5 out of 5 eggsMight want to ignore Mountaineer

Pros: Alll that I listed before

Cons: All that I listed before except now the PCI-E speed with my areca raid controller is mostly fixed with a new BIOS from SM

Other Thoughts: I think I know Mountaineer's problem. He probably has some of the screw hole things in his case in area that the mobo does not have screw holes. I had this problem when I first got my board and it would not detect all my memory (sometimes only half or less) and the machine would turn on and be impossible to turn off. The problem he describes seems very similar to what I had when one of the screw holes was shorting the memory slots and possibly more.

After I made sure the case holes were correct I had no problems with anything.

1 out of 5 eggs1 good, 2 bad

Pros: many many gen-2 x8 PCIE slots
built-in IPMI
runs Westmere or Gainstown CPUs
Onboard Video

Cons: 2 out of 3 boards didn't work right

Other Thoughts: I have been using one of these for 6 weeks as a test bench, and I love it - no problems at all. Then I went through 2 more, neither of which would power-up/down correctly.

On the 2 bad ones- as soon as I plug in the power supply, the fans come on, all 3 power rails on the pcie bus light up, but it won't boot. The power button was unresponsive. I was able to use the IPMI to power up, update the bios, update the ipmi FW, install Linux, but I could never solve the power cycling problem. IPMI says it powers off, but the fans are on and the bus voltages are up. I tried single/dual cpus, Westmere and Gainstown CPUs, different memory configurations, 2 versions of the BIOS, 2 versions of the IPMI FW, 3 different power switches, and 4-5 different power supplies. If there's another solution I don't have any more time to find it.

RMA'd and ordered an X8DTi-F instead - I have 4 of those and never had a problem with them.

5 out of 5 eggsOnly one problem so far

Pros: Supports dual processors
12 DIMM slots
IPMI
Not E-EATX
Lots of PCI-E slots all x8 lane

Cons: Kind of expensive
PCI-E speed issues with my raid controller
My ram won't run at PC-1333
No PCI-E x16 slots

Other Thoughts: I bought this board instead of the supermicro board that has 18 DIMM slots due to the fact that this one is regular EATX and not E-EATX like super micro's 18 DIMM boards. So far the board has worked great and IPMI is a nice extra but not really needed in my situation. This board cost $30 more than the board that has 18 DIMM slots and had x16 PCI-E slots but they wouldn't fit my case.

I only have two issues. One is my 24 GB of supertalent ram I have in it (6x4GB) will only run at PC-1067 event hough it should be capable of 1333. This is not a major issue for me.

My other issue is my ARC-1280ML (Raid Cont.) will randomly run at x8 (like its supposed to) x4 or x1 which is quite annoying. Running at x4 isn't hurting it that bad but is when x1. The ARC-1280ML didn't have this problem in the two other boards I have used it in. My video card also doesn't seem to do this. I am hoping a bios update will fix the issue but I am not holding my breath.

All in all its a good board.
