1 out of 5 eggsDead onboard network and PCI-e

Pros: Good way to kill time, if that's your thing

Cons: Dead onboard network
Dead PCI-e

Other Thoughts: After setting up my machine and installing the OS, I found the onboard network dead. Not the first time I've seen this, but nevertheless very annoying. I tried installing the drivers that came with the motherboard which didn't help. I tried installing the drivers from the website via usb which didn't help. After searching for answers without any results, I just installed a separate network card, so I could get everything else on the machine set up.

Everything was going well until I tried to switch from the onboard video card to my installed video card. The video card in the PCI-e slot was not recognized, and I was unable to install any drivers. I tried a spare video card to see if it was video card related; this also failed.

I've sent a support request regarding my issues, but I would warn anyone looking at this motherboard in the meantime.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great board for the cost.
Safely handled an accidental short-circuit without frying (explained below).

Cons: None as far as I can tell.

Other Thoughts: No SLI option, but I hope that's obvious.

The manual said to use a 6-pin power connector in the 8-pin socket if you don't have an 8-pin that fits it. My PSU had a 6-pin that fit perfectly where it said to put it (some pins are square-shaped, so the connectors can only [presumably] be plugged in corectly). However, that caused a short-circuit which thankfully was handled safely by the board. Then I tried a 4-pin power plug which had opposite polarity wires, and it works great.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent performance and stability!

Pros: * Great component layout - plenty of space
* New BIOS update for latest Intel CPUs
* Performance has been awesome with stock settings
* Fit perfectly into a standard ATX desktop case
* Plenty of SATA connectors for tons of storage space
* BIOS is very nice and easy to use
* Great memory compatibility
* Excellent price!

Cons: * I would have liked more fan headers. There are a only few and I'm already using them all with just two case fans and the CPU cooler!
* Didn't install itself... ;)

Other Thoughts: My build:

* ASRock Z97 Pro3 LGA 1150 Intel Z97
* Intel i3-4130 Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 (Model BX80646I34130)
* 4x ADATA XPG 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 (Model AX3U1600C4G9-DR)
* SAMSUNG 840 EVO 250GB SSD (Model MZ-7TE250BW)
* Pioneer Blu-ray Burner SATA (Model BDR-209DBK)
* SAPPHIRE Radeon R9 270 2GB Video Card (Model DUAL-X 100365L)
* Cooler Master HAF 912 Mid-Tower case

4 out of 5 eggsAbout what I expected

Pros: Z97 at a reasonable price
UEFI BIOS is pretty nice
Had all the features I needed

Cons: EPS power is at the top of the board which makes it hard to hide cables in smaller cases with bottom mounted PSUs.
Only a single full length PCIe slot.
Have to reboot after switching to RAID mode to configure your drives (isn't mentioned in the manual).

Other Thoughts: Most of my cons are things that didn't effect my build at all, they're just things to think about.
The only thing that really bugged me is the reboot after switching to RAID and not having the option show up. I'm not sure if this is a BIOS issue or a chipset issue, but it was definitely frustrating until I tried it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Z board

Pros: This is a great Z board. ASRock has great reliability and I've never had an issue with the many boards I've purchased from them for myself and IT clients.

Cons: No SATA Express, but that is what the Pro 4 is for.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Looks nice, you know shiny and all.

Cons: DOA - will be seeking RMA, swapped out every other component, good thing I have multiple systems with compatible parts on hand to be able to fully eliminate every other component of the new build.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
Clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan.
Test with single memory module.
Test with onboard VGA.
Reconnect the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power.
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, basic Z97

Pros: $99 for a new Z97. Good layout.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I got it with a i7-4790K combo which knocked off $30. I had no problem plugging in the USB 3.0 cable. My Powercolor R9 280X DID NOT block the USB 3.0 connector.

5 out of 5 eggsGood motherboard for cheap but decent build

Pros: work with the latest intel chip. Blue scheme. work right out of the box. Recommend for people who use a short profile Graphic card (Read Con for more info).

Cons: Not so cheap. If you want to add a graphic card it is a little hard because the USB 3.0 connector will be in the way. Only one slot for your Graphic card to be insert.

Other Thoughts: For around couple more dollars, Get a ASRock Z97 Pro4. Pro4 has more slot for your graphic card and wireless card and such. For normal user who will be using the latest intel 4th Gen and the upcoming 5th Gen and don't need to add Graphic card. This motherboard will be okey.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat New Motherboard.

Pros: * ASRock quality and UEFI bios, both are beautiful.
* New Z97 chipset
* Handles my i4670k Haswell perfectly.

Cons: Took a risk getting a newer motherboard. 1st board sent was faulty (hence 1 egg missing). However, received a replacement and the board is working great so far.

If you plan on buying this motherboard be aware that it is super new and there are barely any reviews out there for this. Had a hard time figuring out if my motherboard was faulty or not the first time I received this board.

No SLI, but I am not using it on my build

5 out of 5 eggsVery good for the price

Pros: This is a very good deal for the latest (z97) Intel chipset. I think the board is laid out nicely and appreciate that it has 4 fan headers on the mobo. Overall, an easy build on a great board!

Cons: Not the best for SLI, but that doesn't matter to me.
