General information

High Density Glass Fabric PCB

What you’ve never understood about your computer is that it is scared to death of water, H2O, humidity or whatever you’d like to name it. And even though you do not see the water, actually there may be lots of excessive moist in the air killing your motherboard silently and slowly. No, your motherboard doesn’t melt when in contact with water like the wicked witch of the west, but it dies of short circuit. Luckily, ASRock has a new High Density Glass Fabric PCB design that reduces the gaps between the PCB layers to protect the motherboard against electrical shorts caused by humidity.

General information

All Solid Capacitor Design

ASRock is determined to use high quality materials to build the best motherboards, that's why all the capacitors on this motherboard are built with 100% solid capacitors. These solid capacitors bring long lasting durability and ultra stable performance.

4 out of 5 eggsnice price, ok mobo

Pros: Great price and easy to work with the clear instruction set.

Cons: The only issue I had was installing the stock drivers. My build has no CD ROM so I tried to use the internet flast from BIOS which I could not get to work. Easy work around was to use another computer with CD to load drivers on USB and transfer that way.

Other Thoughts: I paired this with an i3 4330 and have had a great deal of issue with the HD4600 graphics. The ONLY driver that works is the stock one from mobo manufacturer. The windows update driver causes a bios screen loop. Only two molex fan connectors, so get a splitter if you are running two case fans and proc fan

*Edit 4/9/16
I ended up swapping the proc over to an i5 and use a dedicated video card which did away with the need for this boards troublesome onboard graphics. It has been a stable and reliable board aside from one continuing issue. If you allow this board to sleep instead of just powering down, it will go through a "triple restart" sequence before actually coming back to the desktop. Cold start boot time is a few seconds, so I just changed the power options a bit and avoid that issue as well.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little board

Pros: Affordable
Solid caps
Fast boot times

Cons: None that I can find, this board meets all my expectations

Other Thoughts: I decided to move my Haswell build from a mid-tower to a mini-ITX form factor and wanted a B85 chipset to make the swap and Windows 10 re-activation easier, and this board fit the bill. The first thing I noticed was how fast the computer booted when I first fired it up, I didn't realize how much my old ATX Gigabyte board was holding me back on my last build. So far everything is working as it should and I have no complaints.

5 out of 5 eggsUnintended Steam Machine

Pros: -Stable
-Has most of the features an end user will need for a home PC or home server

Cons: - locked board
- no hardware RAID or overclocking features

Other Thoughts: Originally purchased this board for a low-end server/NAS and paired with with a cheap Celeron processor. My current build is:

Intel Core i7 4790k
G.Skill TridentX 1600 CL7
EVGA GTX 980 Classified
Samsung EVO 850
Seagate 1TB 2.5" SSHD
All in a Silverstone ML08B-H Milo Case

Performance does not suffer, but there is no overclocking features. Knowing that I should've used the i7-4790S, due to the lower TDP and less thermal throttling in the small form factor. Also, RAM is limited to 1600, so I went with the lowest Cas Latency I could find for a reasonable price (and also the G.Skill TridentX looks great). Considering, I originally purchased this board with a Celeron G1820 and 8GB of DDR3/1333 RAM, it's doing well in its new life. Comparing it to my Z97, I'd say performance is the same as stock speeds without any determent. If you're building a gaming rig, from scratch, in a small form factor you could save yourself some money by getting this board and an i7-4770S, i7-4790S, or 65 watt i5. You could try for the i7-4790T as well, but those chips are hard to find and expensive. I'd also highly recommend the duel-core Celerons with this board for home servers, HTPC, and low end gaming PCs. They tend to be very cheap, and offer a path to upgrade later on.

In conclusion, I have no problem recommending this board if you're using a Fractal Node 202, SilverStone Milo ML08, or Raven RVZ02. The CPU coolers, even the aftermarket ones, will only allow limited overclocking, and throttling will be an issue. I'd still recommend using a Noctua or Silverstone low profile cooler over stock, but use this board over a Z97 (unless you can afford both), and budget for a more expensive video card.

