5 out of 5 eggsAsrock z97 Extreme 4 Mobo

Pros: - this motherboard has excellent features and plenty of pci, sata, and usb headers
- onboard power and reset switch for use in a test bench or something of the sort
- well built and very sturdy motherboard (i have a coolermaster hyper 612 ver.2 cooler hanging on it with no signs of problems and for those who dont know, that cooler is massive)
- i have had no issues whatsoever with this board! i love it, it is beautiful, and it runs like a champ! i have had this board for over a year now with none of the problems listed in other comments!

Cons: I dont know... not an abundance of sata cables included? i like having more sata devices than is really necessary so i had to buy a few extras

1 out of 5 eggsBe Cautious of ASRock RMAs

Pros: Works great - For as long as it works.

Cons: Had one suddenly stop booting. Power supply and CPU fan would spin for about a second and then shut off. Did the standard troubleshooting of removing all the components except for a couple core components. No change. Even with everything detached, it wouldn't even get to the start of POST.

Went through the RMA process, paid to ship the board to them and got the replacement. The replacement was physically damaged prior to it being shipped from ASRock (In addition to bent and missing pins on the USB 3 header, the plastic casing around it was also broken, and the missing plastic was NOT in the bag or box, so it wasn't damaged in shipping.) ASRock apparently missed a very obviously damaged header during their "refurbishing" process..

Called ASRock and they offered to LET me go through the RMA process again, at my expense..

Ended up talking them into MAYBE covering the return shipping expense by sending pictures of the damaged header, but was left waiting for a day so far with no response to the pictures.

Two weeks after initial contact with ASRock and I still don't have a working product.. Will be AT LEAST another week before I get another chance at a working board since they won't cross-ship. Don't buy ASRock if you actually want to rely on your machine not being down for close to a month if something goes wrong.

(And to the Mfr - I already went through your tech support link - That's how I got the first RMA going. Please don't just link me to it again. It doesn't help.)

Other Thoughts: Unless this gets worked out.. And I mean fast, I'll never buy another ASRock product again.

1 out of 5 eggsFail

Pros: none

Cons: Motherboard worked well for about 4 months - Then went completely dead. RMA was difficult to say the least took a nudge from Newegg (thank-you Newegg) to get Asrocks attention. After spending 30 some dollars to send it in they sent a replacement that crashes to blue screen constantly.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the blue screen, please load the BIOS default.
Test with single memory module, switching another memory if problem still persist.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: Nice board, too bad a extremely high amount of them are broken

Cons: Board shuts off randomly and sometimes won't turn back on and many other customers have this problem, just google the name and you'll see. I tried to get my money back via ASRock support and they called me a liar although I had plenty of evidence.

Absolute garbage board, buy an MSI or Gigabyte one instead

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please load the BIOS default.
Check the CPU is not overheating which may shut off the system to avoid damage the CPU (CPU protection function).
It will turn back on when CPU temperature is dropped to normal.
However, we will be more than happy to assist you for replacement, if the mainboard is malfunctioned.
Please contact us at http://www.ASRock.com/Support/tsd.asp. We will assist you shortly.

1 out of 5 eggsDo you your research then avoid

Pros: Great heritage.

Cons: I have been using Extreme4 series since Z77. Last year I upgraded a couple of machines to the Z97. One failed on a power issue during set-up. I assumed it was my fault and bought a replacement which did the same but this time I RMA'd and it is still working. The second unit worked until a power outage now whenever I power down if it switches itself on after 2 days when connected to mains. If I switch off it takes 1 days and then reboots. You have to try to reboot every time you walk by!

Check out online sites you will find this board has well documented power issues. Avoid.

Other Thoughts: None of these problems were widely known when I first used the board last August so far too late to RMA the one I trashed. I was just about to replace a couple of my older Asrock systems but its time to switch vendor. Well done ASrock your failure to address this issue has lost another loyal customer who has bought 15 motherboards in the last 3 years. Bye!

1 out of 5 eggsNice Motherbaord layout, Bad Quality

Pros: Nice Layout, Had all the Connection/Slots/Features I was looking for at a good price. Fairly fast RMA from ASRock.

Cons: Not Reliable. ASRock makes you send the motherboard at your own cost(~$20), and if anything happens along the way It voids any warranty you had on it.

Other Thoughts: I now have had two of these motherboards self fry. Something to do with a LDO Voltage Regulator chip on these keep failing. Also First motherboard died after 5 months, the second a month later.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent on mine so far

Pros: Have this board for couple months and this is the third Asrock board I've owned, great value, works as it's supposed to; good temperature, lots of ports.

Cons: None so far. I actually try to reproduce the problem many people have with this board, like unplugging the power cord, disconnecting the PSU, it did NOT die on me. Will update if this happens.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked well for 11 months

Pros: Great features, no issues at all for 11 months.

Cons: Wouldn't boot after a power outage one day. Symptoms exactly mirror issues found by other owners, which can be found by doing an internet search for asrock z97 extreme 4 issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

1 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival

Pros: Lots of CPU and case fan slots in various places on the motherboard. Plenty of SATA connectors as well.

Cons: Dead on arrival. Won't power on / boot / post. Pressing the CMOS reset button with the PSU powered on like many forum posts said would make the fans start for about half a second, but nothing more. The RAM slots were also flimsy / defective. I've built plenty of PCs in my time, and I've never had arms from RAM slots fall off... they were not solidly attached!

Other Thoughts: The ASRock Z77 Extreme4 was a great motherboard. What happened ASRock? It's one thing when you receive something dead on arrival as an anomaly, but the hundreds of reviews and confused forum posts about the power problem, whether it is dead on arrival or happens after a few months use after unplugging the PSU, is upsetting.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
• Unplug the ATX power, remove all components from mainboard.
• Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
• Clear the CMOS.
• Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan.
• Test with single memory module.
• Test with onboard video.
• Connect the monitor to onboard video.
• Plug the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power.
• Turn on the power (using onboard power button) to check if its post.

If you have any technical Support inquiry, please contact us at http://www.ASRock.com/Support/tsd.asp. We will assist you shortly.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival. Flimsy build quality on my unit.

Pros: Lots of SATA 3 ports. Looks cool. Has better case fan plug in locations than the Z77 Extreme4.

Cons: Dead on Arrival. I used my roommates computer to swap out and test everything. Only the ASRock Z97 motherboard did not work. There is a reddit post about the board not working after unplugging the PSU a few times. Mine didn't work right out of the box. I tried the resetting the CMOS trick with the PSU turned on. The CPU and case fans would turn on for 1 second or less, but no boot, post, no getting to BIOS, etc. Sometimes the CMOS trick wouldn't even work. Also, the RAM mount arms fell off as soon as I tried to mount RAM. I had to fish around the bottom of the case to find the arms and reinsert them, but they would not stay in. Very flimsy build quality.

Other Thoughts: I was decently happy with my Z77 Extreme4 until it decided to die on me a couple weeks ago (and I bought it in 2014, so it last a little less than 2 years). I decided to take a chance on Z97... I guess feel me twice, shame on me. There's enough information on the Internet about the power on problem that I really should not have bought this board. :(
