5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid / Great Performer

Pros: Reliable and stable
Performance

Cons: The one con that I have found is so esoteric that I can't in good conscience take off a star. I'm using Windows Storage Spaces for disk management, which works great with one issue. The secondary RAID controllers on the motherboard use a Marvell chip for their controller. Marvell assigns the same Disk ID to each drive connected to it. This causes issues for Storage Spaces, as it depends on each drive having a unique Disk ID for proper disk administration. I got around this limitation by putting my boot drive and optical drive on these controllers, leaving the primary controller free for the Storage Spaces drives. I have spoken with ASRock about this, and they are aware of the problem. I am hopeful for a fix soon. It does not cause any other functionality issues, and the system is otherwise running perfectly.

Other Thoughts: I built a home server using this motherboard in April. It has been a completely reliable system. No crashes, no spontaneous reboots, it just keeps chugging along. I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, and have experienced none of the driver compatibility or other issues people other reviewers are reporting. I worked closely with ASRock during the purchasing and building process, and they were EXTREMELY helpful, going so far as to build the system I was planning to build before I bought it to ensure compatibility. I am running several VM's under Microsoft's Hyper-V hypervisor, and they all operate flawlessly as well. Only issue is lack of memory, so I need to buy more!

I recommend this motherboard without hesitation, even with the Storage Spaces limitation detailed above.

My system:
MB: ASRock C226 WS ATX Server Motherboard

CPU: Intel Intel Xeon E3-1245V3 Haswell 3.4GHz

RAM: Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ECC Unbuffered Server Memory w/TS Model KVR16E11/8

OS Drive: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Data Drives: Various

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition

5 out of 5 eggsGood workstation board

Pros: It works well with desktop Linux (Mint 16, 64-bit, KDE). After the required BIOS update, ECC is verified as working by PassMark's MemTest86.

I could go on - but really, it's a motherboard; the highest praise I can give it is simply to say that everything fit, nothing broke, and it seems to do what it says on the spec sheet.

Cons: None for me, but anyone thinking of installing Windows Server 2012 R2 should stay away, based on the other reviews. This would make me very nervous about Windows 8 support, since they use the same kernel series.

Other Thoughts: I bought this board for the ECC support, and with the goal of running desktop Linux on it, exclusively. If you're looking to do the same, you'll probably be happy with it.

My other core components:
- CPU: Intel Xeon E31225v3
- Heatsink & fan: Enermax ETS-T40-TB
- RAM: 2x KVR16E11/8 (Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600MHz ECC CL11)
- Power supply: Silverstone ST56F (560W EPS 12V)

2 out of 5 eggsBad attempt to enter the market of server/workstation

Pros: 1) Lots of USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, PCI-E connectors
2) Supporting VT-d

Cons: 1) It is very silly to cut off such useful feature as "Intel VPRO" from the motherboard, built with C226 chipset, that was designed for use in small business servers and workstations. I have no explanation to this situation.
2)In comparison to the cheaper "Asrock Z87 Extreme6" motherboard, has no advantages except supporting ECC RAM. But this advantage is quite doubtful, because the list of compatible memory includes very-very-very few positions.
3) Doesn`t support "Nvidia Multi GPU SLI" configuration.

Other Thoughts: No reason to spend your time and money to buy it, unless you need ECC. But even in this case you have the risk to get a headache.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Rondo,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
1. Intel VPRO: In order to support Vpro, i217 needs to be implemented in the board. The current generation of C226WS is using i210 + i210 because of the Teaming Function. But it will be changed to i217 to support Vpro in the next generation.
2. Since ASRock Rack is a new company, we are still undergoing the process to verify more memory products. (It seems Z87 has much more memory in QVL then C226 WS)
3. For the Nvidia SLI function, please contact at " william@asrockamerica.com " . We will assist you shortly.

Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsToo picky about memory

Pros: Has TPM option

Cons: List for acceptable memory generally 4gb and harder to find. ECC requires update. Don't recommend because of the short compatibility list.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please check the using memory is ECC, un-buffered (Un-Registered) due to mainboard does not supports ECC, buffered (Registered) memory.
If you have any technical questions please contact us with detail problem description at william@asrockamerica.com. We will assist you shortly.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows Server 2012 R2 not supported

Pros: Yet to find out!

Cons: Absolutely frustrating experience trying to get Windows 2012 R2 installed. Drivers not available; the Windows 2012 VGA driver crashes server manager. Booting from USB is pretty tricky with the Marvell SATA enabled and used as booting device.

