1 out of 5 eggsanother bad board

Pros: low cost

Cons: It was only able to detect 1 dimm for cpu0's dimm slots. I didn't feel like returning the board so thought I would move both the cpu and all 3 dimms to cpu1. The board would not even post.

Other Thoughts: I needed a cheap/cost effective backup server for my operation. My only requirement is it must be able to handle more than 32 GB of ram. This is the cheapest board I can find and I am sorry that I had it. Ended up with a different SuperMicro board. It was more expensive but worked right out of the box.

2 out of 5 eggsGood, when it works

Pros: Cheap, dual socket, lots of PCIE, PCI slots

Cons: First board was stable 2 months, then would randomly crash ESXI. RMA'd to Supermicro and they confirmed it was bad, but out of their initial replacement warranty. They finally overnighted one on our UPS account after two weeks of "Testing".

Second board randomly powers down with 2 CPU's installed with two different power supplies. Tech support said to update bios, still shuts down. Supermicro tech support is not being as help this time. Hopefully the third time is a charm...

Other Thoughts: Should have bought an Intel board. This one has caused way too much headache. There are many other dual socket 1366 boards out there.

1 out of 5 eggssomething is wrong with this board

Pros: price is good, ATX, supermicro's tech support

Cons: too many problems, in win 2003 cpu errors in event viewer if you have 2 CPU's in there. if you enable RAID it wont boot from some CD's , such as memtest. if you update the bios to the beta version it fix all the problems but locks up at NVRAM check because the chip set is too hot. solution is to put a Fan on the chipset and block all the pci-E slots. well I don't call that a solution though
already built 7 or 8 servers and all the same

Other Thoughts: maybe switch to a Tyan

1 out of 5 eggsBad design

Pros: Cost, dual Nehalem CPU support, ATX form factor, Supermicro tech support (every time I called, I was on the phone with a real life person within a minute, not only that, they dont spend 20 minutes with ret@rded, useless questions like your name, number, email, address; they get right to the point. I like that)

Newegg customer service

Cons: 1st one was defective. When both CPU's where installed, it wouldn't post. SuperMicro support said it's bad and to RMA it. Got the second and and it worked for a couple days, then socket #1 went dead. SM said to update the bios which I did and it didin't help. RMA'd

The northbridge chipset heatsink is useless as it would get up to 130-150 degrees idle (checked with a temp-gun). It does not do a good job at keeping the chipset cool and you can't put a fan on it because it would impede the ability to install any PCIx cards

RAM slots are up against the the CPU heatsink when they are installed, and if you turn the heatsinks 90 degrees so the fans would push air parallel to the RAM, they would be blowing hot air on eachother (BXSTS100A heatsinks).

It's an ATX form factor, but the location of some of the screw holes on this board are covered by the RAM slots and other things. You only get about 2/3 of the screw holes available.

No IMPI LAN!! :(

Other Thoughts: I bought this board to run ESXi. ESXi installed just fine on this board, but without reliable dual CPU support, I am returning this board and going with an Extended-ATX SuperMicro board. Spending a little more money, but I think it'll be worth it and hopefully it'll work this time.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent

Pros: Rock solid performance, stable, slots are conveniently placed for dual Corsair H50 cooling systems and superb customer support. Every time I called for help somebody is on line in less than a minute!!!
I was strong fan of Asus for 10 years and they are not the same any more. Quality went down and terrible customer support.
I built a work station with dual Xeon 5506 processors and Supermicro Kublai chasis. I do lot of HD video rendering and these processors are pretty fast. I am very satisfied. My first board had a short and New egg replaced it right away with always pleasant customer service rep.

Cons: Does not work with Ubuntu 8 or 9 versions.

Other Thoughts: I will not try any other mother board

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine with UDIMM ECC 6x2GB RAM

Pros: Works fine with UDIMM ECC 6x2GB RAM. PCI-E 2.0 x8 (1 in x16 slot) allows to use regular video card PCI-E x16 and it is totally sufficient for fast 2D output (1600x1200 80fps).

Cons: none (for my needs) however it is very ascetic server board very effective CPU based computational platform however it is quite limited for hard disks and GPU demanding applications.

Other Thoughts: Perfect for multi-threaded computationally extensive applications (CPU based); in my case it is used as ray-tracing machine.
