5 out of 5 eggsFollow Up - Painless RMA

Pros: One morning the computer wouldn't boot up. Isolated the problem to the motherboard. By that evening I had a shipping address and RMA number. I ended up dropping it off since they are local. Exactly 1 week later (Under 5 business days) I had a fixed motherboard at my doorsteps. VERY FAST PHONE PICKUP AND EMAIL RESPONSE.

Cons: The motherboard died after 5 months, but supermicro repaired it in under a week.

Other Thoughts: Tech support was knowledgable. Phone for RMA and Tech would be answered in under 20 seconds. Emails were responded to within 20 minutes.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works. Good board. Tech support extremely helpful.

Cons: No Firewire. Unusually tight fit to the motherboard tray.

Other Thoughts: Upon opening the board electrostatic bag, I noticed that the packet of silica jell was broken and silica jell granules were strewn all over the components and in PCI slots, etc.. I cleaned them off, thinking nothing, but the board ended up DOA. Did an RMA with newegg, I recommend Supermicro though since they do cross shipping.

4 out of 5 eggsA few less than optimal items

Pros: Seems to be rock solid. Rev 2+ handles 51xx (woodcrest) or 53xx (clovertown) CPUs.

Cons: Onboard soundcard is a relic. There is no onboard firewire. Had to reshape the 8 pin power connector due to lack of clearance with nearby capacitors. Board fills an Extended ATX case and requiers that the CPU heat sinks be mounted to the case.

Other Thoughts: This board requires a 500+ watt SSI power supply.

3 out of 5 eggsDon't use with Woodcrest

Pros: This board is setup for workstation applications. It was easy to install, my system has been reliable, and most of my tech support was very sincere.

Cons: This board does not work with woodcrest active cpu cooler fans. The PWC four pin connectors aren't working and even the latest bios are only using line voltage control. Processors running very cool, fans running very high speed. As a result I've nicknamed my machine "the hurricane".

Other Thoughts: Supermicro's support was helpful but ultimately led me to the conclusion that they have a product on the market here that does not work correctly for some "compatible" devices (dual core xeons). If you're going woodcrest try another board, unless you like to make your neighbors listen to your cpu cooler fans.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat workstation board

Pros: Great workstation class motherboard (dual CPU supporting dual core with PCIe x16). Rock solid, and I wouldn't expect anything less from Supermicro. One of the best server/workstation manufacturers out there. Plenty of SATA ports, only one PATA, but I didn't need more anyway. My system screams with all my apps now. Very satisfied.

Cons: I wish it had more front USB ports, but what can you expect from a workstation/server board? My Coolermaster Stacker (also purchased from NewEgg) has support for 6 front USB built right into the case, but I can only use 2. Front USB is increasingly important for connecting many devices and no one wants to reach all the way into the back or purchase a USB hub (which don't always work).

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have a 24 pin ATX connector, a 4 pin 12V connector and an additional 8 pin 12V connector, otherwise this board won't work. Overall, it's a great board.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board

Pros: Installation was sweet. (long, read below, but everything worked). Recognizes all hardware. Thought it didn't come with monitoring stuff, but another reviewer said it does so I will have to take another look at the cd.

Cons: I'm not sure if the board is weird dimensions as in the 13 height is swapped with the 12 width. It didn't fit my case very niceley, the case had an extra inch on one side and too little room on the other. Yes my case was extended atx.

Other Thoughts: Make sure your case supports your processors and board. I had to cut out 2 cd drive bays, my floppy bay, and bolt my heatsyncs to this motherboard to get it to fit into the case. The case I bought wasn't made for this motherboard but it's all working now. Didn't know the heatsyncs had to screw directly into the case.

5 out of 5 eggsSupermicro Supersupport

Pros: Product tech support is #1 - Great! Documentation is excellent. The bundled monitoring software is reassuring - nice to know temps, and fan speeds.

Cons: Wish they had more PCI Express X-16 slots. Their built in audio system could be improved - no biggie. Their website could be improved - it took me much effort to find the right power supply.

Other Thoughts: Most impressed with their tech support people - very knowledgable and easy to work with.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid.

Pros: Specs are all there. Top notch device. Works well with Dempsey Xeons.

Automated thermal adjust for fans.

Excellent Supermicro support.

All hardware recognized by recent linux distros (SLED 10, Ubuntu Dapper, etc)

Cons: I did not notice this at purchase, but there are not 1394 connections or headers onboard.

Other Thoughts: Experience does not include testing with both branches filled (4x pump at 1333MHz bus) or with Woodcrests, or with onboard raid.
