High Density Glass Fabric PCB

What you’ve never understood about your computer is that it is scared to death of water, H2O, humidity or whatever you’d like to name it. And even though you do not see the water, actually there may be lots of excessive moist in the air killing your motherboard silently and slowly. No, your motherboard doesn’t melt when in contact with water like the wicked witch of the west, but it dies of short circuit. Luckily, ASRock has a new High Density Glass Fabric PCB design that reduces the gaps between the PCB layers to protect the motherboard against electrical shorts caused by humidity.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: - good features
- Intel network (no terrible KILLER garbage here)

Cons: - ram banks too close together
- not quite full size so the board doesn't get enough support from the case

Other Thoughts: I bought this to use with GSKILL TridentZ RAM, which has wide heatsinks. It's quite snug on this board. My personal feeling is that the board should have been a little bigger with my space between the RAM banks.

3 out of 5 eggsBad Ram Slots

Pros: OK for the price.
Functional

Cons: - two RAM slots didn't work on my board

Other Thoughts: When I initially purchased this board, I was very impressed. Its feature set when compared against its cost seems like a great value. However, I was on a budget and was only about to purchase one RAM stick. I installed the RAM in to slot B2 and everything worked fine. A while later I purchased a second RAM stick of the same type and model as the first. I installed the second RAM stick in to slot A2, and turned on the computer. Nothing. A blank screen. Thinking maybe I had bad RAM stick or that RAM NEEDED to be purchased in kits (which was never a thing btw, so long as you use the same type and model, it shouldn't matter) I decided to test both RAM sticks in each individual slot. What I discovered was that the computer wouldn't post if RAM was socketted in to slots A1 and A2. That means no dual channel for me. I tried everything I could think of, from seating and reseating the RAM (which has a really odd mounting structure) to updating the bios. Nothing. Those two ram slots are dead. Both RAM sticks are socketted in slots B1 and B2 without issue at the moment. I simply do not have the time nor the inclination to go through to process of replacing the board. It would cost me more money than its worth, but I will say that I will be very careful with purchases from ASRock in the future

I am giving this 3 eggs because as it stands I do have two functional RAM slots, and the board is technically working. Hell, without my RAM slot issue, I'd go so far as to say that this board is amazing. But the fact that I can't use this board to its full advertised potential is why I chose to dock it 2 eggs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Morgan,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
• Clear the CMOS.
• Check the mainboard’s CPU contact pins are normal (should be pointing same way and pattern).
• Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan if socket pins are normal.
• Test with single memory module on each memory slot one by one to verify all slots are working.
• Populate the memory if all slots are working individually.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent MOBO for the price!

Pros: LOVE THIS BOARD!! Got it on sale also!! Paired this MOBO with Skylake i5 6500m with the specific purpose of saving money and being able to OC the CPU.
Plenty of space for everything. Have successfully OC Skylake i5 6500 to 4.5MHz! Had to increase voltage to 1.395 (max MOBO will let set).

Cons: Board is a tad flimsy. Be careful plugging in.....
Latest BIOS just killed the Sky OC function, effectively making this board just another MOBO....

3 out of 5 eggsInexpensive, but you get what you pay for

Pros: Good features for the price. Clear manual.

Cons: Persistent compatibility errors with the graphics card despite updating all software and adjusting all applicable BIOS settings. (All components worked fine when moved to another MB.)

Other Thoughts: I don't know if this was something wonky with my system setup, or a short-circuit or other defect in the MB. I ended up buying a slightly more expensive MB from a more established manufacturer - I wish I had done that from the start.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jason,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the future reference, please contact us or trouble shoot the mainboard steps below whether the issue is resolved.
• Please update the latest BIOS (UEFI/BIOS, Tools, Internet Flash).
• Load the BIOS setting default.
• If problem still persist, please adjust the PCIE link speed to Gen1 or 2 at BIOS, Advanced, Chipset Configuration.

3 out of 5 eggsSo far so..

Pros: -Running for a few hours on 3.00 BIOS, i5-6400 @ 4ghz+ w/ an H60 cooler, 16gb of 3200, intel SSD.. life is good. + 8 eggs!

Cons: -Upon installation I somehow miraculously noticed the chip-sets thermal bonding to the heatsink was loose and could see light all the way across! Had to wobble it around to get it to stick. - 3 eggs

-Just paid 109.99 and its down to 79.99 the day it arrived. - 2 eggs

3 out of 5 eggsSolid, But Some Major Flaws

Pros: Easy to setup and update the UEFI since the board has it's own networking drivers built into the firmware. Updating to the latest firmware took only a few minutes after powering on the system for the first time. UEFI has a lot of options for tweaking, and even a feature that lets you report bugs. Honestly, it performs like it should and the software works (mostly).

Cons: The board does not meet ATX specs for width, so if you have a full ATX case ( I have a full ATX Thermaltake Commander), you're not going to be able to secure the right edge of the motherboard. This is troublesome for several reasons, the most important of which is that the main motherboard power connector is on that side and so are the 0/1 SATA ports. That's a lot of pressure to have to put on a part of the board you can't secure to the case.

The UEFI interface crashes a lot, forcing a hard reset of the system if you're in it. Additionally, the UEFI interface comes with a very ugly skin that you can't change.

This board only supports up to two chassis fans that can be controlled by the motherboard. There IS a third chassis fan header, but it isn't configurable in the UEFI, which means the third fan will always run at full speed. Also, three is it. If you have any more chassis fans than that, you'll have to use MOLEX adapters.

Other Thoughts: I really hope that ASRock releases some more UEFI updates. The crashes need to be fixed and if you have a mouse with LEDs, the LEDs won't turn off when you power the system down. I had a previous motherboard where this was fixed with a firmware upgrade, so I know it's something ASRock can fix.

This is my second ASRock motherboard and it will probably be my last. There are just too many things about this board that shouldn't be the way they are.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jonathan,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For mounting near power connector, the plastic motherboard standoffs could be used. However, its not certainly needed.
It can be used finger to support from bottom while connecting ATX power connector.

For the mouse LEDs won't turn off, mainboard is designed for USB devices charging while shutdown.
Please set the Deep Sleep Enable S4/S4 in the BIOS.
UEFI/BIOS, Advanced, Chipset Configuration, Deep Sleep [Enable S4/S5].
Note: This will disable USB devices charging.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Motherboard for the price. Highly Recommend this board.

Pros: Board seems to be pretty solid for the price. Would recommend if you want something in the middle price range. Not to cheap and not to expensive . I installed an I5-6500 3.2GHZ Skylake processor and 16 GB of HyperX FURY 8GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Desktop Memory Model HX421C14FB/8 with this board and had no issues.

Cons: No Issues except for the LAN adapter drivers. Running Server 2012 R2 and had to load the driver manually for the Intel LAN. Work perfectly after loading the driver manually.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet bang for your buck!

Pros: recognised gskill ddr4 3200 fine, i5 6400 easily overclocked to a stable 4.3ghz with Sky Of Bios. I was also able to get the ram timings down from 16-18-18-38 to 14-15-15-28. no errors, never bsoded or froze even after hours of stress testing, pretty solid board for its price!

Cons: nothing yet.

Other Thoughts: This is an awesome board if you're looking to build a cost effective powerhouse. I see it's even on sale since I purchased it.

5 out of 5 eggsLooks like a solid motherboard

Pros: quality construction
great features for the price
simple, straightforward BIOS menu

Cons: Like the reviewer above me, I had to reset the CMOS before my computer started. Apart from this, I haven't seen any cons so far, the board has done what it is supposed to do and is stable. will update this post if something happens to the motherboard
