Digital music appliance or internet gateway? You make the choice. VIA's EPIA-EK10000G has dual Fast Ethernet ports making it an ideal buffer system between your network and the cold, hard internet. There are plenty of storage options with 2 PATA and 2 SATA interface allowing you to attach up to 6 drives making it a great server unit.
Of course it will work well as the basis for a stand alone system as well. The VIA UniChrome IGP Pro graphics processor with MPEG-2/4 hardware decoding acceleration enables smooth playback and transmission of digital media. The VIA Vinyl VT1618 6-channel audio with VIA Smart5.1 Surround sound provide an exemplary aural experience.
Hardware security is available too, with the VIA PadLock Security Engine. Designed to offer real-time military-grade protection of data stored and exchanged, the VIA PadLock Security Engine enables developers to offload the computational process involved in complex encryption algorithms, freeing processor loading to handle more data faster. Make what you can imagine!
Greatest VPN server mobo but no docs
This review is from: VIA / VPSD EPIA-EK10000G 1.0GHz VIA Luke CoreFusion Processor Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo
Pros: This is one fantastic motherboard for use as a Linux-based network appliance (especially anything involving cryptography, like IPSEC, OpenSSH, OpenVPN, etc). This is because of the wonderful CPU - the VIA Luke CoreFusion. If you haven't read about it, go to Via's website, and read about the Padlock extensions (which gives you MUCH accelerated AES encryption). I would've preferred a VIA C7-based mobo, but this was the best with 2 NICs. This mobo has everything I needed: SATA, PATA, sound, video, 2 NICs, USB galore, etc. I'm very happy.
Cons: Look at the picture of the product. See that VIA Embedded platform manual. Guess what - it's USELESS aside from doing a good job of showing you where to plug in the case LEDs. It doesn't show you where to put any of the other connectors, unfortunately. Therefore, I can't recommend this to anyone who can't put together a modern machine without the mobo manual.
Other Thoughts: All in all, a wonderful, solid product. I have been able to transfer files over my 100Mbps LAN with AES crypto enabled 95% as quickly as I can transfer them with no encryption at all - and with fairly low CPU load. It seems that the two main purposes of this product are multimedia playback and network appliance. Just remember, if you want multimedia, expect to run Windows. If you want a network appliance without graphics, linux works like a dream. Just make sure you get a distro with OpenSSL 0.9.8 or later, or you'll need to patch a lot of things to get the Padlock acceleration.
