4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great interfaces M2
Up to 4 slots PCIe 3x16
Looks good

Cons: Price
A-Tuning software

Other Thoughts: Almost 2 weeks ago I sent a request to you (Asrock) over the technical support form – using your website, however I still have not received any comment/reply. Perhaps if I will state my request via this respectable portal I will finally will get the answers for some very important to me an issues according to the operational matters of the Extreme 9 which I poses.
First of all when I am trying to install the win7 64 bit on the Samsung XP941 512 GB there is no chance to do it and during the installation process while I am trying to set up the partitions. The warning is displaying: “…the system cannot be run from this disc. Check if SATA controller in the BIOS is turned on” – but when I have been installing win7 in UEFI mode (GPT mode of partitioning) this case does not happen and the installation is going well- is it concerns to, that using BIOS mode (MBR mode of partitioning) the system cannot set up partitions automatically by itself on this type of disk/interface but it can do in UEFI mode? Is there any chance to install win7 using standard BIOS mode (MBR) on this disk? In the UEFI the configuration of M2 controller has been set on Auto or Forced to PCIe Gen 3_4 – and this did not work.

Secondly: Is there any guidance what to change/set in BIOS/UEFI settings to install win7 on the Samsung XP941 placed into M2 – 32 GB interface?

According above request – there is some troubles with launching the win7. From time to time (lets say 2 on 10 times) when I turn on the desktop the statement appears: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key" and when I click ctrl + alt + del quickly on the same time the win7 starts up. Why is that?

And the last problem perhaps meaningless however for that price and such a motherboard everything should be tip top – when I plug in the fan (Prolimatech Vortex Ultra Sleek 140 mm 4 pin PWM) to the socket CHA_FAN1 it cannot be stopped at any way no matter if I do this in the UEFI directly or using the A Tunning software – it is always operating on the slowest rpm but still cannot be stopped.
Is it the motherboard failure?
Desktop configuration: Motherboard z97 Extreme 9, CPU – i7 4790 K, 16 GB RAM Kingston Savage 1866 MHz. SSD – Samsung XP941, Graphics card MSI 970 GTX.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

Thank you for purchase and review.
The Samsung XP941 or SM951 required installing Windows with UEFI mode due to it does not come with POST firmware.
However, Windows 8/8.1 support UEFI mode by native but Windows 7 comes with legacy mode.
Please download and update the latest BIOS at link below.
Try with Windows 8/8.1 with UEFI mode.
Note: Start the system, press F11 to bring boot menu, choose your drive "UEFI: your Windows 8/8.1 installation drive".

5 out of 5 eggsThis Mobo is a BEAST

Pros: I bought this because it has dual PCIe 16 slots that will run 16 x 16 with two video cards installed. I know many show that it doesn't matter but this was a sticking point for me. At a lower cost than competitors for the same specs, I was really hoping this board would work out for me.

First build, and ran into RAM issues which made me really worried I got a bad board like others have posted about. But after switching the RAM and getting the system cranking, I'm very happy this mobo is working great and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I hope to check in later down the line and keep the rep high as to offset some of the other weak claims by others who bring the rating down on this product.

Cons: None so far...

4 out of 5 eggsWe go sailing down the calming 'xtreme

Pros: It's a decent board. Overclocks my 2400 Mhz RAM like a boss. Software is much improved. 4790K is humming along @ 4.7 Ghz.. I can boot with some stability to 5 Ghz, probably higher I haven't tried.Depth of field and blur in BIOS? Nice...I think.

Cons: None really... one star off because I missed the rebate window.

Other Thoughts: I've been with mostly ASUS boards and for overclocking this board is the best, esp. with RAM. I've never OC'd my 2400 Mhz RAM to 2600 Mhz but this board can do it. Color matches my RAM and looks decent in a white case with black interior. Chocolate covered macadamias are wonderful.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome, feature packed board

Pros: Met all the requirements that I needed in a board
Lots of room for SLI
Plentiful USB3 connections
Packaged nicely

Cons: The only thing that I'm having trouble with is the audio path lighting. For some reason the lighting that shows the separation between digital and analog sides of the board doesn't work. I figured it was something that required activating in the BIOS, but I couldn't find anything for that. I'm not really staring at my computer all the time anyways, so it's not a big deal at all.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks good

Pros: This board is loaded to the teeth.
Nice bios look and nav..
Ultra m.2 was easy to setup a boot drive.
Update bios from in the bios.

