5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value - But beware if buying this together with the latest CPUs

Pros: This board is great value for money. I have built numerous systems with it and am very happy with the performance.

Cons: None, but see below

Other Thoughts: Although this board supports all Haswell CPU's some of the later released CPU's (e.g. Core i5 4690) are not supported without a firmware update. The firmware cannot be updated using this CPU, as it will not start up.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Due to the mainboard has been released before Haswell-R processor, the BIOS update is needed to recognizing the new processor.

1 out of 5 eggsAsrock Sucks

Pros: No pros

Cons: The board was the second board product that arrived dead

Other Thoughts: None

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Since this is second mainboard having same issue, please check other components that they are working properly.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
Unplug the ATX power, remove all components from mainboard.
Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box
Clear the CMOS.
Check the mainboard’s CPU socket contact pins are normal (should be pointing same way and pattern)
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan if socket pins are normal
Test with single memory module (non-ECC, un-buffered)
Test with onboard VGA
Plug the 24 pins + 8 or 4 pins ATX power
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again

3 out of 5 eggsGood board for basics

Pros: Plenty of ports, No complaints on ease of use and Bios was simple and easy to manage

Cons: Worked beautifully with my AMD 7950 and i5 4560, but when i upgraded to an asus gtx770 my northbridge continually overheated. Only on CPU intensive games like PS2, but it just so happens that's my current favorite.

Took me about a month to isolate that only the motherboard was having issues. Not sure if it's a one-off issue or not, but i've upgraded to an MSI GD-65 Gaming board with a 4670k and (with nothing else changed) haven't had an issue since.

Other Thoughts: Great while it worked, upgrading my graphics card and turning up video options ended up showing that this board overheats.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

Pros: Decent UEFI setup

Cons: Abysmal quality - one cannot operate in dual channel memory mode and the replacement had bent CPU pins and would not power up! STAY AWAY.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. ASRock mainboards are fully tested to assure the quality.
The CPU socket has been covered with protection CAP to avoid damage the pins.

4 out of 5 eggsGot it working (follow up to customer service review)

Pros: Same as before. Adequate port selection. Easy enough to install everything. For my non-OC, 1 GPU build, it's working just fine right now.

Cons: ASRock's updating of the drivers on their site, which led to my original SATA/SSD issue.

Other Thoughts: Writing this as a follow up to share what I learned with the NewEgg community. I had already done what ASRock suggested in their NewEgg response (flash/update BIOS, try different cables and drives) and said so in my original support email to them, so I knew that wasn't it. After speaking with a very helpful phone rep at Samsung, however (my SSD is a 120GB 840 Evo), I discovered that the cause of my problems was a bad Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver.

The current version on Intel's site is 12.8.XXX (not sure of the exact number beyond that). On ASRock's site, they had 12.6.XXX, a version that was apparently so bad Intel totally removed it from their site. As soon as I updated to 12.8, my SSD started performing brilliantly.

Conclusion: the board works fine. It fills my needs. Just don't trust ASRock to have the latest drivers on their site - go straight to Intel. Giving 4 stars this time so my two reviews average out.

P.S. I think this will apply to any H87 board, and maybe some Zs as well - not sure.

1 out of 5 eggsSignificant Customer Service Disappointment

Pros: Adequate port selection. Easy enough to install everything. For my non-OC, 1 GPU build, I'm expecting it will work just fine.

Cons: Key word: EXPECTING. So far I haven't been able to obtain a stable windows install due to terrible SSD (Samsung 840 EVO 120GB) performance - terribly slow speeds and random drive corruptions to the point of requiring a fresh Windows 8 install. As such, I can't give an adequate assessment of its performance.

Other Thoughts: After a lot of research (including forums that ASRock links to on their site) and installing drivers from ASRock's site with no change in performance, I posted on ASRock's support page with a full explanation of my problem and what I had done, including buying a second SSD (same problems) and testing the SSDs in another computer (worked perfectly). This is, word for word, the response I received:

"Hi,

Sorry about the issue you are having, and your detail troubleshoot. At this point I would suggest you contact the seller for exchange.

If you have any other question. Please feel free to let us know."

SERIOUSLY? Conclusion: Don't expect much, if anything, from ASRock support. YMMV, but buy with caution. I'm still working on getting mine to work - 5 days and counting now.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The SATA3 ports and its controller meet or exceed industry standards.
Please download and update the latest BIOS at link http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS&Model=H87 Pro4
Set the UEFI BIOS default.
Test with another known good SATA cable and SSD drive to check if the symptom still occurs.
As always, we appreciate your purchase and constructive reviews are welcome.

4 out of 5 eggsASRock is Great

Pros: Nice feature fancy mobo, performs as intended and IIRC can OC. Lots of PCI slots and RAM of all you'll ever need.

Cons: The audio jack seems to have no sound after a while. May as well buy a sound card.
