Solid server board
- Pros: Roomy board, easy to install if you have a proper eATX case, good layout of connectors as well as identification on board of pins and jumpers. Solid once I got it up and running.
- Cons: Driver CD was blank, not bootable, no data whatsoever on it, so make sure you download SATA drivers to a floppy prior to OS install if you need it. Without enabling enhanced SATA, which requires the drivers, only four SATA ports are active (IDE Emulation).
- Other Thoughts: Know what you're getting into: Intel 5000 chipset doesn't appear to support Server 2K8/Vista(Win7), ended up running XP Pro x64. Onboard video is VGA only, highest resolution was 1024x768. Only 5 total USB ports - 2 on I/O panel, two port pin header and single port pin header. No onboard audio, no PCI slots, though it does have PCI-X which works for some, not all, PCI cards, no 1394. Also, instructions could have been clearer about needing case risers to thread the CPU cooler fan screws into, though that's my own fault for not looking at the mounts closer to see they weren't threaded (first time building a Xeon board).
solid mb
- Pros: solid, stable board. no issues whatsoever. supports 32GB of memory. dual redundant 700watt power supplies. SATA (cheap) storage.
- Cons: nothing really, except that the onboard RAID does not work with Linux. Use the software RAID in Linux instead.
- Other Thoughts: Running Fedora 8 w/ Xen, dual Harpertown Xeons @2.0GHz, 16GB memory, 6 1TB drives in RAID1, overall a solid motherboard for a server. the price shows what you pay for.
excellent motherboard
- Pros: I have several of these motherboards, coupled with the supermicro SC-836 3U rackmount 16-bay chassis for storage servers, and I have yet to have an issue (knock on wood). I was impressed by the documentation and the driver CD (especially the makedisk program for drivers).
- Cons: Price. However, with the SC-836 chassis unit, you can build a very cost-effective storage server that is very high quality.
- Other Thoughts: I was pleasantly suprised by the built-in RAID, which is easy to set up in BIOS and has simple options to use. The makedisk program easily made the windows 2k3 drivers for the RAID, and I was up in running in no time with mirrored volumes.