Cons: None so far 3 weeks in.

Other Thoughts: To you guys havering problems with the board clear the bios 1st then don't change any setting go strait to tools and update the bios (make sure your network cable is pluged in) 90% of the boards that are sent back to newegg and sold as open box there is nothing wrong with it's not clearing the CMOS and wrong setting in bios and vary seldom hardware that's it incompatible

2 out of 5 eggsUpdated review

Pros: Can't ask for more features really
Fully packed and the most unique board with a PLX chip and PCIe Gen3 4x M.2 slot for upcoming SSD.

Despite the cons below which are mainly a mix of REAL BAD LUCK, mail in rebates time restriction and UPC code removal negating the warranty with NewEgg. I think this board is worth at least 3 eggs, probably 4 but... just read below.

Cons: 2 DIMM slots on the left are dead. Error code 55.

Tried a total of 8 memory module individually in each slot one at a time along with 3 different CPU, my main 4790K, and 2 other I5, multiple clear CMOS.

Whatever I try I get a 100% running and stable system when using the 2 far right DIMM slots and no post / error code 55 with the 2 far left.

Made a 10-15min close up inspection of the CPU pins and everything is fine. All other memory modules are all working in 2 other system and memtest error free.

Since I was waiting for my defect memory to come back from NewEgg, I had to send my mail in rebate for the mobo in time! When my new 32Go kit returned, all stick were error free but discovered the mobo had problem too. And because I sent the rebate to ASRock, I couldn't RMA the board with NewEgg but I have to deal with ASRock.

RMA is open but even tho I told ASRock I can work with 16GB single channel, they don't offer cross ship or advance payment. I personally think all company should offer at least an advance payment option.

Other Thoughts: Out of my order consisting of this mobo, G.Skill 32Go kit 2400Mhz C10, Gelid Thermal paste, 4 x 140mm fan and a blue ray / dvd burner, I got a defect memory kit and a defect board.

I guess I got extremely unlucky! Although there's a lot of DOA reviews for the memory kit (Maybe 25-30%).... but having 2 DOA on the same order is a 1st time for me..... At least my LG Blue Ray, 4 fans and Thermal Paste are working!! :/

RMA for the memory was ok, got a full refund for it while I had ordered a new in the meantime.
But I'm dissapointed ASRock does not offer cross ship or advancement payment. This is crippling me for a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks... Although I can say they responded to my email REALLY FAST.

Carefull of the mail-in rebates.... IMO 10$ ones are not worth it... It will cost you the printing, time consuming just to read everything to make sure your eligible, pay X to send it (roughly 2$) and you loose your warranty with NewEgg cause of the UPC code cutted. Mine was 40$ rebates... money wise it's worth it, but look where it got me.
I could have got full refund for this defect and order a new one for a 2-3day downtime.

UPDATES:

ASRock does not service in Canada but uses service of Link Computer

RMA is a pain although it's not Link Computer's fault, Canada Post lost my motherboard... I actually took Xpress with basic insurance and signature... It got signed by someone Link Computer does not recognize. The basic insurance only covers 100$. The investigation takes up to 5 days and it's been 6 now... They only contacted my to ask if I took additional insurance and that a representative will contact me soon. So yeah I basically just lost 250$ + all the shipping fee here and there, 16 cubic tons of emails... and still 1 month after my initial purchase, I have yet to make that 2500$ PC up and running! I just hope NewEgg hear me and at the bare minimum offer me free shipping and maybe a discount... as I now have a new Motherboard to buy + additional 140mm fans, 250$ Sennheiser headset (In the meantime, I bought a Sennheiser PC363D full retail 319$ + tx on another trusted site only to realize they sent me a refurbished, with 90days limited warranty in USA only... (Hell Yeah!... frustration sarcasm). I'm in the process of refund but I still lost at least 75$ with all the shipping back of DOAs and Refurb...

