out of 5 eggsOnly lasted 9 months

Pros: Nice feature set

Cons: Dead at 9 months. Was used on a lightly duty HTPC build. I have 10 year old PCs still performing well. This is by far and away the worst reliability I have experienced on over 50 mobos. I guess the poor warranty coverage should have been a giveaway. No more Asrocks for me. Caveat emptor.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the mainboard has malfunctioned after 9 months which’s due to nature of electronic product, it can happen.

5 out of 5 eggsreally great

Pros: alot of options, ram can take 32 gig, i got 8 gig corsair vegenance ram 1600 mgh overclocked to 1866 mgh, got 3570k clocked from 3.4 running 4.3 gig, alot of usb 3.0's, just like all the options. no problems at all. i buy alot on here as with any electronics, you get bad with any with as many as they build.

Cons: none that i know of, this board id great.

Other Thoughts: i upgraded from a socket 1366 with a i7 930 2.8 gig ran overclocked to 4.1 with huge water cooling ran for 3 years no trouble, and this i think gonna be just as good, just need to get water cooling for more overclock. i have used asrock several times never had problem with them

5 out of 5 eggsFast & Stable

Pros: This is my 4th build with ASRock Extreme 4 boards of this and prior generations. I have been impressed with the boards features, ease of setup, stable operation, and very fast boot times. On all 4 builds, the UEFI selectable 4.0 Ghz OC was very stable with no additional tuning using Intel i5 K (OC) processors. There are higher selectable OC speeds available but I have had no need to use them.
I am almost accustomed to the UEFI, which is pretty easy to use, but I still miss some of the flexibility of the older BIOS. This board has just about everything I wanted in a motherboard.

Cons: Although the board has an eSata connector on the rear panel, I would like an eSata header on the board that could be connected to the eSata port on the front of my case.

Other Thoughts: A firewire header would also have been nice to have but this interface has been mostly replaced by USB 3 and eSata connectors and PCI boards are available cheaply to add this feature.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away if you like audio

Pros: Nice led screen on it to help diagnosis boot problems
Good looking BIOS
No problems besides audio

Cons: My sound failed and started crackling within 1 month of owning it. I tried everything to fix it, new drivers, driver updates, and clearing the bios and trying other audio ports and ssds. I could've RMA'd it but I thought I wouldn't need the audio ports because I use usb headphones and I didn't want to redo my computer. But now that I need it for my headphones and speakers I am wishing I didn't buy this broken motherboard.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

4 out of 5 eggsGood board for the price

Pros: Good board, easy install, bios is easy to work with and works well with my SSD and 320 gb standard SATA drive. I have had the board for 2 months with no issues. Next week I will add a 3rd monitor to the setup and see how it handles a multi-mode monitor arrangement.

Cons: The AsRock rebate time frame is terrible. If a rebate offer is a major factor in your budget -- get something else!

Other Thoughts: I needed to add a USB 2.0 card to connect all of the stuff this build was running. Card was cheap but it would have better if I had ordered the card with the rest of the parts. All of my USB equipment is self power so I have not tested the current capacity of the on-board USB buses.

4 out of 5 eggsMy First Mobo

Pros: Has everything you would need and expect. Great SSD transfer rate and even better sound quality. I used the onboard HDMI for a little while and It worked great. The board seems flawless.

Cons: USB 2.0 front connectors did not seem to work, this however could be user error. Unfortunatly my time with this board has ended. Be very careful when placing your heatsync. I tried to install an all in one cpu liquid cooler and ended up with a broken cpu slot. CPU pins stayed fine but the board will not power on, after removing the heat sync we noticed a slight humming sound comming from the cpu slot. So now ill need to update to the new Z97 :D

Other Thoughts: All and all, my first build couldnt have gone better. Instalation and bios are ezpz to use. Didnt even have to tell it what drive to boot from.

1 out of 5 eggsNever ASRock again

Pros: NON

Cons: The board does not work properly and the customer service sucks.
Problem: Blues screen, system freezing and crashing, USB ports problems.

I have kept the board for almost 2 months after the purchase trying to eliminate the problem. During the process I swapped all the components around the motherboard.
Finally I contacted technical support and they responded promptly. They also decided that I need a motherboard replacement.
I sent the board for a replacement almost a month ago and still did not get an answer from customer service.