Other Thoughts: Will try for a day or two more and will RMA if can't move past getting the VGA working.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear matsnj,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Unfortunately, Windows Server 2012 R2 has not been officially proven to be fully compatible with this work station board for now.
Please visit the link to check supported Windows at ' http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=C226%20WS#Download " .
For the boot option, please press F11 repeatedly to bring boot menu, then select desire drive to boot.
Or boot option can be set at UEFI BIOS, Boot.
If you have any technical questions please contact us at " William@asrockamerica.com " . We will assist you shortly.

2 out of 5 eggsVideo card Incompatibility?

Pros: I have yet to be able to make a real test run with it in Solidworks. Motherboard appears to work great until I install the video card...

Cons: With the W7000 installed I get no video from the card or motherboard. That is with the integrated video enabled all the time in the bios. Without the W7000 installed integrated video works fine. Tried multiple PCI-E slots. I have tried the card in a different system and it works fine.

Other Thoughts: I am looking to build more workstations similar to this... If this get resolved soon I will be repeating the build. Otherwise... I go back to Asus.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
To Enable both iGPU and discrete VGA card, please Enable the IGPU Multi-Moniter at BIOS, Advanced, Chipset Configuration.
For the VGA card issue, download and update the latest BIOS at link " http://www.asrock.com/server/overview.asp?Model=C226 WS&cat=Download&os=BIOS "
If problem still persist, set PCIE6 link speed to Gen1 at BIOS, Advanced, Chipset Configuration.

5 out of 5 eggsBoard worked fine

Pros: It was well packaged and appears sturdy; although I can't speak to the quality of components used in its construction. No problems -- works fine with Kingston 32GB ECC Unbuffered 1600 RAM ( KVR16E11K4/32).

Cons: Came with firmware 1.00. I upgraded it to 1.10 with instant flash on a usb stick for ECC auto detect. No problems flashing the bios though.

Other Thoughts: It's a solid board. If it has what you need and fits your price range, get it.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Lots of SATA ports and USB 3.0
Specs look good on paper

Cons: This board is supposed to work with Windows Server 2012. Both LAN ports were inoperative and DVD drives are not even recognized. Installed the latest drivers from the web site and tried resetting UEFI, etc. with no luck.

Other Thoughts: ASRock is trying to get into the server arena but fails with this board. Lack of current drivers, hardware glitches and technical support has not even responded after over 3 business days. I sent it back and went with a more trusted name in server boards (SuperMicro).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We always do our best to support customers.
Unfortunately, due to mail server problem, our reply mail was not sent out. However, we do reply both email and phone promptly except on week-end and holidays.

4 out of 5 eggsupdate on ECC support

Pros: BIOS 1.10 supports ECC

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am the author of the review from 9/15/2013 who complained about lack of ECC support.

Unlike the BIOS that was available on 9/15, the newest BIOS 1.10 now recognizes ECC memory and offers an option to enable/disable it. Therefore my main reason to complain is no longer valid.

I have however been unable to verify that ECC actually works. As I said on 9/15, I have a known defective DIMM module that causes correctable ECC errors on a couple of other motherboards in my possession. I installed this module on the C226WS. After several days of testing, the BIOS error log did not record any ECC errors, whereas I would observe 2-3 errors/day on other boards. On the other hand, I did not observe any memory corruption either. Thus my tentative conclusion so far is that the C226WS is silently correcting ECC errors, or maybe my "defective" DIMM happens to run just fine with C226WS. Either way I have no reason to complain.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Thank you for update the review. For the recording ECC errors, our engineer team is working on it.
Please check for future BIOS update at link " http://www.asrock.com/server/overview.asp?Model=C226 WS&cat=Download&os=BIOS".

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Board!!!

Pros: Running WS2012 with Hyper-V installed for some Linux VM's in a home cloud environment. Not sure why others rated the way they did.... After trying several other desktop boards, and much frustration! I decided to give up on running Server on a Z87 board and go for a true server board. My setup requires an extremely stable platform due to the VM's and the 36TB's of file storage that is connected via a SAS RAID card and also using the built in RAID for 5 drives as well. Host OS is installed on a SSD.
This is one of the best boards I saw related to video connections, and it has firewire for those of us that still use it for video transfer.
I would highly recommend this product and will be buying another one for my desktop workstation due to the stability that this board exhibits. I have stressed tested it thoroughly as well and it just would not lock up no matter what I threw at it!!!

Cons: When I find a con, I will update.

Other Thoughts: BUY IT!!!!
