1 out of 5 eggsCMOS Battery dies

Pros: Product functions as advertised. Other than the one con below, I would rate this as a very good MB

Cons: The CMOS Battery continues to be drained overnight. The UEFI has been updated. I've only had the MB running for about 10 days although I've owned it for over a month. Been buying parts when I can and only recently completed the build. I'm stumped on this issue. I've been through 4 or 5 batteries now and I'm ready to just give up

Other Thoughts: This has been frustrating. The product was not that expensive and rather than go through the head aches of sending it back and forth, I'll probably just scrap the board, and buy a better product. I'll never buy another product from ASRock. I'm not very forgiving.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to install. Looks good. If it worked then the price point would be right.

Cons: The board went belly up after a month. It wouldn't boot to bios even with just bare bones. It took me weeks to test out different parts before I was certain it was the mobo. So I RMA it after another week of back in fourth with their technical service(which of course is only through e-mail.) I get a new mobo and guess what? It won't boot with dual channel memory. Even though the ram and all other components work in another set up. So now I have to pay for shipping to get another mobo. Crossing my fingers that the third one will actually work...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that second mainboard having issue with the memory slots.
All replacement mainboards had been tested before shipped to avoid back and forth shipping.
Please clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and cooler.
Test with single memory module on each slot to verify all slots are working.
If you have any technical support inquiry, please contact us at http://www.ASRock.com/support/tsd.asp. We will assist you shortly.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall good budget board

Pros: - Stable
- Overclocks well

Cons: - During the initial boot, it powers on for a second, turns off, and then starts normally. This is annoying as hell and can't be good for hard drives and other components.
- Doesn't have any of the cool high-end features that AsRock used to be famous for.
- Overclocking voltage options are finicky. The board automatically changes voltages depending on the multiplier or other options, even though I've manually set the voltage. The "Adaptive voltage" setting is a pain since there appears to be some internally-set voltage that you can't see that you can only modify by telling it to add or remove volts. Why can't they make it easy and just give us an idle voltage and load voltage?

Other Thoughts: For me, this was an "upgrade" from a P67 pro3. The only worthwile added features are an m.2 slot and video outputs. It loses: the debug led, the back-panel clear cmos button, the power and reset buttons on the motherboard, and several CPU power phases.

Though it's been very stable and overclocks well (haswell at 4.5ghz and 1.2v). You just need to make sure you're confirming your CPU voltages manually since what you tell the board to give the CPU may not be what it's actually getting.

5 out of 5 eggsGets my vote!

Pros: Well laid out board, I like the black livery. High end components seemed to have been used throughout, in particular Nichicon electrolytics in the audio section. Nicely packaged board with very little chance of transit damage. Plethora of connection options and triple monitor support.

Cons: Apart from the board being a bit nonstandard in terms of size, this caused a minor headache with my bench case, and also made me be very careful when installing the RAM and plugging in the PSU connectors, I could find no cons to speak of. The lack of high end multi board graphics isn’t an issue for me as I don’t really game seriously. Right angle SATA connectors are a pain in the proverbial, this board is on a bench case for now but I have visions of me fumbling about inside a case trying and failing to get these things plugged in. None of these are worthy of docking an egg though.

Other Thoughts: Lots of USB 3.0 (yay!) and even more USB 2.0, why, why, why? Overall I really liked this board, the install was smooth and easy, the included software utilities were pretty good, if you like that sort of thing, personally, however, I don’t care for them. I really must get my hands on a decent sized m.2 drive.

I mounted the motherboard in an open bench case (N82E16811353001), with a Core i7 4770K. The 4770K was cooled with an Enermax Liqmax 120S cooler, 8GB of AMD R9 Gamer 2400 memory was installed with a Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD boot drive, a SATA DVD Writer and an FSP Group AURUM S 400W PSU. This was a relatively easy install with a minor hiccup caused by a need for a firmware update, after the initial messing about with the firmware update, I installed windows 8.1 from a USB 3.0 flash drive. The whole install process went very, very, smoothly and very quickly, I just love USB 3.0 installs and SSD boot drives! Playing around with the oc I managed to get the 4770K to 4.2 GHz without really trying too hard, so higher speeds are probably attainable.

On a side note (heh), this is probably the best sound I’ve heard from a mobo, I’ve recently bought a new set of speakers and thought it was those but when comparing this mobo to my desktop machine using the same speakers this board is definitely the better audio performer.

Definitely a 5 egg item.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent board

Pros: - Price
- M2 socket
- Aesthetics
- Intel Gigabit LAN
- Performance
- Great for budget overclocking

Cons: Knocking off one egg because of a few bios issues I experienced prior to updating it. After the update, it was smooth sailing, though!

