2 out of 5 eggsTerrible USB 3.0

Pros: Lots of features.
5 fan headers
6 sata ports
sli ready
The software for the motherboard is pretty good. But I wish the Asrock A-Tuning software could load minimized at boot.

Cons: If you buy this board - pretend it does not have any USB 3.0 at all, then you will be happy. Fan control through third party tools such as speedfan do not work very well. Speedfan can not even see the rpm of the cpu fan - just reports 0.

The USB 3.0 is unacceptable on this board. If I plug in a USB 3.0 device/hub it will constantly disconnect-reconnect-disconnect-reconnect indefinitely. I did not have this problem on my previous AMD board with the same usb 3.0 devices. It does this in both windows and linux. It does this on both motherboards I have tried (tried 2 of this model). I have swapped out every single component (vid card, psu, case) and USB 3.0 devices still constantly disconnect/reconnect. The only things I did not change is the i5 4670k and 16gb ram I am using. So the only possible conclusion is a design flaw in this motherboard's USB 3.0 implementation. I am amazed they were able to sell all these boards without a recall. Shame on you Asrock. First Asrock board I have tried and last Asrock component I will ever buy. I have learned my lesson to test everything before the 30 day return window is up.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame I have missed the return window as It took me longer than 30 days to thoroughly test all possible combinations to determine without a doubt that the motherboard is at fault here. I will need to install a usb 3.0 pci express card to be able to use usb 3.0 devices with this setup.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please check that problem occurs at front or rear I/O USB 3.0 ports.
If front USB 3.0 , please check the chassis connector causing.
Test with another USB devices ( 2.0 or 3.0) to check if the symptom still occurs.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't POST

Pros: Looks nice, and the IO is my ideal setup.

Cons: I can't get the machine to even load the bios. I've reworked all the ram, single slot different dimms. Rebuilt the machine 2 times now and have verified all other parts on different mobo.

I'm clearing the cmos one last time but i've never stuggled so hard with a mobo in the last 20 years.

Other Thoughts: The manual might as well not exist since there is no useful info other than how to seat the CPU which i guess is good for first time builders.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please check the BIOS version is 1.90 (sticker on BIOS chip) if using CPU is Haswell-R.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a motherboard with features. Almost legacy free. Just need to get rid of those pesky VGA and PS/2 ports.

Cons: Gigabit ethernet doesn't work with Windows Server OS's.... At least not without a small hack to the inf file. Not ASRocks fault but Intel's so avoid that chip if you want a seamless Windows Server experience. Crazy why they won't support it because of a missing feature or two. Works just fine after the hack.

This board has died just over a month in. No power at all. All other components check out fine leaving the motherboard as the culprit. Just outside Newegg's return policy of course. I took a chance with AS Rock and got burned so back to ASUS I go.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Due to this is desktop mainboard, not fully support for server platform. However, we do have server boards at " http://www.asrockrack.com " .

3 out of 5 eggsMissing I/O Shield

Pros: Nothing really to comment on here yet.

Cons: I haven't had it enough to give a fair review so I'm going over my biggest issue. All of the items, except for the motherboard, that should come with it were missing. No I/O shield, no SATA cables..., so my desktop has the motherboard there without any shielding allowing dust to come in. Since I didn't really have a lot of time to really review it, I'm taking off 2 stars for what I hope was just a bad batch.

Other Thoughts: Wasn't really a con given that I can probably figure it out eventually, the ram I bought with it is being underclocked to 1033 MHz instead of the 2100 MHz it came in.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kevin,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Mainboard should come with accessories unless mainboard was purchased as open box item which refer to Newegg open box policy.
Please contact us at " user@asrockamerica.com ". We will assist you shortly.

3 out of 5 eggsNIC doesn't play nice with server OSes

Pros: Plenty of SATA connections, upgraded DSP for sound. All around, a solid motherboard. Used in a low power HTPC build.

Cons: The NIC - an Intel I217V. Intel, in its infinite wisdom, has decided not to provide drivers for server O/Ss for this NIC.

Shouldn't have been a problem for me, as the HTPC build runs W7 - but I also run a home server for a NAS and a backup solution, and as this NIC doesn't play nicely with server O/Ss, it won't play nicely with the WHS recovery disk - there are no server drivers for the board, so no way to access the network and do a restore.

