5 out of 5 eggsGreat board - great price

Pros: -Great price
-Reliable server grade board with decent performance (running on a 12TB FreeNAS with pentium G3258 and 8GB ECC ram)
-ECC support
-8 SATA Ports

I was happy, since the board arrived with BIOS revision 2.30, which did not require me to update it with a first generation Haswell CPU. I installed my Intel G3258 and the system booted up instantly without any issues.

Other than that, there is nothing special to say after less than a week of usage. Performance is great (around 85-95 MB/s writing speed over LAN) and installation easy. I definitely recommend this board!

Cons: None so far

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Installed a Celeron G1820 with 8G of RAM and a 128G SSD. It's been running as my home XenServer for the last few days with two Debian VMs and pfSense. So far, so good. I like the fact the there's very few extras on the motherboard. Perfect for a simple home server. Currently, only pulls about 28W at idle.

Cons: None. Very happy with this mainboard and even considering purcahsing a second one for my NAS.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's the bios...

Pros: Asrocks customer support. Newegg and the Easy RMA process.

Cons: Ordered this mobo to run a small Win 2012 R2 file server. Got it installed and first boot got nothing. Spent time troubleshooting. Pulled the CPU,RAM, and the power supply and swapped them from another computer and everything worked on the other computer. I even swapped the power supply cables.. RMA'd the board back as it looked like it was a DOA mobo. Got the second board and it was the same thing. That's when I got Asrock tech support involved. They came back with this very important advice:
I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused you. Based on your problem description and the list of components in use, I believe that the system BIOS on the board needs to be updated to P2.30 in order for your new Haswell-R CPU to work/POST. The board you purchased from the retail store may have been stored in the retail warehouse for quite some time. The system BIOS that came with it is the earliest version. Back in the day when the BIOS was written, the Haswell-R CPU wasn't released so a certain coding wasn’t used in BIOS development.

What you may try now is to temporarily use a non-Haswell-R CPU to make the board to POST first, then update the BIOS to P2.30 immediately. Please kindly follow this link and click on the BIOS on the left menu to download the BIOS update file. You may use Instant Flash within the BIOS menu to update the BIOS.

Other Thoughts: Haswell-R WILL NOT work with this board unless you have bios P2.30 or newer. If you try a Haswell-R you will not be able to boot it and will get a blank screen. Fans will turn on and you will still be able to shut it off with the power switch. Newegg has a stock of these boards and most likely will have bios version 1.0 on it. You will need an older Haswell CPU installed first to update the bios to recognize the newer CPU's.
I know this board would have worked just fine with a newer bios and with newegg and asrock helping sort this out I give it 4 eggs.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, Usually

Pros: Cheap 'server' grade board with ecc support. Works for the new E3 intel cpu's. OK for a relatively robust nas box. 8 sata3 ports lends for some pretty awesome data throughput.

Cons: Seems to lock up on a fresh freenas install.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely purchase a higher quality board if I had the chance again, something with out of band management. Having the server freeze up for no apparent reason while remote is a bummer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Since there are two storage controllers onboard, a detail storage drives configuration is necessary for review.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Well packaged

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: Bought this board for a low end server build. Figured for the price it was a great idea and the chances of getting a dead one were slim to none since these are supposed to be "server grade". Nope. Wasted 3-4 hours swapping PSUs and RAM hoping it would work but no hope was found. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra cash for the supermicro.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We will be more than happy to help to resolve the issues.

4 out of 5 eggsworks cheap

Pros: This works. It has all the classic points that makes it nice: no sound, on board LED, etc.

Cons: none so far. Since this is a server grade board, I expect it to last longer than usual.

Other Thoughts: Kingston ECC memory doesn't work with this board.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Thank you for your purchase and review.
For the Kingston ECC memory issues, we have tested, BIOS version P1.30, Kingston-DDR3-8G-1600-11-ECC-1.5v-02( KVR16E 11/8 1.5V), MB can boot to BIOS Menu normally.
Please download and update the latest BIOS at link " " .
Visit memory support reference link at "".

If problem still persist, please contact us directly with memory model and BIOS version at " ". We can assist you shortly.

Thank you
