1 out of 5 eggsGood and Bad

Pros: All features included, mSata Wifi 5Ghz 867Mbps low power consumption with 256MB dedicated GPU + shared video memory.
Which is not bad for a gaming PC.

Cons: I am so proud of ASRock has a well designed of this board but bad luck for me (maybe) i got the defective board. I recently ordered this board from Newegg 2 weeks ago but didn't have time to put it together. Well, finally i got it up and running 2 days ago everything gone well after OS and drivers installed correctly, ect.. Like i usually do a "burn in" overnight. Wake up in the morning still see it running (which is good) i was happy and shut it down then go to work. I got work off (after 8hrs) and try to enjoy my new mini itx pc, i turned it on it seems to work fine then suddently reboot (no reason) while i am doing research and email (not even play game). I logged back on again and tried to finish what i was doing, the computer shut down period. (Weird), i tried to turn it back on it won't turn on, try to remove RAM, test difference PSU...ect... it just dead ... i am very upset because it was fine 2 days ago, the performance is so good and i was happy with it. I still don't know what causing it or maybe i was bad luck with a defective board. I have to contact Newegg to request RMA, but i still want this board so i chose to replace. Hopefully, i won't be disappoint it after replacement, otherwise i have to say "GoodBye" to ASRock.

Other Thoughts: Well, i don't know. Defective Mobo what can i say. The board has a well designed I won't complaint. But compare to Asus, i never had a problem just because Asus don't have mSata like it supposed to be. I still want this ASRock board, i just hope the replacement one will be more stable. I should not upgrade the latest bios but i don't think BETA bios would kill the mobo. Please advice.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, Affordable.

Pros: Full featured, mSATA port, AC wi-fi.

Cons: Wi-fi card is eh.

Other Thoughts: Bought this because it seemed like the best bang for the buck. I was a little bit worried, because a lot of reviewers had issues right out of the box, but none here. Plugged everything in, mounted it inside my case, and it booted on the first shot. The main reason I picked this board over anything else was the mSATA connector on the back of the board. I did have to change settings in the BIOS to get it to boot to the SSD first, but once I did that it booted and recognized my HDD with no issues. The BIOS seems pretty good, I had an ASUS board in my last build, but all of their z87 ITX boards were just too expensive, so transitioning was not an issue. I haven't used any of the overclocking features, because there is no need for my uses, but nice to have. No real complaints about the layout either, it worked just fine in my case.

My only complaint is that either the card or the provided antenna is not amazing. My old ASUS PC-10 card got better reception in the exact same place. Not sure if it's just my board, or what.

4 out of 5 eggsA good Mini-ITX choice

Pros: Not many mini-ITX Z87 come with mSATA
Feature-rich and definitely worth the price.

Cons: The only thing that constantly bugs me is the USB issue. Sometimes my keyboard and mouse freeze upon boot and I'd be stuck at the Windows 7 login screen. I couldn't find a way to reproduce or fix the issue. It comes randomly and goes away randomly (after angrily reboot numerous times). I updated to the new BIOS with USB compatibility patch, but no help.
The other thing is that some USB device/driver is constantly consuming CPU cycle. I would always see about 50% utilization on one core of my 4670K. This issues goes away if I put the computer to sleep and then wake it up. Again, I don't know why and I don't know how to fix it. The system would consume about 10W less power without this issue.
I'm not 100% percent sure it's a motherboard problem. It could very well be software, but still annoying nonetheless. I run multiple computers, all with very similar software setup (Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and pretty much the same set of applications), but only ASRock gives me this problem.

Other Thoughts: Other than the USB issue it's a very good board and I'm pretty happy with it. It's good that ASRock has become much more active in recent years.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the USB keyboard and mouse issue, please set the UEFI BIOS default.
Plug keyboard and mouse to USB 2.0 ports (grey).

4 out of 5 eggsOk MB

Pros: Good placement of connectors when installed in a Streacom F7C case except with a nanoPSU that makes things a bit tight. Good MB for a InWin BP671 case. Overall the motherboard works ok in a HTPC build

Cons: No Bluetooth support under linux as of 5/2014. HDMI Video out causes my Toshiba 47" TV to mess up the picture at random times. Turning the TV off and then on is the only way to fix it.

Other Thoughts: The motherboard is working great so far in a Streacom case as a HTPC. I'd buy it again but use it in a InWin BP671 case if I could live without the Bluetooth in linux and the wonky HDMI out that sometimes happens.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst mITX Build

Pros: So far so good, i have a 4770k oc'ed at 4.2ghz cooled by an Enermax Liqtech 240. The UEFI is easily navigable and adjustable. The layout of the board is perfect for my Corsair Obsidian 250D, which allows me to manage the cables and avoid clutter (compared to other mITX boards I've played with).

Cons: The drivers in the disc it came with didn't want to work for whatever reason, so I had to go through the hassle of downloading the LAN driver on another system in order to install it on this one to download the remaining drivers.

Other Thoughts: Just got the board a week ago, so I'll update if necessary.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For future reference, the LAN driver can be download under UEFI BIOS.
To do so, please plugged the LAN cable with internet ready to mainboard.
Plug the USB flash drive to USB 2.0 port (grey).
Enter UEFI BIOS, Tools, Easy Driver Installer to download LAN driver and LiveSetup utility.
Run the LAN driver under Windows to install.

