5 out of 5 eggsExcellent MB!

Pros: It seems this MB is getting a bad rap for what possibly seems like a bad batch of early boards. I was actually coming from an ASUS board on my AMD and I switched to Intel so I was after an 1150 board.

I had looked at the ASUS Z97 and H97 boards and was set on the H97 until I saw the Extreme 4. This board has a lot going for it, 8 SATA 3 ports, a SATA express, and a M.2. Also has 6 USB 3.0 ports on the rear an a 19-Pin USB 3.0 on the board for internal 3.0 readers.

The build quality is fantastic, very aesthetically pleasing. I'm not sure about other reviews of heat sinks being flimsy but when you have an elevated portion of the MB, you definitely want it to give a little so it doesn't break at the board. The heat sinks are spring loaded and allow movement and this is very favorable...not at all flimsy.

I'm running an i7 4790K and couldn't be more pleased with this setup. The MB recognized my Dominator 1600 RAM and the XMP profile worked flawlessly.

Cons: As far as cons....I don't have much and it doesn't really warrant docking an egg for them.

The SATA ports on the edge of the board, are partially covered by my GTX 670 card. This isn't the boards fault since it's an ATX size but it's a big card. The ports are side loaded so removing the SATA connectors on 2 of the ports are a tight fit with the fingers.

If you are using all 3 PCI slots, the middle slot is just under the HD audio connector but the card will fit, but it's a close fit, just route your wire accordingly, again, not a con just a mild nit pick.

Other Thoughts: This is my first ASRock product and I'm very pleased with it. The fact it has 3 eggs at my time of writing doesn't do this board justice. Going back to my opening statement this is what I have discovered....

I didn't know of any powering up issues with this board until I brought it home. After reviewing many problems with this mother board, it seems the consensus that there were problems with serial numbers beginning with 47 and into 49, more with the earlier numbers. When I checked my box my serial number starts with 51, and I have had absolutely no issues with this MB, the BIOS, whatever.....has been a very solid MB.

At no time during ownership of the Extreme 4 has my setup even given me one area of concern...I can't say that for other PC products I have owned and if that changes I will post it here but I will follow up at the 6 month mark as well.

I purchased back in February and have the serial number starting with 51, so I want to assume all of these boards have had their issue fixed with the no power up. At least verify the serial number before installing.

5 out of 5 eggsFix for the Board

Pros: This board is ready for the 4790 and the other later 1150 Intel chips.
Looks great.
Great working board.

Cons: Here is the Problem that has been nagging at you. Seems AsROCK got a bad Batch or CR2032 Batteries.
The Motherboard will stop working but its the battery. Just put in a new one and it's great.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to post this for all you peeps that would like this board but are afraid of it. Don't be. The Batteries are terrible in this board but one stop at the local store and get the CR2032 Battery and replace it. The System will boot up great and become your favorite board again.

1 out of 5 eggsStick with Asus

Pros: Pretty

Cons: I went to open my case to blow out dust after 34 days in a new PC. I experienced the same flaw where it will not turn back on. When I went to RMA the item, I was told by ASRock I would not be receiving a new item, only a referb. Do not buy.

1 out of 5 eggsFatally flawed

Pros: An excellent, well-featured board for the 11 months it worked.

Cons: Worked for 11 months. The Extreme4 has a known flaw, usually triggered by turning off or unplugging the PSU, where it will no longer POST. This may be related to a voltage regulator near the BIOS chips which overheats (so far no one has reported a fire...) even after this problem presents itself. There is no workaround or fix for this issue. You may be able to get your PC to boot again by chance, but this will happen again as soon as the PSU is disconnected from power.

I spent $80 on a new PSU and spent a day testing components before I narrowed it down to the mainboard. Googling for problems specifically with the Extreme4 led me to a Reddit thread (search "Possible reoccurring problem with the ASRock Z97 Extreme4") which indicates this is relatively common and affects a wide range of serial numbers.

I wrote an email to ASRock at the mailbox indicated on their website detailing the problem and the steps I had already taken to resolve it, and asking what they could offer via the RMA. The reddit thread suggested they would replace it with a refurbished Extreme4, and I definitely don't want another one of these boards. I received a one-sentence reply telling me to call tech support. I called tech support and they said they would email me a form.

Since this is the level of support I'm going to get, and a refurb Extreme4 is out of the question to me, I don't expect the manufacturer to make good. I ordered an ASUS board instead and I suggest anyone looking at the ASRock Extreme series do the same.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this board. It is more likely than not to fail, and even those who went through the RMA gauntlet received refurbished Extreme4s, which is unacceptable in light of the fact that these boards share a massive defect even when new. I'm unlikely to consider this manufacturer at all in the future and will stick with ASUS/MSI.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother one bites the dust

Pros: Worked wonderfully at first, games and design software both ran really well on my build

Cons: Just like all the other reviews I'm seeing, I shut down my computer and turned off my power strip then the next day it was completely dead. I think it actually shorted my power supply as well because I went through the RMA process and got that replaced first while troubleshooting (it was a Seasonic) and my computer still has no power. After reading other reviews I'd rather save the money from the ASRock's RMA and just spend it on a different MOBO

Other Thoughts: If you're lucky to get one that doesn't have this fault it actually was a really nice mobo when first installed. If you still plan on buying this I would HIGHLY recommend getting one of Newegg's protection plans just in case because this issue seems to be happening to so many people.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing Motherboard

Pros: Worked well until it died.

Cons: Died after I unplugged my computer for some maintenance.

Other Thoughts: Apparently everyone seems to be having a similar problem with this motherboard as I am. The motherboard ceases to show any signs of life after the computer is unplugged for whatever reason. It's such a huge flaw. How did this get past product testing? Apparently this is a reoccurring issue too. If you simply search for "Asrock Z97 Extreme 4 issues" on the internet, the first link that pops up is a website detailing the exact issue I and everyone else seems to be having along with a long list of complaints. The worst part is Asrock is known for their subpar customer service, so I can't imagine the hassle it will be to try and get this product returned and replaced in a reasonable amount of time especially considering I have to wait until Monday to submit an RMA request form since they're center isn't open on weekends. I rely and use my computer everyday, so I need it up and running as soon as possible. I am so disappointed in this product and in Asrock.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Power

Pros: Nice,when it works.

Cons: As with numerous others, my board will not power on anymore. At first I though it was the power supply. I replaced that and the computer still would not power on. I used a volt meter and found that the problem was with the board, not the PS. Wasted money on the new PS and this board. AsRock's RMA policy is too much of a PIA to bother and they make YOU pay shipping to send back THIER defective product.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor motherboard that won't last

Pros: During my about 2 months of use this was a good board that let me do what i needed.

Cons: After about the two months of use i turned off my computer and went away for the weekend. When I came back home i was not able to turn my computer back on. After fiddling with it and reading some things about this happening to others i was able to turn it back on. Then i had to turn it off again for some maintenance and it will not start up again no matter what I do.

1 out of 5 eggsNever unplug

Pros: It had a great price.

Cons: Buy the mobo if you like to do the following:
1) Never taking out individual computer components for cleaning.
2) Unplugging and re plugging the 24 pin power for an entire hour until your index finger and thumb gets sore.

Other Thoughts: Bought this mobo back in November 2014 and after cleaning the hardware 3-4 times, the computer began to stop booting when everything was back in place. I end up spending more than an hour trying to get it to boot after every clean.

Resetting the CMOS, taking out everything except PSU/CPU/Mobo, removing RAM sticks will not work. The only method I have found that works is unplugging and re plugging the 24 pin until it powers up(which is time consuming).
