5 out of 5 eggsH87m mobo

Pros: it works great. have not had a single issue with since it arrived and i put together the computer im even using to type this msg.

Cons: video card is hairs width away from cooling radiator. not a problem with the board more an issue with my small case and mounting the radiator on the exhaust. lol

Other Thoughts: not sure why so many people had such a bad experience with the board. either im luck or people are crazy. hahaha either way money well spent.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible

Pros: Great feature set, looks pretty. Comes in good packaging. Plenty of functional outputs and easy to navigate on the layout.

Cons: CHA_FAN1 dead on arrival.

Other Thoughts: Google this: psa 8 series motherboards

Click on the reddit link.

Notice many of these reviews indicate that people can't get POST to be successful and keep in mind that if you use a haswell refresh processor and have an old BIOS rev on this board, it will not work. No video on the VGA output and no beeps from the speaker. ASRock now charges $15 to update the BIOS because you obviously need a CPU to update it. This is pretty much their way to avoid recalling all their units back and now charge people for a service even though they claim all fourth gen processors are compatible. It's a shame they don't make this knowledge more widespread - I think some of the reviews from after the refreshes were released could be related here. Will not be buying ASRock due to their customer service, I was told the other vendors will update the BIOS free of charge once this is notified to them.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear JP Anders,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Due to the mainboard has been released before Haswell-R processor, the BIOS update is needed to recognizing the new processor.

However, we do NOT charge if BIOS version is older than to support Haswell-R.

1 out of 5 eggsWould be a nice board, if it worked

Pros: This is a no frills board for someone looking to put together a basic rig. If you're not looking to OC or do anything fancy, and just want something cheap to tie your components together, this MIGHT be the board for you. This board is nice and small, and seemed to be well put together.

Cons: This board and it's replacement were both DOA. I tried everything I could to get them working (breadboarded and tested with alternate power) but had no luck. The shipping fees on the RMAs were adding up so I went with a different MB instead.

Other Thoughts: I was initially excited for this board, but in the end I could have used the shipping fees for the RMAs to buy a better MB in the first place. Lesson learned. If you do decide to go with this board I hope you have better luck with it than I did.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that both mainboards having same issue (DOA). ASRock mainboards are fully tested to assure the quality.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
Unplug the ATX power, remove all components from mainboard.
Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
Clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan.
Plug the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power.
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again.
Populate the components one by one to POST test, if system get the power.

2 out of 5 eggsSame Memory Issues as everyone else

Pros: Seems like a great board when it works. I build a put together computers for a living and have been using this board for about 6 months in some of the computers. out of 20 or so computers, I've probably had 5-10 boards fail with the same memory issues others have experienced.

Cons: seems to have a high failure rate with the memory channels. I will now avoid this board.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Please trouble shoot the mainboard.
Clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan to assure fully contact with the mainboard.

2 out of 5 eggsCannot get Analog Audio Working

Pros: Other than the audio (see cons) this board has been working well since I started using it. It has a good balance of price and features for a budget build. I paired this with a Pentium G3220 and 8 GB RAM and it makes for a very snappy machine running Windows 7 64 bit.

Cons: I CANNOT get the audio to work on this board and am nearly at the point of RMA'ing it. I have tried everything I know, spending multiple days working on this updating drivers, etc. I cannot get any signal from the onboard Realtek audio - the rear panel connections are ghosted out. After browsing multiple support forums, I have found that there are a LOT of people who have problems with the Realtek onboard audio and a RMA usually fixes this. However, I want to make sure I exhaust my options before going that route. I have tried the audio in Win7 and Linux Mint. No success in either OS. Wish there was a way to test it in BIOS.

Other Thoughts: It would be a decent board if it worked properly... For an extra $20 I could just buy an external sound card, but that kind of defeats the purpose for a cheap board

Manufacturer Response:

Dear NeoMoses,

Sorry to hear that the mainboard audio has malfunctioned.
Please set the UEFI default.
Download and install the audio driver at link " http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H87M/?cat=Download " .
Plug the known good speaker at rear audio output (green).

1 out of 5 eggsnot good

Pros: ASRock boards usually are worry-free.

Cons: Not much to say about this board, I think ASRocks QA department fell asleep on this one...

Other Thoughts: Purchased this motherboard only to find that the PC wouldn't post. spent many hours troubleshooting, then RMA'd for another one, which didn't post either!

Although Im pretty good at troubleshooting, what are the odds of 2 dead boards?? spent more time troubleshooting, then RMA'd the 2nd board and bought a competitor board which works great. All-in-all, I spent 2 1/2 weeks, plus 20.00 to ship the boards back to newegg..would not recommend this product from ASRock

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the second mainboard having same issue (post). All mainboards are fully tested to assure the quality. Unfortunately, due to nature of electronic product, it can happen.

Reseat the CPU with heatsink fan as well if socket pins are normal
Test with single memory module (non-ECC, un-buffered)
Plug monitor to onboard VGA
Plug the 24 pins + 8 or 4 pins ATX power
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again

2 out of 5 eggs?? ASRock QC ??

Pros: Great features for the price.

Cons: Ordered 3 of these for a few company builds. The first build works great. Build 2 and 3, both boards have a defective Dimm slot - same slot on each. Fortunately Newegg is great with returns. ASRock however needs better quality control. Haven't had issues in the past, but was hoping to have all systems up today, now I wait.........

Manufacturer Response:

Dear LMPC,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the issue, please clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and cooler.
Test with single memory module, switching another memory if problem still persist.

1 out of 5 eggs2 bad boards

Pros: None

Cons: Issues with 2 boards: Board 1 memory channel A was bad (gave an error if any memory was installed). Board 2 wouldn't post. I sent a tech request email to ASRock, and they said to "contact your dealer". NewEgg took care of me fortunately. I've had great luck with motherboards from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and Intel. Going to pass on all ASRock in the future.

Other Thoughts: The board only has 1 - 4 pin chassis fan header. If you use pwm case fans this may not be enough.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear the second mainboard having post problem.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard with known good components;
Unplug the ATX power.
Remove the mainboard from chassis, place the mainboard on mainboard’s box
Clear the CMOS
Check the mainboard’s CPU socket pins are normal (should be pointing same way and pattern)
Reseat the CPU with heatsink fan as well if socket pins are normal
Test with single memory module (non-ECC, un-buffered)
Plug monitor to onboard VGA
Plug the 24 pins + 8 or 4 pins ATX power
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard's system panel power header, and try again

5 out of 5 eggsNice value motherboard for a Haswell build!

Pros: A lot of features for a "value" board: multichannel audio for those into that sort of thing, nice gui for the UEFI setup, HDMI, DVI, and VGA. Very fast POST (and I have fast boot disabled... go figure). The ability to update BIOS via internet w/o having to mess with USB memory sticks or the old, dreadful floppy disk.

Cons: With this being a value board, only 2 slots for memory instead of 4. And SATA ports aren't on the edge like on higher end motherboards.

Other Thoughts: This board is a replacement for an almost 8 year old (!!!) Foxconn socket 754 SiS chipset mobo that I bought for my mother. The old one started having issues with USB and was just too slow for demanding tasks like video capture and editing. She wanted windows 7 (reeled in terror when she saw Win8) so I pieced a new system around this board. So far, no issues. I'm sure she is going to enjoy it, especailly when it comes to capturing and editing video.
