5 out of 5 eggsAwesome low power firewall board

Pros: Takes standard desktop memory
Several slots the ITX version does not have.
sips power

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: I put this in an extra case with an Intel Quad port NIC I already had. Made a great 20w PFsense firewall.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value for money, fast and reliable

Pros: Running Opensuse 13.2 linux, no problems with integrated graphics driver. Ample horsepower for my home computer. Much better for Linux than my AMD E1-2100 passive cooled motherboard which was slow and crashed daily. This MB can do about anything. With 2 x 8Gb of RAM it never runs out of memory. It has USB3,. PCI, PCIe, COM, & Parport! This allow you to use legacy hardware and peripherals.

Cons: Only 2 memory slots. My whole system is dissipating 28W which is more than I expected.

Other Thoughts: My system draw 28W which is more than I expected. I have 2x8GB RAM so that is 5W,. the HDD is another 5W, still 10W more power than I expected. I need a SSD drive to lower the power.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None

Cons: Board was DOA

Other Thoughts: I was excited to try this board out based on the mostly good reviews here, but mine arrived DOA. ASRock tech support would not respond to my help requests either. Looks like I'll be avoiding their products in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Benny ,

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
We do reply both email and phone promptly except week-end and holidays
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
• Unplug the ATX power, remove all components from mainboard.
• Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
• Clear the CMOS.
• Test with single memory module on A1 slot.
• Test with onboard video.
• Connect the monitor.
• Plug the 24 pins ATX power.
• Connect the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again.

If you have any technical support inquiry, please contact us at 909-590-8308 or http://www.ASRock.com/Support/tsd.asp
We will assist you shortly.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsIt's just a baby, but baby got wings!

Pros: Silent and cool operation from a quad core.
Low price for motherboard/processor combo.
PCI-Express capabilities.
Dual-Channel Ram.
Low-power consumption.

Cons: PCI-Express 16x slot is 2.0 and really 1x.
Only 2 Sata ports.
Ram surrounds CPU cooler, cutting some airflow to it.

Other Thoughts: So really, I wanted to do this review to see if this board would be worth having a video card in it for gaming. I did 3D mark with the onboard Intel HD graphics and one with an AMD 7750 (no external power and low profile). The power consumption went from ~30w to ~70w peak during this test in my rig.

Test - Onboard Score - +7750 score
Firestrike 1.1 - 171 - 1905
Skydiver 1.0 - 600 - 5610
Cloudgate 1.1 - 1604 - 5709
Ice Storm 1.2 - 18985 - 37482

The physics score was rather uneffected, but the graphics scores went up considerably. Skydiver went from a slideshow to a near-smooth experience. Firestrike, however, was still pretty rough. Reglardless, even with only 1x operation, it seems a video card is worth it if you want to attempt to game from the awesome little J1900, as it struggles with video performance.

I'm using a Silverstone ML04 (with 4x Enermax Enobal fans turned down), older Sandisk SSD, Older OCZ Power Supply, Pioneer Blu-ray player, and some cheap Nanya 667mhz ram I had laying around. Idle takes less than 20 watts and, outside of the power supply fan, it's dead silent. Going to use this for a HTPC, but figured I'd experiment as a gaming computer as I've used the J1900 in the Gigabyte Brix for Steam Streaming. Saw the J1900 in that was getting bottle-necked by the processors poor video performance in local gaming, so figured it was worth a quick test on this board to see how well a vid card would help. Won't be keeping the video card in this box as the J1900 can stream just fine, but hopefully this little review helps somebody.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for MythTV FE/BE setup

Pros: Low power and still has two PCI slots.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I used this to replace the parts on a HTPC setup that I have been running for seven years. The parts that came out were a 95 watt CPU board and a video card. The new board installed Ubuntu 14.04 and MythTV .27 with no problems. I did have to play with the X settings to add the proper resolution for my flat screen in VGA connection mode. It detected properly with the HDMI connection. I am using the onboard video and sound with an older ATI HD Wonder tuner and a cheap PCI wifi card out of the old HTPC.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: -Great Point of Sale or HTPC(tested 1080p video).
-2 PCI and 2 PCIe slots
-DVI port
-Good Windows 7 Drivers (Vista drivers tested as well)
-Runs Cool
-No ATX 12V power required(4pin power)
-Getting 2x performance on CPU SQL reindex over the Atom N2800 process

Cons: -No working DOS network drivers for imaging yet
-Only 2 pin header for power light
-One of the onboard usb headers is for one usb port(weird) and the other is a standard 2 usb port
-Wish it had more USB ports or headers(have to purchase separate PCI or PCIe usb cards)
-One two SATA connections(four would be nice but saved on not using CD/DVD)

Other Thoughts: We are using this board for a point of sale computer and the vga, parallel, serial ports, and ps2 are required for backward compatibility if customers have older non-usb equipment. The heat sink run cool and I've order 15 of these so far with no issues with DOA out of the box. We'll see how long they hold up. If I don't update this review with more feedback I would consider this a good board.