3 out of 5 eggsSolid board for the price

Pros: - Overall, is a good board that runs well as my media PC. Paired with a Core i3-4770, 2x8gb ram and a SSD.
- Quick
- Front USB 3.0

Cons: - Not sure why it would only have 2 USB 3.0 in the back but have 4 USB 2.0, if anything it should be the other way around
- Not sure if it's a problem with the board or my case, though I'm pretty sure it's the board, when I plug 2 different devices in the front hub USB 3.0, one of the ports won't work. Of the 2 available front ports I have, both work when they are the only one in use but if both are in use, 1 of the ports won't work. In my case, it was a USB 3.0 flash drive and a Logitech USB receiver for wireless mouse/keyboard and the Logitech peripheral will also fail to work if the flash drive is plugged in, regardless of which of the 2 USB 3.0 front port I use.

Other Thoughts: - Overall, it's solid for a small build. Was able to get this on sale ($55) and pair it with Core i3-4770 ($80) so not bad for the price.

2 out of 5 eggsNot so great

Pros: When it works, it does work well, and as advertised.

Cons: Lasted about a week, looks like maybe corrupt BIOS. Bizarre behavior, all testing points to motherboard. After first sign of failure, board ended up in an unusable state, strange graphical corruption in UEFI, no combinations of hardware alleviated the issue, and everything used was triple tested on other machines with no faults.

Other Thoughts: There is little more stressful than new component failure. I would recommend a different chipset, I have used Asrock hardware in the past with success, so this may be an exception.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Alexander,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard step below to check if its resolved.

4 out of 5 eggsOC not supported on G3258 with new BIOS

Pros: -mini itx
-4 sata 3

I recommend this board if your doing a build that has a celeron, Pentium, i3, or i5

Cons: -no plastic on the I/O sheild, all metal
-You have to downgrade the bios to 2.30 to have overclocking options on the g3258
-Slow Internet downloads

Other Thoughts: My Rig:

Intel Pentium G3258 @4.3 GHz
8gb G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1400 (My CPU limits it to 1333, but I used XMP)
Intel stock cooler
Dell vostro 260 case
Mushkin chronos 480gb SSD
Corsair CX430m PSU

5 out of 5 eggsGood amout of features for the price.

Pros: VGA, DVI and HDMI out. Optical digital audio out. Front panel USB 3.0

Cons: I can't find a case speaker output. It Shipped with BIOS 2.40 that oddly will allow Vcore up to 2 volts but has no multiplayer adjustment for my G3258.

Other Thoughts: I installed Windows 7 and flashed it to 2.30. I then overclocked my G3258 to 4.4 ghz with little more than a few clicks in the BIOS. Most everything still on auto. I noticed the Vcore is over 1.4v but it runs cool enough with the stock HSF. I spent most of a day updating Windows 7 and upgrading to Windows 10. It was working fine running Windows 10 overclocked. It went pretty smooth but took too long. I had absolutely no issues with the alleged Intel/MS sabotage of non Z overclocking until the next morning when I woke it up out of sleep and it was running 3.2 ghz again? I renamed mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll, rebooted and it ran 4.4 ghz again. I bumped the multiplier up to 46 in Windows and it seems stable. 47 got a BSOD.

I have a Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3L 1600 running DDR3 at 1400 8-8-8-26

5 out of 5 eggsGreat ITX board!

Pros: Great board for small desktop builds, firewalls, media center pcs, linux rigs. Paired with a SSD and a Celeron board performs great. I use ASRock most of the time and never had a single issue.

Cons: No onboard Intel NICs

Other Thoughts: This time shipping was super slow. Ordered on Thu, received it the next Wed. 6 days from Indianapolis to Chicago. Come on Fedex.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Properly

Pros: Running dual boot Windows 10 - 32 bit and Linux Mint 17.3 - 64 bit on a Silicone Power 120GB SSD with no issues. Typical ASRock fast booting.

Cons: None. Does exactly what I wanted.

Other Thoughts: I was reluctant to buy a ASRock B85M-ITX motherboard because of all of the comments about it not working with Linux. However, since the price was so attractive and the motherboard included all the features I wanted, I decided to give it a try. The Linux comments seem to be related to the lack of ASRock drivers for Linux. In my experience, the Linux drivers never come from the motherboard manufacturer and are either included in the Linux distribution or downloaded, as is frequently the case with printers and video cards. In my case, the Linux Mint 17.3 distribution supported my video, audio and LAN with no effort on my part. The only driver I had to install was for my Brother HL-3170CDW color laser printer.
