High Density Glass Fabric PCB

What you’ve never understood about your computer is that it is scared to death of water, H2O, humidity or whatever you’d like to name it. And even though you do not see the water, actually there may be lots of excessive moist in the air killing your motherboard silently and slowly. No, your motherboard doesn’t melt when in contact with water like the wicked witch of the west, but it dies of short circuit. Luckily, ASRock has a new High Density Glass Fabric PCB design that reduces the gaps between the PCB layers to protect the motherboard against electrical shorts caused by humidity.

3 out of 5 eggsAppeared to be DOA, but not

Pros: The board has a nice feature set, looks great, and was easy to set up.

Cons: Appeared to be DOA. The power supply fan wouldn't even spin up. Based on the previous review that mentioned replacing the CMOS battery, I checked mine. It was fine, just over 3V. Leaving the battery out for a few minutes (with the power off) did, however, make it start right up!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
• Unplug the ATX power, remove all components from mainboard.
• Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
• Clear the CMOS.
• Check the mainboard’s CPU contact pins are normal (should be pointing same way and pattern).
• Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan if socket pins are normal.
• Test with single memory module.
• Test with onboard video.
• Connect the monitor.
• Plug the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power.
• Connect the chassis power switch to mainboard.
• Turn on the power to check if its post.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to build and configure

Pros: High quality impression, well made. Easily mounted in my case. Instructions very good, with clear illustrations of the various sockets and plugs on the board. I had no trouble finding where to connect things.

At boot, it was easy to get into the BIOS and - with a network cable connected - was able to download the latest firmware update and apply it right there. Best BIOS upgrade experience I've had. I'm not a tweaker/overclocker - I prefer stability and this is for a work machine - so I left the advanced settings alone but easily the nicest BIOS I've seen.

Cons: There are six SATA III plugs on the board. SATA0 and SATA1 are single-stack; the others are double-stack, i.e. they rise vertically off the board so SATA2 and SATA3 are in one stack, and SATA4 and SATA5 are also. This is really only an issue with lots of cabling or if (like me) you prefer to use right-angle plugs (can't here), no big deal otherwise.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if it's the board or Windows 10. My Windows 10 (1511) build runs with Hyper-V, as I need that for work, and I have experienced a small number of hard locks during boot-up, as well as one total freeze just working normally. This is a bit annoying; if it keeps up I may try to get rid of Hyper-V and see if that fixes it.

5 out of 5 eggsI purchased using the configurator for use with i5-6500, DDR4 2100, GTX960, SSD, 1TB HD, Corsair power supply.

Pros: Set up was simple and sweet.

Cons: I don't have any cons.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this MB to others assembling a system.

5 out of 5 eggsBuilt with quality and looks great...

Pros: I researched (majorly OCD) the motherboard scene to get a home workstation for programming. I started with 2011v3 sockets, but getting the right price combination was difficult. I finally decided on the 1151 socket, but I also wanted to keep the cost down. This motherboard is sold at a great price for the features I wanted.
- Top build quality and sturdy
- Black motherboard
- Copper colored heat sinks look great
- M.2 that is bootable
- Display port for 4K graphics, driven by the skylake (no gaming, but a large 40" 4K display)
- Intel lan port
- Upto 64GB RAM
- Great price/value

Cons: I struggled with getting a specific version of Linux to boot so I am unsure if it was the MB or me. :) Nonetheless it's working after a few hours of tweaking. :/

Other Thoughts: For me, this is intended for programming and normal home computing. With the right case, this would be great for a HTPC. Very happy with this MB for the price. AsRock is definitely listening to its customers.

Thanks for all that provide constructive reviews. Very helpful.

3 out of 5 eggsBuilt a budget gaming rig

Pros: - price

Cons: - Had a lot of trouble getting Windows 7 installed. After the frustration of getting Windows 7 up and running, I didn't have the patience to wait for updates to download. Instead, I immediately went with the free upgrade to Windows 10.
- Issued RMA for the 1st H170M Pro4 I bought. The computer sometimes would not boot. The fans would turn on and stay running, but the status lights would go out. So far so good with the replacement.
- The VGA connector seems really flimsy. It moves a lot when I connect the cable.