Not only I'm loosing so much, this huge pile of bad luck, I tell you! is taking at least 30% of my time every week with back and fourth emails, photo taken, follow ups....

I can tell you this is the first and last ASRock board and also the last time I send mail in rebate!

Made some research and I'll probably go with the Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming G1. It has about all the same feature + gold plated on every I/Os and CPU pins + better onboard sound (Best I've seen for onboard) + the additional marvel Sata support Raid so I get to run 850Pro on Intel AHCI. I loose the M.2 but I'll simply buy a PCIe M.2 card and networ

1 out of 5 eggsbad board 3

Pros: none

Cons: bad power switch led header

Other Thoughts: I wish I did not buy wifi card for the board, now I don't have anything to put it in

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
All 3 x mainboards have been received from returned.
Run the test on mainboards (3 x), power LED header 2 pins and 3 pins are working normally.
They light up right away once connect the chassis LED connector.
The problem could be either chassis LED or connected position.
For more information about header connection, please visit the link below for user manual under page 21, front system panel header layout.
ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/Z97%20Extreme9.pdf

However, power LED header (positive and negative) is a very basic technology and should not be having the problem.
As always, we appreciate your purchase and constructive reviews are welcome.

1 out of 5 eggsSevere PCIE and audio problems

Pros: Good layout. Aesthetically pleasing BIOS.

Cons: After 2 weeks of problem-free use, minor sound and DPC latency issues presented themselves-- at 3 weeks, this became a major problem (causing audio dropouts and system freezes) which at first appeared to be a possible DPC latency issue which would normally be caused by a bad driver. In response, I updated, reinstalled, and rolled back all current drivers from the manufacturer's and other websites; restored and reinstalled windows 8.1, and loaded w/ BIOS 1 and 2. The only way I was able to eliminate the DPC latency issue was to not use any PCIE x16 slots, but doing so would somehow disable audio through the onboard HDMI completely.

Also, I attempted to use an SSD (PX-AG256M6e) which had been listed as a supported device on the manufacturer's website (apparently this was incorrectly listed, and has subsequently been changed to the appropriate part number (PX-G256M6e) after I contacted ASRock customer service). This was also a PCIE x16 slot card, and the mobo would not POST while this was installed, which seems as a secondary indicator that the mobo's PCIE slots were faulty.

Finally, getting the mobo to recognize boot devices was also a pain. It would only recognize two at any given time, and sometimes it would take a couple of posts for it to recognize the change. So if you wanted to swap drives, you would have to manually disconnect everything else and repost until the boot devices you wanted finally showed up.

Other Thoughts: ASRock customer service was a bit slow in its response to my initial query (2 days) concerning the SSD with the incorrect part number. They asked me to repeat information which i had already given, suggested that I modify the device (which would void the manufacturers warranty), and then failed to respond to my second query. This delayed my return of that part.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please turn power off, clear the CMOS.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Mobo

Pros: This board has pretty much every connection possible with Z97, and a PLX PEX, which is great if you need more than 16 pcie lanes.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I am using this board with 2 GFX in SLI and a third for PhysX without any issues. Also, I have both M.2 slots populated (Plextor M6e and Samsung XP941), no problems there either.

For those curious, the x2 M.2 slot does share bandwidth with 2 of the SATA ports, but the x4 M.2 does not share with SATA (my understanding is that there is a second smaller PEX PLX chip in front of the one used for the pcie lanes and its sole function is to pipe 4 pcie lanes to the M.2 x4 slot and the other 12 to the pcie slots).

Also, for those looking to get the XP941, at least on my system it boots about 5 seconds slower than the M6e, despite being quite a bit faster. I'm not sure if one of my settings is off or what, but either way it is an unexpected result.
