5 out of 5 eggsgreat board

Pros: I've had this board for 3 months now, using the D950 CPU. It is a great board, nice and thick too so it won't warp over time to keep a heavy CPU cooler in place. Lightning fast. It has everything a man could want for his high end small business needs.

Cons: I wish it had another usable PCI e slot and not just for graphics cards. I would like to see more frequent bios updates that are available to give a feeling Supermicro is keeping up with the changing tech times. No one wants to feel they are getting old technology.

Other Thoughts: I'm looking forward to see what Supermicro comes out with for Intel's Conroe in the 3rd quarter of 2006.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: this is a fairly complete entry level server/workstation board. the only think missing would be a PCIe x4 slot. i put in 1GB crucial unbuffered ECC RAM and a $xx CeleronD 336. It is a nice performing server. No bandwidth bottlenecks yet!

Cons: with a two-HDD striped array i average 40% gigabit throughput (transferring both ways). i was expecting more. oh well. i have a netgear 16 port gigabit switch and the destination machine has a RAID-5 array.

Other Thoughts: this is a very well designed board. i installed it in a supermicro 743i series case. like peas in a pod. i just wish it had PCIe x4 slot to futureproof a new high speed I/O cards.

the "overclock" function works well for my CeleronD 336. it AUTOMATICALLY increases voltage for northbridge, vDimm, and CPU. User does not have a say in any voltage or multiplier, just FSB frequency. i added an aftermarket CPU cooler and have the machine running at 166MHz FSB, or something like 3.49GHz :o)

i didnt like the SuperO monitoring software. installed MBM5 and used the config for the supermicro board "X5DA8"...reads all the correct temps so i'm happy.

5 out of 5 eggsVoltage and Temp Software

Pros: Excellent sever products

Cons: I wish they would incorp. Firewire so I didn't have to waste a PCI slot on their board.

Other Thoughts: Supreo Doctor is your hardware monitoring software. It will not work unless you understand that it needs SMTP loaded on Windows. goto add remove programs select add/remove window components. check all in Management and monitoring tools, in IIS select SMTP services. After install load the Supero Doctor Ver. Client. After that it will let you know what your system is doing and Sandra Pro will also. (it talks like RAID Cards do for info)

5 out of 5 eggsGood overall board

Pros: It runs and is very stable, fast, MB. I bought it for the PCI-X slot 64bit 133Mhz so I can run a hardware Sata II Raid controller. I also own the Intel 955 XBK board and for the reasons below, I prefer the Intel board but the Intel board doesn't have a PCI-X slot. Also, Supermicro tech support answered the phone right away when I had a question and they didn't ask for $ for tech support (like Intel). Overclocks real nice (unlike Intel boards).

Cons: My only real complaint is it doesn't have any cpu temp, fan speed or other sensors for voltage that work in Sandra 2005 utilities but you can see them in the bios on bootup.

Other Thoughts: No utilities software or CD/DVD making software. The chipset drivers, Intel RAID software, and Intel Pro LAN drivers are all dated (old versions), even on Supermicro's web site they have old drivers. I got newer versions of the 955X chipset driver, Intel Pro LAN driver, the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (RAID software) on the Intel web site for the Intel 955X chipset, and loaded those drivers. The Intel web site drivers work great on this board, but of course you need to use the BIOS specific to this board. Must also use only 1.8 V memory.

My system: Intel D950
Thermaltake Big Typhoon cpu cooler
2x Corair 2GB 667 memory value select (4 GB total)
EVGA 6800 GS PCI X16 video
3Ware 9550SX 4LP Raid controller (Raid 1 setup)
2 WD 3200KS hard drives
600W power supply

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME BOARD (working now)

Pros: I'm the one who posted the previous low rating:
EXTREMELY FAST! GREAT IO for HD and video! Great server\workstation board.

Cons: Requires a 2.02 ATX 12v (new 2.02 type) power supply. Requires PCI-e 16x video card. DONT USE A PCI VIDEO CARD. PCI-e slot is RESERVED for VIDEO ONLY! Don't try to add an add-on card to the pci-e 16x slot!

The board drivers wouldn't completely install for XP PRO for USB and NIC. The SM web site had no help. I went to intel.com and found that this chipset REQUIRES XP SP1 or higher to solve the USB problem. I installed SP2 (luckly ordered the free SP2 cd-rom a while back), and then reinstalled the chipset and nic drivers. Everything worked after that!

Other Thoughts: I wasted a few days with odd problems of not booting my SATA, shutdowns, no video, not able to "reboot", etc... TRUST ME
A) Do not use a PCI video card, use the pci-e x16 slot for video ONLY.
B) YOU MUST have an atx12v 8 pin version 2.02 compliant power supply. They suggest 350watt, but with my video card and hard 2 HD's I calculated over 400, so I got a 500 watt Antec NeHeo ATX12V 2.02 PS.

The IO panel for the board to fit in the case (keyboard, nic, etc) is not standard layout, so they send one with the board.

I'm using a dual core celeron 2.x Ghz with 512MB RAM. The cpu was $72 and the ram $60. This config (the cheapest for this board) blows away my highest expectations! I've never witnessed such speed and no hour glasses in Windows XP before!

The online manual and the printed are different. The bios config is simpler than either of them say with less options available.

I have non ECC RAM, but the bios says it is ECC and works fine both with it set as nonecc and ecc.

1 out of 5 eggsREAD THIS 1st (or afterwards AGH!)

Pros: none at the moment :( Can't get the thing running with WIndows XP fully :( have been trying for 3 days. Manual is not for MB, but more of a general for several boards. will check online mamual :(

Cons: REQUIRES pci-x16 video card, don't think about using a PCI video card. Supposedly pci-x cards would work. You will have NOTHING BUT TROUBLE trying to use a standard pci video card. Driver cd is missing USB controller files, so the device isn't fully installed. NO NIC DRIVER!!!!!! The board has an Intel NIC, but not one of the ones on the driver CD, so don't think about connecting to the network any time soon! *** REQUIRES *** ATX 2.02 (yes 2.02) power supply with 8 pin cable!! (use another PS and you wont stay running long!) SATA drives wont boot!!!!!!, start to and then system shuts down. PATA drive works well for booting.

Other Thoughts: I'm using another computer (that works) to write this. MB is HEAVY and solid as a rock! Must weigh 100 pounds ;)