I had to buy a cheap gigabit add-on card because of this to ensure I can restore the machine to a backup image if needed. This functionality is IMPERATIVE on a DVR build, as tuners can frequently get messed up by add on codecs or software, and rollbacks to a prior image are much easier than time consuming troubleshooting.

Intels nonsense is not ASRocks fault, but as ASRock chose to use this NIC on the board instead of another solution with better driver support - the loss of 1 egg is warranted for this, and it started out 1 egg down as it is not a top of the line board to begin with.

Other Thoughts: Find a board with a different integrated NIC if you'll be running a server O/S or will be running a desktop O/S but using a WHS V1, WHS V2, SBS, or Essentials based server backup and recovery solution.

In fact, as much as I like the board OTHER than the NIC issues, I'd recommend looking elsewhere regardless of your O/S. The NICs lack of driver support for server O/Ses is simply unforgivable in my book. Again, not ASRocks fault, but ASRock decided to use this NIC..

3 out of 5 eggsOdd problems, but works very well.

Pros: Very nice price and it looks great. Full featured.

Cons: About a month after purchase, all of my USB devices stopped working. I tried dozens of fixes, but all signs pointed to a dead mother board. However, for some reason, switching off some Intel USB settings in the bios fixed it and my USB devices started working again. I installed no new drivers or firmware that could have caused this abrupt change, the motherboard seemed to do it on its own.

The BIOS user interface is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. It is 1997-era website ugly. Maybe worse. You are a company that makes millions of dollars a year, spending a fraction of that on hiring a user interface designer to overhaul that would elevate your boards.

Other Thoughts: I lowered the score because of the odd experience that took me a while to resolve and caused me stress.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: This is my first time using an ASRock mobo. I have used mainly Asus boards in the past. This mobo is very solid I haven't had any issues with it. Booted right up and memory was set to 2400mhz without any tweaking.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Impressed with ASRock quality! Will use them again!

4 out of 5 eggsOne issue with Server 2008 R2

Pros: So far it seems stable, have good onboard connectors, 4 RAM DIMM's, 4 PCI-Express slots, and 6 SATA 3 ports, and a large amount of USB3 ports on the back

Cons: the HD Audio pin connector is in a weird place, and I cannot neatly hide the cable, it has to run straight across my motherboard (Antec Minuet 350 case)
The onboard Intel NIC, will NOT install in Server 2008 R2, I have tried the package on the ASRock website along with the install package from Intel's website without any luck. I am having to use an Intel Gigabit CT Desktop adapter instead. I have tried pointing the onboard to use the network drivers inside the install package to attempt to do it manually, however with no success. I hope ASRock or Intel has a solution to this. The NIC is one reason why I purchased this motherboard (Realtek is terrible)

Other Thoughts: I haven't tried overclocking it yet, it turns out you need the full 8 pin EPS 12v connector to overclock or use Intel's Turbo Boost technology (on my 4670k), my small 350w PSU only has the 4pin connector so I have to purchase an adapter.
I did a motherboard swap from an ASRock H77m board (and Pentium G620) to this, Windows pretty much figured everything out by itself in regards to drivers installs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Snipergod87,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Due to Intel® I217V LAN chipset limitation, the drivers for server OS are not supported.

1 out of 5 eggsBe wary of this product

Pros: Looks to have great features, though I never got to try them out.

Cons: I recieved this motherboard with bent pins in the CPU socket as well as a missing screw in the CPU bracket. Upon RMA with newegg, I was told they could not replace it due to "apparent end-user damage". A quick check of ASRock's RMA policy shows that they, too, do not replace boards with physical damage either. What a waste of my money for an item no one will let me return because of bent pins that I didn't even cause...

Other Thoughts: I've bought from Newegg for quite some time and this is the first problem I've ever had with them. I'd hoped for better support than this when the time came.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks pretty. Impressive features.

Cons: Two eggs for support. An audio issue developed after NewEgg's 30 day RMA window. Attempted to contact Asrock for RMA, I have yet to hear back from them.

Feedback/short/loud popping sound starting coming through speaker during bootup and shutdown of the pc. Updated BIOS, drivers, and test three different speakers sets. Still had same issue.

Other Thoughts: Ended up purchasing MSI Z87M-G43. Everything worked with it, no audio issues.

PC Build:
I7-4771
G.Skill Model F3-1866C10D-16GAB
Seagate 600 SSD 240 GB
Seasonic SS-660XP2 Power Supply