2 out of 5 eggs1st time ASRock disappoints me

Pros: non yet, can't get passed POST.

Cons: We used the Intel RAID BIOS to stripe 5 SSD's and planned to use it as our boot drive. But when we start up the pc, the mobo is stuck at POST, and restarting does not do anything. I have to disconnect all of the hard drives, start up the pc and everything is fine. Connect the SSD's to the ports on the mobo, and we're back to the same problem. This has happened with 2 of 3 motherboards that we purchased from Newegg. Called support at ASRock and no help at all. So now i am stuck with 2 motherboards that i can't use because the tech guy at ASRock told me to use different SSD's, and i can't return them for a refund, which is actually stated on the item's page so im not complaining about not getting a refund, just that we bought the boards and had problems right out of the box and we are stuck with them. What's is more upsetting is that i have always received great customer service from ASRock for years when we came across problems with older mobos. But im going to try getting a hold of them again and hopefully i get a different technician on the phone.

Other Thoughts: I can't really recommend the board to anyone because i haven't really had the chance to play around with it because of the getting stuck at POST. ASRock support rep that i talked to didn't offer any help or advise on my issue, but just told me to get different SSD's. But i won't give up yet. Im going to try ASRock support again and hopefully ill get a different rep and we can take care of the mobos that are just sitting around here.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please connect the drives to SATA3_0, 1, 2 as following for RAID configuration.
Enter to check if connected drives are detected by mainboard at UEFI BIOS, Advanced, Storage Configuration.
However, there’s intermittently detection issue between Intel 8 series chipset and old SandForce controller that may consider using newer SSD drives.
In addition, visit link below for RAID installation guide.

1 out of 5 eggsPlan on sending at least 2 boards back

Pros: awesome features for the price point

Cons: First board was DOA- it would not post
RMA'ed
Second board neither the ethernet port or the wireless functioned, I contacted Asrock to make sure I had the correct drivers and was told to send it back to Newegg for yet another replacement. I need my computer and did not relish another week or so of limbo time before the next replacement arrived. Luckily I had a usb wireless adapter that I could use to get me back online. I'll will be replacing this board as soon as I am able.

Other Thoughts: This is the first Asrock product I have purchased and it will be the last. I should have listened to the negative reviews I read here and headed their warning in regards to the manufacturing quality control.
If you ever get a good board I'm sure they would be amazing, but you need to figure in the cost of multiple return shipping into the total price. You might be better off buying a more reliable board at a higher price.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the second mainboard having onboard LAN and Wi-Fi malfunction.
It’s very rare problem since they are 2 different controllers.
Please update the replacement mainboard's working fine.

1 out of 5 eggsWell, RMA process is finished...

Pros: - Nice features
- Nice price

Cons: - Memory Slot B failed and it took me forever to figure out that was the problem
- RMA process is horrible

Other Thoughts: I'm the Michael M who wrote the earlier review. Memory Slot B was bad and after I figured it out I sent it back to Asrock. I paid for the shipping (expected but aggravating since it essentially drives the cost of the board up). Several weeks later a replacement returns. Here's the rub: the replacement is obviously a refurbished or used one. There are scratches on the metal indicating use, the board doesn't have the same "shiny" look it did when it was new, and to make it worse the metal has those little bumps that show up when metal is old (or maybe it's sitting a long time in humidity that causes it? It's hard to describe). The replacement showed up in a different and used motherboard box that had been folded inside out, and it was just the board. Even the little tab over the CPU slot was used and it was pinned in backwards.

I'm really saddened by this. I get home from Afghanistan after 3.5 years, decide to build a nice computer now that I have Internet again, I review all the parts, pick them out, order them, assemble it, and this problem comes up. Mildly irritating but I've been building computers for a long time and RMAs are bound to happen. No, what really upsets me is that my new board has been replaced by a shoddy looking used one. So you know that joy you get when you build something like this? Well, I don't have it anymore with this computer. I went ahead and bought an Asus which is what I should have done in the first place.

Bottom line: I'm not mad because I had to RMA the board. I'm sad because Asrock sent me back a used, dull and roughed up looking replacement.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate of review from last week

Pros: Got UEFI fan control to work.

Cons: The included wifi/bluetooth card by Broadcom has issues.

Other Thoughts: Just an update to a review I posted last week. I was able to get the fan control to work through UEFI. It seems that by installing the Tuning Utility software, it somehow triggered something that then enabled the UEFI fan control to work. Not sure exactly why or how, but UEFI fan control works now. I guess it might be a little fickle.

Also, I've discovered that the Broadcom wifi/bluetooth mini-PCIe card included with the Z87E-itx causes issues for a lot of people. If you Google it, you will see that people have problems with with both the wifi and bluetooth aspects of the card. I personally have now experienced problems with both wifi and bluetooth.

It's not really a problem with the motherboard, but it's a shame that ASRock included a sub-par wifi/bluetooth card. If you really need wifi/bluetooth, you can just pay $30 or $40 to get one that works better and replace the included one.

Anyways, I'm maintaining my original rating of 4 stars. UEFI fan control working would have gotten me up to 5 stars. But then the discovery of the wifi/bluetooth issues takes me back down to 4.