Other Thoughts: Got a kick out of the manual, which directs you to remove the cap covering the CPU socket after the CPU has been locked in place. Forcing the lock pin down without first removing the cap would be a bad idea. I'd have a hard time recommending this product to anyone else.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the Windows 7, because of Windows 7 does not build-in USB drivers for Intel 100 series chipset, it needs to adjust BIOS setting or patch the USB drivers to Windows 7 installation media.
However, Windows 8/8.1/10 does not have this issue.

Please visit link below for Windows 7 Installation Guide on Intel 100 series.

ONE OF THE SATA CONNECTORS DOES NOT WORK
NO OUTPUT FROM HDMI ON BOARD, DOES NOT WORK

Other Thoughts: THE ULTRA M.2 INTERFACE IS GREAT AND REASON I BOUGHT THIS MOBO. THEY SHOULD DESIGN M.2 SO THE ARE STACKABLE ONE OVER THE OTHER ON BOARD WITH MODULAR CLIP ON CONNECTORS!!!!!

1 out of 5 eggsWoe to those who choose this

Pros: haven't found any yet

Cons: - no usb support during windows install
- after windows install most of the board features not recognized
- ugh

Other Thoughts: This was my first venture into Intel from AMD... I regret it completely.. this board does not recognize usb mouse or keyboard during windows install, even after install you need a patch to make them work. What the heck? Also, after install of win 7 i needed to find drivers using another computer and put them on a usb drive to get most of the features of this board to work. I have built many PCs in my time and this was by far the most painful. Shouldn't these things get better with time?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zach,

Thank you for purchase and review.
Due to Windows 7 has no USB index drivers for Intel 100 series USB keyboard and mouse may not be worked during Windows 7 installation.

3 out of 5 eggsNot as good as its predecessor H97M Pro4

Pros: It's simple and it works.

Cons: I am taking two eggs off because this motherboard ONLY HAS ONE USABLE FAN HEADER, Seriously?

Yeah, Only one usable fan header on this entire motherboard in 2016. So if your CPU aftermarket cooler needs two connections (which is pretty common, since most all-in-one liquid cooling requires one for the pump and one or more for the fans) you are stuck until you find some adapters, Let's not forget about case fans either.

The second header conflicts with just about any two slot high end video card because it's in the way. Even with the lowest profile plug, It prevents the video card from sitting into its slot.

Other Thoughts: Put two extra fan headers on this board and I will consider giving it 5 eggs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

Thank you for purchase and review.
Mainboard has 3 x fan headers.
1 x CPU and 2 x chassis headers.
However, most of the micro ATX boards has similar fan headers as well.

1 out of 5 eggsStability issues with M.2 NVMe drive

Pros: Great features and specs, at least on paper.

Cons: I tried to use this board with a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 as a boot drive. I had tons of stability issues, despite using the Samsung-provided driver. No idea whether they were because of ASRock, the drive, or the fact that NVMe is a new technology. Just to be safe, I returned the board and purchased one from another major brand.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Mainboard supports NVME M.2 drive.
Please update the latest BIOS at UEFI/BIOS, Tools, Internet Flash (required internet connection).
For the stable issue, please load the BIOS setting default.
Test with single memory module.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat mATX base for a Skylake HTPC build

Pros: - Stable
- All drivers worked well

Cons: - None. Did my research and knew what I was getting coming into the purchase.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to update to latest stable BIOS when you receive the board. Ethernet is active in BIOS so you can download and run the update without needing to boot from USB or into an OS.
HTPC build:
* ASRock H170M Pro4 mATX
* Intel i5-6500
* G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 8GB DDR4 2400
* Silverstone GD05B mATX HTPC case
* SilverStone Argon AR06 CPU cooler
* (2) GELID FN-PX08-20 80mm case fans for exhaust
