4 out of 5 eggsMy experience thus far

Pros: Perfect home server board. I'm using this for a home NAS running FreeNAS 9.2. SATA ports for days, and the fanless heatsink is a plus in my books.

Board stays pretty cool even in a tight case like the Fractal Design Node 304 with the CPU and motherboard temps staying right around 48 Celcius.

Low power usage is great.

IPMI is much more useful than I originally anticipated, and is a feature that makes the server unbelievably easy to use. Very easy to configure and the web GUI is very user friendly.

Cons: The board is quite pricey, but you really do get what you pay for.

Boot times are quite slow, but I don't really know if I'd consider that a con on a server board that's on 24/7.

It is next to impossible to find officially supported memory for this board here in Canada, so you do end up having to buy non-officially supported RAM.

Other Thoughts: I got the board to boot using KVR1333D3E9S/8G memory purchase here on newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsFreeNAS Setup

Pros: Works with FreeNAS with no extra tinkering

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Has been running solidly for about 4 months now. Using 6 WD Red 2TB drives. Board stays cool and have had zero problems with my setup.

5 out of 5 eggsNice ESX server

Pros: This is a great VMware server. I have ESX 5.5 running on this for over a week now. I've built a over a dozen VMs on this now an they all run at the same time. The CPU is barely breaking a sweat!

I needed a small VMware environment to build out Commvault servers and media agents to run some simple demos. I have a couple of windows and Linux servers running as well as some MS-SQL and oracle servers.

I'll be adding reporting and indexing servers on this esx server next. The server should easily handle this.

The last piece I will add to this little environment is deduplication. I have a solid state drive on order for this.

I am really impressed by the performance of this little board. It is definitely worth the price.

One other thing to mention is the low power draw. I work this board hard and It's only drawing 25 watts. That is just incredible!

Cons: 16MB memory is a little hard to come by. I went with 4 x 8GB dimms.

Other Thoughts: I initially bought the wrong memory (buffered) and the board would not post. I worked with William from ASROCK support and he helped me find the proper memory. Be careful what you order. Check the hardware matrix at ASROCK!

2 out of 5 eggsLots of stability issues

Pros: It's a very low power 8-core board with support for ECC memory and has IPMI.

My system currently consumes about 24W.

Cons: Stability issues galore.
I've been very disappointed with this board. For starters, it absolutely requires active cooling. The passive heatsink is not capable of keeping the CPU. I originally wanted to use this board in a m350 mini-itx case, but could not due to the poor cooling.

My second issue is that this board is extremely unstable in Linux environments, despite the manufacture claiming to support Linux. The Intel nic will frequently perform resets which will result in hanging the system. If you search online there are reports talking about disabling c-states, speedstep, acpi, etc. But none of them are guaranteed to work. I've tried multiple versions of Ubuntu and CentOS with 3 different versions of the Intel nic driver and it was still unstable. I'm now convinced the problem is with the BMC sharing a port with the Intel nic.

Other reviews have discussed problems with the SATA controller and Linux but this did not affect me as I was not building a NAS.

Other Thoughts: The NIC issue on this board has rendered the system almost completely useless for me as it makes the server completely unreliable. I may test purchasing an additional nic and see how that works but I've become quite bitter with this system as I've spent too much money already.

While the board states it can support 64-bits of unbuffered ECC memory, 16 gig UDIMMS are extremely rare and expensive. More practically you'll be using 32-gigs of ECC memory (4x8).

If Intel or Asrock has a firmware/bmc/driver update that solves my NIC issue, I would update my rating to 4/5.

1 out of 5 eggsLasted 3 months

Pros: 12 SATA (even though Marvell chipset)
Mini-ITX
IPMI
Dual NIC

Cons: Just decided to do after replacing a WD hd in my freenas. Boots, see 2 solid lights, 1 stays solid and the other blinks after 30 seconds. I've tried new RAM, PSU, HD's, anything and it won't book.

