5 out of 5 eggsReturning Cx

Pros: Affordable, reliable, & a great MB for home use.

Cons: I did not experience any problems in the setup or afterwards

Other Thoughts: Know that the support for this is overseas if you don't mind (I sure don't) this is a great product I started withing SM Motherboards a few years back in a corporate environment and have now moved them into my personal life

3 out of 5 eggsinadequate north bridge cooling

Pros: Fast, usually excellent board, amazing capability for form factor. Lots of expansion options.

Cons: See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Twice now I've had one of these boards die, and both times there has been a brown scorch mark under the north bridge. The heat sink is right next to the ram, and fully buffered ram itself is notorious for running extremely hot. I'm RMA'ing the second board now, will switch cooling to a hsf that covers more of the motherboard. Hopefully it will help. So be aware. This board lasted for 5 months before it gave out.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with ESX 3.5 u3

Pros: Wanted this for an ESX project (Not ESXi). Read the specs on compatible Supermicro boards but found the costs too high. After some research, this mb had the same stats as the other ESX compatible mb's.

Bought one, some ram, loaded ESX, used the MAtrix Raid and ESX started no probs! Both Nics worked! This is a great all in one solution for ESX!

Also this MB will run XP, 2003 Server and Vista!

Cons: None, very reliable, bought 2 of them never one single problem. Most reliable MB I have ever used and I have never used Supermicro prior.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Board

Pros: Solid board for a good price. Fits standard ATX in a mid size tower case (Antec 900). Cheap...

Cons: Unable to get everything working under Vista 64. Drivers on disk not compatible with Vista 64. I had to search Supermicro site and email support for drivers. Finally gave up and installed XP 64 and everything works perfect.

Other Thoughts: Very nice board for the money. Could easily build a Mac Pro killer for half the price. Could even load OSX because the mainboard uses the 5000x chipset which is compatible. Check out OSX86.com. Will buy again for a future build.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Easy set-up with 650 watt Thermaltake, 4Gb 5300 Kingston (KVR667D2D4F5K2), dual E5405 Harpertown (BX80574E5405A). Using just a single Seagate (1) Tb drive. By far the fastest machine I have come across.

Cons: Minor startup issues, easily corrected. Probably pilot error.

Other Thoughts: Far more options in the hardware setup than any desktop board I have worked with. Using this for digital image editing.
Fantastic

5 out of 5 eggs1 Year+

Pros: The machine is running like a champ! A note to new buyers, make absolutely sure you get qualified memory for any 5000 board. It will save you a lot of money and frustration. If you spend a few extra on a 5400, you'll do better in the long run. FB-DIMM memory is least expensive at newegg.com and they have the best variaty. I'm a one stop shopper anyway. :) System is fat and happy thanks to me and newegg with Lian-Li, Silverstone 750W, 2x5345, 10GB 667 FB-DIMM, 9800GTX, SB Audigy2 w/Bose Companion 5 USB speakers. Always happy with Supermicro products.

Cons: It has AC97 and not 5.1 like the +O model.

3 out of 5 eggsSame Problem as below

Pros: Good manual, Easy install.

Cons: I have built a server with this motherboard before and everything went fine. Then this week I built an identical system with the same motherboard, and immediately experience the same problem that Tech Rat reported. As soon as I turned on the computer for the first time, it seemed to power up and post normally, though I didn't have a monitor attached to see what the post looked like. I didn't have a chance to either because about 10-15 seconds later, the whole machine just unexpectedly turned off. I tried what I could to get it back on again, but no matter what, nothing would power on even though the bios LED said that the power was connected. I called tech support at Super and after banging it into their head what the problem was, they told me it was probably the power supply. Well I have another computer here with a compatible power supply so I attached that to this motherboard and tried to fire it up, but again nothing happened. So it is definitely not the power supply.

Other Thoughts: cont'd. So, I don't know whats going on, but it almost sounds like it's the bios that caused the shutdown and subsequent power on failure. I am using Xeon 5410 processors. So at this point I am hoping for the same miracle as the review below, and see if it will turn back on after a couple hours. If not, RMA baby!

4 out of 5 eggsWorking now...

Pros: Everything seems to work. The startup beep is annoyingly loud. Really liked the board layout, lots of room for routing wires inside my Antec P182 case and this board and location of pins and connectors are easily accessed.

Cons: Had an issue during initial setup. Installed CPU and memory and power, turned it on to post and check everything and all was good. Put video, SAS controller card along with IDE DVD and SAS Had drive in and reconnected power. MB power was there in the ready state according the the MB status light, but system wouldn't power cycle up from there. Isolated the power up circuit from the case switch and jumped the pins still no powerup. Powered off and on many times, uninstalled everything, tried again, nothing. Then after probably a couple more hours tried again, still nothing but had left the power up switch in the on state and while staring at it perplexed it magically just started working. Since then it powers up according to the switch every time...very wierd.

Other Thoughts: I would probably but it again now that it is working. Still wondering what caused the startup issue....
