1 out of 5 eggsOne major problem

Pros: Looks nice
Feature rich
Supports 32GB of RAM
M.2 Support
UEFI BIOS

Cons: The disk performance is so bad I can't even install Windows. I've tried different SATA ports, in combination with various SSDs and spinning hard drives. After 7 hours it had barely gotten around to 5% of a Windows install. Anything trying to just detect the disk(s) takes a long time or just plain times out.

Other Thoughts: I bought this motherboard back in June 2015 since it was a good deal at the time.
It sat in the (still sealed) shipping box from NewEgg until recently when I had the extra $$ and time to complete the build.
I updated the BIOS to the latest available and that was no help. Then I rolled the BIOS back to version 1.60 to see if it would help. Nope, nada, and bupkis.
Guess I should've found some way to test it within the first 30 days.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
• Clear the CMOS.
• Load the BIOS setting default.
• Reconnect the drive.
• Try with another SATA cable and drive.
• Test with another Windows installation media.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: The reason I chose this particular unit was for running Crossfire in a micro ATX configuration, that being said, the unit has nice features, like the asrock UEFI bios. This board has nice OC features for a micro ATX size.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Running crossfire using the only 2 PCIE 3.0 slots is a tight fit. Here I was using reference R9 290 crossfire with R9 390, air flow could be a bit better.

Also, possibly due to my configurations, if power is completely off, the PCIE settings gets lost on first boot and my graphics card fans will go into 100% unless I reboot it immediately.

5 out of 5 eggsROCK SOLID

Pros: Rock Solid quality build, at this price point, tremendous value for the money. OC champ in a small footprint.

Cons: little to none, has all the essential bells and whistles that matter.

Other Thoughts: Having defected from ASUS, I now have tried 4+ OC motherboards from ASRock, two actively running now in the house. Both rock solid. As the user base realize what a bargain ASRock OC boards are, I hope firmware updates, compatibility and time to update improve even further

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost Perfect.

Pros: All Solid Caps,
6x SATA,
1x M.2,
1x SATAe,
1x eSATA,
Supports 5 SSD's or 3 SSD's and 2 HDD's,
Extremely important 8 Phase Voltage,
Good quality USB 2 and 3,
Still has the old fashioned P/S2,
Optical Audio and Analog,
3 PCIe 16x,
Black and Yellow colors,

Cons: The SATAe/SATA 4 & 5 connectors do not work when you have an M.2 drive installed.
The HD Audio header is in an incredibly odd place (in between the I/O and PCIe top slot.
To have more than one PCIe slot used you must have the molex auxiliary power plugged in.
South Bridge gets insanely hot after only a few seconds of being powered on (85C), had to reapply thermal paste myself to drop the temps.

Other Thoughts: ASRock has had a bad reputation for as long as I can remember but to be completely honest they make good products, but their support is horrible.

5 out of 5 eggsAsrock Z97M OC Formula

Pros: Booted up right out of the box, BIOS recognized RAM and M.2, plenty of fan headers, like the color, boots fast with Win 7 without fast boot enabled, plenty of USB ports, no USB conflicts when booting.

Cons: No display port, HD audio header in middle of board near IO ports, 90-degree molex connector near edge of board next to PSU area (can be a problem as some reviewers have already mentioned).

Other Thoughts: My build:

Corsair Obsidian Series 350D
Corsair RM Series RM550
Corsair Hydro Series H60
Intel Haswell i5-4690K
HyperX Fury DDR3 1866 16GB
Crucial MX200 250GB M.2 Type 2280SS
Crucial MX100 512GB 2.5" SSD

Purchased an MSI board not long ago and experienced USB conflictions causing hangups during boot, which I couldn't resolve. Switched to this Asrock board because of the decent ratings, good price, and $30 mail-in-rebate. First of all, I'm not a gamer or OC'er so I can't review what I don't know. Took the MSI board out, put this board in, booted right up and recognized all my hardware from the get go. It's only been a day since the install and loving it so far! The BIOS is well organized and I had no issues flashing the BIOS. This board boots up fast without fast boot enabled. If you do enable fast boot you'll probably have to use the Boot to UEFI Utility provided by Asrock. I plugged the H60 pump into the PWR Fan header and the fan into the CPU Fan1 header. In this manner, I can control the fan without affecting the pump. The pump runs at full speed, around 4200+rpm. CPU and board stay cool around 34C at idle. Nothing else to report. Solid experience so far and would buy Asrock again.