Other Thoughts: Let me start with the price of this board - it is an incredible bargain for the features offered. You generally get mediocre audio, and the cheapest integrated LAN controller available. That is not the case with the Z97 Pro4. Though not rare, it is still unusual to find an Intel LAN controller integrated into a budget-priced board. The integrated audio is also very nice!

It remains to be seen how useful the M2 socket will really be, but I do appreciate that I have the option since SSDs are pushing SATA3 to it's limits.

Aesthetically, the board is beautiful! A black PCB accented with blue heatsinks is really a nice touch. I almost wish I had a case with a window so I could see it more often.

The Intel gigabit LAN is a great addition. Most board makers opt for the cheaper realtek LAN controller, but we all know that the Intel controllers are superior to all others, don't we? :)

With my budget-priced Z97 Pro4 in hand, I decided to pair it with an equally low-cost CPU - the unlocked Pentium G3258. I rounded out the components with a PNY 120gb SSD, and 8gb of corsair DDR3. A great low-cost setup that provides me with awesome overclocking potential.

Once setup, and running Windows 7, The UEFI bios makes overclocking a breeze, so it was time to start the overclocking fun! I managed to take the CPU up to 4.6ghz at 1.27v - a really nice overclock. It absolutely screams without overheating, and that is with the stock cooler.

In real world use, I absolutely love the board. It's stable, cheap, and performs very well.

1 out of 5 eggs3rd time is a charm right?

Pros: It looks pretty? I hope someone makes a decent Motherboard with blue in it here soon as i have no reason to expect this board to last out a year and all my other components are blue.

Cons: So first board went belly up about 4-6 weeks after using it. Updating the BIOS boogered the SATA controller somehow and broke AHCI functionality. the HD began to boot again once i changed it to IDE. After RMA'ing that board and waiting 3 weeks for the next one to come in, it was DOA. In the 5 days it has taken me to get the second RMA, i have been told several times the board had been tested. Not sure how you can screw up installing a motherboard but.....using my CompTIAn A+ skills (lol?) If the RAM, SSD, and Video card boot in 2 other systems..... and your board will not power up at all in 2 different cases with two different power supplies even when jumping the power switch on both cases ....its pretty obvious your motherboard is DOA.

I asked for a prepaid shipping label Thursday and was told for the second day in a row..."Someone will send you one in 30 minutes." ....

*sigh*

Other Thoughts: Wish i could give zero eggs.
wish i could use the PC i built 3 months ago.
wish i was a little bit taller
wish i would have gotten an MSI.
wish i was a baller
wish i had a spare hundred bucks to buy a proper motherboard
wish there were more than 3 people working @ ASRock
wish it took less than 5 business days to get an RMA number and shipping label.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the SATA mode, the default setting for SATA mode is AHCI. However, Windows would failed to boot if the Windows has installed with IDE mode which required adjust the setting to IDE.

For the power on issue,
Please remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
Clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan.
Plug the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power firmly.
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat MOBO

Pros: Very complete, good amount and variety of headers.
High value MOBO with Z97 chipset. Hard to beat at this price!
OC possible and pretty easy, with the usual caveats on ventilation and cooling.

Cons: Minus 1 egg on 2 things:

1) the audio chipset, as stated elsewhere, is very very average. If in need of sound capacities, one may want to consider another board or add a good sound card.

2) the front panel audio header is located on the left bottom corner (with the rear panel connectors on your left). If one's case front audio cable is on the medium to short side and there is a massive graphic card, it will be hard to reach, which is my situation. Check it out, and know that the following extension cable will fit the bill: APEVIA CVTAUDIOE25 11".

1 out of 5 eggswish i bought MSI

Pros: Great price. The Brief 3 weeks it worked without issue was awesome. after a BIOS update it was spotty and failed 4 weeks later. ASRock appears to be run by 3 people or so it would seem. website should scare you and give you an idea to what you can expect from tech support.

Cons: Company actually advises you to NOT update BIOS. Doesn't instil much confidence does it? Board worked for two months, had to pay to ship their dead MB back to them and it would appear they just shipped it back. My PC has been down close to a month and i get to pay to send their failure back and i guess try again. If you enjoy spending money and not using the products this board is for you, if you want to actual use the PC you purchased then ASRock is not for you.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the BIOS, we do not recommend to update the BIOS if the system is working fine.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

Pros: Outstanding piece of hardware hitting a niche in the market, high quality parts and speed without excess SLI capability for those that don't need it.

Cons: Unfortunately, like another review, it has failed after two months. The audio chip in particular. Everything else is solid, but audio lasts 1-10 minutes after boot before crackling and failing. No amount of roll backs and driver sweeping will fix it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please turn the power off, clear the CMOS.
Uninstall the HD audio driver.
Download and install Realtek HD audio driver at link below.