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't trust Asrock in the server work

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please provide the purpose of replacing a hard drive.
BMC LED starts blinking after 30 seconds of power source input and indicates a normal state. Another LED stays solid and it indicates power state.
Please contact William@asrockamerica.com for detail support for your “booting problem”.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsESXi home lab server

Pros: eight cores, remote IPMI management

Cons: ESXi does not support Direct I/O (Intel VT-d) so you cannot directly access hardware from VM. Also, access to Network and SATA might require custom driver integration with ISO.

Other Thoughts: The runs cool and quiet and I have done limited testing but it seems to support running a lot of VMs simultaneously. So far I have this installed in the APEX MI-008 case and I plan on adding a fan but the temps have stayed lower than 65c with only the single quiet power supply fan. (I plan on adding more cooling and I have not pushed it).

Support for IPMI was great as I never plugged a keyboard/monitor into this - mounted ISO file remotely through IPMI and installed OS to machine!

At first I moved the flash and drives from an ESXi 5.0 server directly to this system but it would not recognize network or SATA ports. To make a long story short, I did a clean install from latest ESXi 5.5 Update 1 and it recognizes the Intel Gigabit and the "rear" SATA ports (2x 6Gbs, 4x 3Gbs), but does not see the from six SATA ports. possibly need to add a driver to access but I'm up an running so I haven't tried that yet.

I was able to boot up 18 VMs and response was good (I was playing with an XP VM while other VMs were booting. They booted to an idle state, so I was not pushing the CPU or I/O

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great and I got awesome support

Pros: Running it with freenas, 5 plugins. Cool, low power, never coming even close to using the CPU, stable as a rock.
Easily saturates Gigabit, what a change vs my old Atom

Cons: Yes, it does boot slowly, takes about 30-40 secs to BIOS. But it's a server board, you start it once and then only when you change a drive or so (can't do hotswap in my repurposed H430 case because I had to remove the backplane).

Other Thoughts: I got awesome support. The fan control was not working properly and it would randomly switch everything to full speed. I wrote them and William responded immediately and tested the thing for hours to reproduce it, but to no avail. We tried a few things and finally he sent me a beta BMC bios that fixed it - really liked his persistence and not blaming it on me.

1 out of 5 eggsProblem Board

Pros: Lots of SATA ports and Passively cooled CPU. Also out of band management is a nice plus

Cons: After battling to get this board to even POST, finally found it was the memory I was using. Switched to Kingston ECC (KVR16E11S8/4I) not list but it was the only ECC ram I could find. Then installed 2013 Server and the thing crashes every 15 minutes!

Other Thoughts: This board has alot of potential, but is too unstable, or maybe I just got a dud board. Also if the RAM is not compatible how about some sort of POST error instead of showing nothing on the VGA output.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Unfortunately, Server 2013 is not in the support list.
For more information, please visit the link for supported OS " http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=C2750D4I#Download ".
For POST error (Dr.Debug), due to size of mini-ITX, integration of Dr.Debug function is limited.
However, it can be trouble shoot with chassis speaker (beeps code).
If you have any technical questions please contact us with detail problem description at william@asrockamerica.com. We will assist you shortly.

1 out of 5 eggsUtter Garbage

Pros: Looks good on paper.

Cons: The first board worked for 1 day. Through testing, I ascertained that a SATA controller failed.

When I contacted Asrock's support, they failed to respond to any of the issues I was experiencing.

The second board worked once, then failed to post.

Hotswapping isn't supported by FreeBSD.
Enabling any of the advanced CPU features causes instability.
The SATA ports by the back panel can cause an issue if you use an older Supermicro case.

Other Thoughts: My RAM is compatible, I was properly grounded, and the PSU isn't faulty.

This board was incredibly misrepresented. After the week of testing the first board, and the new board failing within 30 minutes, I've decided to get a refund and buy something not made by Asrock.

Do not buy this board if you want something that works.