3 out of 5 eggslooks nice, but acts like a priss

Pros: nice use of stylish aluminum heat sinks, good packaging, works with the faster Intel CPUs. very pretty UEFI layout. fastboot is disabled by default, making it possible to get into UEFI while doing initial install

Cons: not compatible with popular M2 SSD (Samsung SSD 850EVO M.2 Sata)
not compatible with popular memory sticks (G.Skill DDR3-2400 8GB)
onboard headers and connectors in strange locations
SATA connectors facing off edge of board instead of outward and away from board

Other Thoughts: caveat emptor - read up before purchasing. I really "assumed" by now that mainstream mb's would be compatible with nearly all mainstream components - oops. ya know what they say about "assuming" ! then again, maybe this isn't a mainstream mb ?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Michael,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please update the latest BIOS at UEFI/BIOS, Tools, Internet Flash (required internet connection).
Load the BIOS setting default.

3 out of 5 eggsBad design of auxilary power connector

Pros: It has a great set of features. It has 3 full-size PCIe connectors and four memory slots and all fits into a micro-ATX form factor.

Cons: For some stupid reason if you put three cards (these weren't power-hungry video cards; two USB3 cards and a WiFi card) in the PCIe slots it requires an *additional* power connection using the old school molex connector. Why? There's already a separate PCIe power connector and the motherboard I'm replacing doesn't need anything more than that to drive the various boards so it's really lame that this MoBo won't handle it.

That's bad enough, but then they put the connector for the power supply at the edge of the board underneath one of the PCIe connectors such that there's no room between the board and the edge of the case for the power plug!

The only solution for me was to use tools to modify a standard power plug into an L shape so that it would fit. This is a seriously bad design.

Other Thoughts: I put my mobo in and routed my cables and put my drives in and got the machine running and then put my wifi card in and the BIOS gave me an error tellng me I had to hook up the auxiliary power. Then I had to disassemble everything because the fact that the power connector is badly located and angled the wrong way means you have to hook it up before you bolt the MoBo down.

So, make sure you hook up the PCIe power at the beginning!

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the money, time, effort

Pros: Looks cool. Nice GUI for the bios. That's it.

Cons: Mobo would randomly stop recognizing my other components, especially the SSDs after OS installation.

I had a build, installed mobo, set up two SSDs in a raid 0. Installed the OS. Everything worked fine for a few days. Within a week the mobo would start giving me errors on one of the SSDs. Errors turned into the mobo not recognizing one of the SSDs entirely. Since this is a raid 0 I would have to reinstall everything.

I have 10 SSDs, all same size and model. Removed bad one, installed a replacement. Again installed OS, ran fine for a few days. Again one of the SSDs would throw errors then would stop being recognized. I changed out the SSDs, cables, and SATA ports on the mobo. Applied bios update.

Final time tried to get the mobo working. Again, setup raid 0 and OS install. Again, a few days later errors followed by drive recognition failure. At this point I rotated six SSDs which worked fine in my other systems.

Now I had two choices, spin the wheel and hope that AS Rock's support could assist me or return to newegg. As the time frame for a refund was running out I returned it to newegg.

Other Thoughts: Really not worth it. Other reviews have stated the problems they have had. Given the frequency of negative reviews I'd recommend steering clear of this. I ended up going with a brand I'm more familiar with, MSI. No problems with the new board. Fifteen years of building PCs (and servers) and have never had a problem out of box. Thanks for breaking that cherry AS Rock.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggs1st DOA. 2nd Great Board

Pros: Tons of features. Stable overclock on 4790k. Nice look.

Cons: 1st board "might" have been DOA. Needs more fan headers.

Other Thoughts: Bought an HP 750se w/4790k. At the price I paid, I gutted it and built a new computer. Bought this MB and a XFX core 750 PSU from newegg. Nothing worked. Tried PSU from HP which was known to work. Still nothing. Bought PS tester from a river in South America. XFX PSU turned out bad. Newegg replaced. Got the new MB and PSU from newegg and crossed my fingers. Both worked. I dont know if PSU fried MB or MB fried PSU, or bad products on both sides. I do know that I filed me rebate with the UPCs from each product backwards(I blanked up). I do know, Asrock had a PERSON answer the phone. She had my FULL rebate documentation sent back to me so I could refile. Their product is quality and so is their support.

5 out of 5 eggsVery stable OC board

Pros: OC options
Price
color
Hemmed and hawed a lot about buying this. I had a used g3258 that I got for $32 and was torn between making a super cheap but nice system with stock fan and H81 board or seeing how much I could OC this baby. I could not resist and glad I chose this board.
At $95 net after rebate, I think its a great buy. I have never tried OC on a nice board before. What a difference. I got the g3258 to 4.9 and could have got to 5.0 if I knew how to OC better. With this board there are so many options, a more experienced OCer could easily have gone past 5.0. Set OC to 4.5 @ stock voltage for everyday/gaming use.
I was unsure of the color but actually like it now. Have blue ram and it looks nice.
I also took the plunge and tried out an m.2 SSD. Evo 850. Easy as PI and no wires!! Booted right up and installed windows 10 from USB, no issues at all.
Plenty os decent features, no outdated tech and thunderbolt ready! for $95! Buy this!

Cons: none
